Wait, wouldn't it be the 'Darth Vader of 2013'? I mean it is a white man with a black man's voice

The Jamaican thing seems to be in with advertisers right now. I just saw one of those Cinnamon Jacks commercials with its dreadlocked mascot CinnaMon.

Why is it that everything, except true racism, is called racist these days?

For me, I would wear it as a badge of honor as it imparts the knowledge that one ISN'T a racist.

It's not racist, it's just really really annoying.

2013-01-29 11:23:07 AM
How is that racist? Wait...are people assuming that everyone from Jamaica is black? There's racism happening alright, but it's not coming from the commercial.

2013-01-29 11:23:25 AM
VW is just trying to cash in off the recent Colorado and Washington laws passed.

A Bob Marley song would have made the ad way better. Not that I am biased in any way.

Still liked it.

It still throws me for a loop when I see travel shows with non-blacks living in Jamaica and speaking with a Jamaican accent. Likewise with the whites in Hawaii trying to talk with a Polynesian inflection.

/someone tell me it's okay, really

Okay, sure. But what was negative about the use of the Jamaican accent in this commercial?  It seemed overall positive, and in no way seemed to be saying anything at all negative about Jamaicans.  Rosie O'Donnell's "ching chong" comment was a slightly disparaging as it seemed to mock the language, but even then, as much as I cannot stand Rosie O'Donnell, that flap was way overblown.

Not even a little racist because it's not about Jamaicans, it's about channelling Jamaica's famous "no worries" vibe, which has always been VW's marketing soul.

Eh, fair enough I guess.  Rosie could have gotten away with that joke if she was Chinese just like a Jamaican person could get away with Jamaican jokes.  If you venture into "positive stereotypes" territory for jokes, it gets a little hairy but not as bad as what Rosie did.

So sounding like someone from another country is racist? Last I checked, that's how Jamaicans sound - and not all Jamaicans have the same skin color.

If they're accusing of something, it's closer to being ethnocentristic, but in a positive way towards the Jamaican cheery attitude (which their tourist board promotes in American commercials to visit the country).

Imitation alone isn't enough to be racist unless there is some form of negativity involved.

You wouldn't call a cross dresser inherently sexist, would you?

I always measure humor by how it tips the pejorative vs observational scale.

I see them affecting an existing accent-observational

They use said accent in conjunction with localized slang and phrases- potentially observational
said phrases are not an invented dialect meant to demean a group of people. Like the aforementioned "Ching Chong" dribble for Asians (LesserEvil's post),
or the "yes Massa" slang for Uncle Tom era bigotry, therefore- observational

The use of the dialect and accent are a means to engender a positive attitude amongst fellow coworkers- observational.

So far nothing strikes me as strictly pejorative. There is nothing said that is demeaning to the Rasta culture, or inferring them to be lesser.

My next step is to swing the humorous device in the opposite direction to try and gain some perspective.

I imagine a black Jamaican man affecting an American or British accent. This man is interacting with coworkers in his place of employ. The visual I receive is still pretty corporate, but maybe with hotter temperatures and more ocean view. I can deduce from this that I personally associate Rasta culture with tropical life, nothing seriously offensive here (which is a relief as it is self reflection). I also imagine the coworkers reacting much like the ones in the video; bewildered, but otherwise accepting. I am an American white man, and this imagined scenario doesn't spark any offense.

I am trying to stay away from some scenario of false-equivalency (the 'if they can do it, then i can do it' argument) by trying to examine both side. Upon reflection, I do not find the commercial offensive. It is not my taste of humor, but that is due to my upbringing; I am from New York City, so people of many races speaking in many different accents is not very jarring to me. From a practical standpoint, I doubt it will air as perceived racism is still a PR mess.
