"The fact that this question has been asked so many times makes me think that it is some sort of a taboo to portray American children without a smile."

i don't think it was creepy. i didn't notice it, some of them were funny. oh well, i don't have any kids and i don't know what they've got to smile about, so maybe i think it's normal that they're not smiling.

The only thing creepy here is the photographer who asked pre-teen girls to dress in a bikini or skimpy gymnastics costume.

That photographer is a perv

Matching looks and clothes isn't creepy.

I think it instills self pride, and helps promote better self confidence.

I remember my daughter pleading for one of these awful things a few years back. It seemed that they were not only terribly creepy but some sort of status symbol for some of her more vapid classmates. Article seems to back me up.

I'm not a believer that anything other than smiling is taboo, but those are some of the unhappiest looking children I've ever seen. A couple of them look drugged. They all have that vacant thousand yard stare shared by many victims of abuse. I wonder what's really going on here.

2013-01-29 10:43:06 AM
They just finished production on the next film installment for these.

"Hi! I was just wondering if you'd mind if I took a picture of your preteen daughter and her doll. In bikinis. No, no, no, it's OK - I'm a journalist! I work for this magazine. What? Well, yes, the pictures will be on the internet where anyone can look at them. Is that a problem? No? Super! All right, now just get her to lounge on the bench here..."

Little girls have had dolls for centuries, these are just well made ones. The photographer is a bit creepy in that he runs around photographing little girls - unsmiling - with their dolls.

I guess his next "muse" will be little boys dressed as soldiers, cops, killers, etc - all fondling toy guns and staring dead eyed into the camera.

Another coffee table book reason to hate Americans. Hooray.

I often think of a past Fark linked photo essay on childrens bedrooms around the world. Most of them obviously didn't know what a box spring and mattress even was as they slept on makeshift whatever or the floor with others of the family. Those pictures humbled me for life.

You think that people who don't know what a box spring are are going to buy a coffee table book??

As i recall, several of the American bedrooms were pretty harsh. The Asian ones were over the top.

She might not conform to your idea of beauty, but she's not ugly. She could very easily be stunning looking in a few years time.

They were actually better made 20+ years ago when they only had the historical dolls line.

Come to think of it, it's been about that long since I got mine. Granted, l liked her and all her neat little accessories, but I really didn't know how to play with her. I would sort of pose her in her different outfits and play sets and just sort of... look at her. She was too large to play with like how I played with my Barbies, so I just sort of had her, like a pet rock or something. I'm one of those weird kids who actually liked reading the books more and learning about American history rather than futzing around with an artificial infant surrogate (still don't have much of that mothering instinct to this day).

The American Girl dolls aren't really "artificial infant surrogates", more like little sisters, buddies or "mini me's". That's why the company sells outfits that match both the girls and the doll.

I still think it's no big deal - girls have dolls. The photog on the otherhand is full of creepy. She loves to take normal things, and frame them in uncomfortable ways just to get a reaction. "Oh, someone's happy with something? Let me add my special creepy sauce and I'll destroy their childhood memories!"

That was a Time magazine essay, yeah, and they did another famous one of the weekly food shopping bought by families around the world. Fantastic.
