Well, certainly not this.  I've been hearing about this kid for a while, but they are keeping the wraps on exactly how his test works.  Does it work as well as he claims?  Is there a possibility for false positives?

Great job, 3 cents a test and 5 mins to run. I wonder which pharmaceutical company will buy him out and make it disappear....yeah i'm probably too cynical

Everything has false positives. You always want second opinions. If the rate is low, a few people being scared for a little while is well worth saving many more lives.

/just speaking theoretically here, don't know the stats on this particular test

It's not too crazy. He has a dipstick mesothelin indicator for pancreatic cancer and the other diseases are just hypotheticals.

That was my thought too. Though it sounds like this kid doesn't plan to sell to a pharma co. I read articles
like this and I think about my 18 year old - who's so damn smart it's freaky scary but won't even motivate
himself to take a freaking shower or do the bare minimum in school and I want to cry.

Sorry, I meant a high enough rate to render the test worthless.  I mean, it's testing for a marker in the blood, but does that marker show up for reasons other than pancreatic cancer?

News: Major advance in the war on cancer will make very early detection VERY cheap and VERY fast. Fark: Scientist responsible is 15 years old. Still no cure ... hey give him a chance he won't be 15 forever Aug 21 2012

15 year old wins prize for inventing cheap urine test that identifies early stage pancreatic cancer with 90% accuracy May 21 2012

This artice is far more detailed.

Lsherm: I mean, it's testing for a marker in the blood, but does that marker show up for reasons other than pancreatic cancer?

That's what a hypothetical second test would be for. I had a benign tumor, first suspected by a doctor due to physical symptoms, first test was a blood test because it's cheap and will eliminate most negatives, the second confirmation was an MRI.

2013-01-28 08:38:14 PM
I was also taking credit for my dad's research at 15.

Nothing like being repetitively redundant.

I wonder if the kid will be getting a big fat payday for his creation? Hopefully he'll get royalties or something. If his test is as revolutionary as it sounds, he certainly deserves to be rich.

I think it might unfortunately boil down to biotech patent law as he actually hasn't innovated a new tech as much as combining preexisting methods. Which would totally suck for him of course but might spur a future great mind.
