If the Bulgarian influx is anything like the Polish influx, I'm all for it.

The Polish labour has been excellent. Every Polish workman I've hired has been on time, worked damn hard, and been pretty cheap.

Polish are the new Irish.

And Romanians are all romantic vampires and horse drawn wooden gypsy wagons, right? That sounds lovely!

That can happen in the UK because very few people in the UK would have any idea at all about the history of the word "boy", and it's used as a normal regular non-racist term of belittlement, and they would be horrified to find themselves in that situation.

"Paki" has no usage whatsoever outside of racist one.

The Europe Union has the free movement of people between its nations as one of its founding planks. It would be illegal to install immigration caps on EU citizens.

Using oriental to refer to a specific person in the UK, as opposed to an art period or some such, would get you some very odd looks in the UK too. It's not hands-down "WTF" but definitely a "Are you a 120 year old grandmother?" sort of thing.

The UK isn't going to leave the EU, it's just Tory sabre rattling because they're losing a massive chunk of their supporters to the anti-EU UKIP party.

They have to sound angry and like they're doing something... so they're proposing a referendum in 2019 that will never actually happen, and they won't be in charge anyway.

I don't believe it inherently is. It is just that since that shorthand has been picked up by extrmists and racist it has 'become' racist.

History and context. The BNP and their buddies on the far right adopted it as a slur to use on anyone with ancestry from around the Indian sub-continent. To hammer home their intent to use it as a slur they may have occasionally used hammers.

That's because it isn't. The n-word originated from a totally non-offense for black, so I'm not sure how distant etymology really helps here.

Oriental has perfectly normal usages, like food or styles of art and architecture.

Those noodles are not suggesting that they actually taste of Chinese people. It's offensive (or at least profoundly archaic) when used against an actual person.

Distant? How long has Paki been around?

You were trying to excuse not knowing about the baggage with "boy" but pretend everyone is goign to know it about "Paki.

It is pretty easy to think Paki is no more offensive than Brit, and minus the baggage it would be.

All I said was that Paki is extremely offensive in the UK. I didn't say that the entire world should be aware of it. I was just pointing out that in a thread about the UK, it would probably be wise not to use it.

re paki.
Indians and Pakistanis came to the UK. They both got referred to as Pakis, this upset the indians. It migrated to a term of abuse that both peoples got upset about. In Australia the Pakistani cricket team is referred to as the pakis with nobody blushing.
