truthseeker2083: Shazam999: Pocket Ninja: I know lots of people who use Google Hangouts for free business teleconferencing, but I don't know a soul who uses Google+ as a social site.

This. The Hangouts is the only semi-useful feature and the only reason I have an account there.

This, plus the fact that it's now required for posting reviews in the play store. If you require it for that, of course the numbers will go up.

This, and unless you jump through the hoops just right, you end up with an account on G+ by default, even if you're only signing up for Gmail.

So in other words, they're tricking/forcing people who have no intention of using G+ into making G+ accounts, meaning the number of users is a meaningless statistic. Whereas generally if you sign up for facebook, you're signing up for, you know, facebook.

So, sort of like the inverse of when Facebook decided everyone who had a FB account also had a brand new email address. It then could use those numbers to show how many people were using its email service?

I think people forget what it takes to get dialed in to a social network, Facebook has been around long enough that it was the go to social network, Myspace has been effectively dead for quite a long time and the others were never really contenders. You don't just join a social network and boom you have interesting interactions and people you mesh with, no more than you can walk into a room and have instant friends. I got into beta with the Something Awful Goons to prime the pool. Yeah the Goonstream is still the bulk of my stream but I have picked up others along the way. G+ is way more interesting, engaging and entertaining for me, I still do FB, that is where most of my real life friends remain for one reason or another but the bulk of my time is on G+...

G+ is for people who want to get themselves "out there" and appear to be all hooked up and networked and blah blah blah.

No way, that's Facebook where your friends all see each other and everything defaults to world readable. G+ actually tries to achieve some form of privacy, and the whole point of circles is to give users the ability to compartmentalize what they share. Suddenly I can actually have one account where I talk about the things said in a drunken stupor at the D&D game last week, and stay up to date on the latest happenings from my company's HR manager, without worries about getting fired.

snowshovel: Aboleth: Kanemano: Mike Chewbacca: Aboleth: My Google+ feed is a fountain of artist/photography/movie/comics/tabletop RPG activity.

And no Facebook-type derp.

My mom is on FB though, and she's on there because all her kids and siblings on there. That being said, the stupid ads and suggested links and suggested likes are really, really annoying on FB, and every day I inch closer to quitting and going to G+ full time.

that's the thing it's not me switching over, it's all the cousins and aunt's and uncles that will have to switch for me to go to G+, I can't be farked to post photo's of my vacation twice.

At this point I don't have to anymore. The facebook group has all the family and old friends who once in a while need to communicate with, share photos. Nothing that I'm nuts about but it's good to stay in touch with them via FB.

G+ is where I go to read and post about tech, books, art, comics, RPGs, etc. Great discussions there. Family and old school buddies who only talk about sports can stay away.

Yeah, this is my experience, too. Facebook is where I get to see pictures of pets and babies, but google plus has become the haven of my geeky hobbies without all of the baby pictures and daily affirmations of god photos.

Now, I'm sure that google would MUCH rather have everyone's mom posting grandkid pictures, but as a user, I can't complain.

Now I'm wondering if any of you are in actually in my circles now.

In other news, 25% of Internet users occasionally accidentally click the demure "+1" next to Google Search links and therefore are users of Google+.

Well, iirc the new version of google docs (drive) and video chat are all bundled under the G+ project umbrella. If you shove enough of your pre-existing services into it, it's bound to get some market-share eventually.

People actually using it to post statuses and stuff is still basically not happening, though.

Social networking should be open source, distributed, etc. People should not be handing over control of their personal data to huge corporations.

There are already applications and protocols that have been developed. Tent, diaspora, etc. There is no reason for centralized control of social networking.

Wasn't there a thread above this one about how the modern office environment rewards narcissists and psychopaths? Substitute "social networking sites" for "modern office environment" and you'll see the reason why I have no interest in Facebook or Google+ or Myspace or any of that junk.

Lord Dimwit: Google really needs to buy Twitter and then not fark it up. Seriously.

Also, what's up with the plethora of huge "China-only" social sites?

The Great Firewall of China is what is up with all the China only sites. Enormous chunks of the internet are blocked off in China as stupid censorship attempts. The government mandates all kinds of controls so they can squash anybody talking about anything forbidden including Democracy or pretty much any religion. They even block Wikipedia because you can look up information about said topics on it.

So you end up with a bunch of Chinese only sites because the normal versions of said sites are blocked and normal citizens caught using them by bypassing the firewall can be arrested, fined, and even possibly killed. And by killed I mean they suddenly have a terribly unfortunate accident or commit suicide by stabbing themselves in the back repeatedly or jumping off a rooftop with a locked door they don't have a key to.

I think that Google is on the right path and I would bet on them over Facebook for the future. The key is the operating system. Facebook is a social networking "website." Google is using Android to turn peoples' phones into social networking "hardware" where everything is connected, from your youtube videos to your contacts becoming your friends list, to your search function etc.

Google's strategy will be to continually look at which apps have social networking functions on Android and buy them.

Keep in mind, this is where I see it going, not where I particularly want it to go.

How many of the Google+ accounts are due to the fact that if you want auto image upload on the S3 you have to have a Google+ account. I know that's the only reason I have one. I'm sure there is an app to do it but I like doing as much as possible from the phone without resorting to apps.

Already more useful to me than Facebook. Plus there's Linkedin for the social stuff that isn't navel gazing (which is what Twitter is for).

I'm surprised at MySpace's position, ahead of Pinterest. I sure see a hell of a lot out of Pinterest users.

No it's not. Twitter is what you put into it. If you follow people with a penchant for navel-gazing, that's what you'll get. Or you could follow informative and interesting tweets, like Commander Hadfield's from the ISS.

You can post a video blog on YouTube. You can't do that on Fark. "Social Networking Site" is really just another way of saying "Blog without the grammar skills required to write a coherent sentence or paragraph."
