Google+ has been #2 for a while.

I know lots of people who use Google Hangouts for free business teleconferencing, but I don't know a soul who uses Google+ as a social site.

This. The Hangouts is the only semi-useful feature and the only reason I have an account there.

I don't use it as a social site but I do use it for the circles (contacts in gmail), hangouts, auto-photo-upload from my Android phone and stalking Wil Wheaton.

I suppose the later would count as using it as a social site.

This, plus the fact that it's now required for posting reviews in the play store. If you require it for that, of course the numbers will go up.

Since Google now automatically creates a Google+ account when you create a gmail account, I'm not surprised at the numbers.

Not too much of a pain to kill G+ and keep gmail, though.

How is Youtube a social networking site? Because you can make comments? So where is Fark, 4Chan, and Reddit on this list then?

I don't recall the word "abject" being used.

The last post from any of my friends is dated 12/2011 and asks "So....is google + still a thing?"

My Google+ feed is a fountain of artist/photography/movie/comics/tabletop RPG activity.

And no Facebook-type derp.

What defines an "active user" of Google+?  It's pretty much impossible to have an account on any google service without having it be a Google+ account as well.  (You can do it, but they'll nag you about it until you give in just to shut them up).
Then, what do you need to do... search for something?  Post something to a mailing list you're on through google groups?  Send an email?  click on the little red notification thingy just to hide the notifications you don't care about?

2013-01-28 06:22:43 PM
Keep at it tumblr; you're only 5 spaces behind MySpace. With a lot of bootstraps, you might earn the ability to call yourself a failure.

2013-01-28 06:22:46 PM
Between Google Search, Gmail, and Google Voice, I've got enough eggs in that basket. No thanks.

2013-01-28 06:25:37 PM
Google really needs to buy Twitter and then not fark it up. Seriously.

Also, what's up with the plethora of huge "China-only" social sites?

Academic types I know (at least in science, math, and comp-sci) favor google+. But then again they are interested in long lasting conversations (rather than posts on what they had for dinner etc) and little drive by off topic comments.

I don't know if I believe that Tumblr is lower than MySpace. Tumblr is mostly scantily-clad teenagers and naked twenty-somethings, so I'd think it would be way more popular.

My mom is on FB though, and she's on there because all her kids and siblings on there. That being said, the stupid ads and suggested links and suggested likes are really, really annoying on FB, and every day I inch closer to quitting and going to G+ full time.

Facebook is now under pressure to get their P/E down to 30:1 instead of 300:1, so now they're going to get obnoxious about the advertising. Google+ has no pressure to make itself worth a hundred billion dollars, but to just make the mothership a profit.

Google+ only lacks the number of active users, but the most regular social networking users are going to wander over there the minute FB resorts to obnoxious screen blocking pop-up ads. I wonder if we're going to see that the realization of dominance results in fear.

And I bet Google makes more from allowing embedding YouTube clips in Facebook posts than Facebook makes in advertising.

The things people say to justify the fact that they still use Failbook. Is it Stockholm Syndrome or something?

Seriously, Google+ gets bashed a ton, but Facebook gets a free pass? It's to be expected from the tech-illiterate crowd who fear advertisements that might actually interest them, yet ironically trust Facebook with anything personal, but I thought farkers typically had the savy to know a technically superior service when they see it (that's why we're on fark and not reddit, right? ;)

Yeah, I get it, it's one of those "someone has to go first" problems. As the article points out, someone already has. A lot.

/my bias is showing

It's mostly because they've snuck standard features of Google into Plus. Reviews on Google Maps are now on Google Plus. You already have a Google account so it's really just one click and you're in. Also they started that thing where your face is next to your blog in search results. Your face gets more clicks so people started signing up.

It's more like people who have a google account and clicked Yes at some point. It's like saying Google Buzz was the biggest social network because they activated it by default for Gmail users.

//also "None of the Above" is at the coveted #4 making this chart and my post stupid

The reason there are so many users is because you have to manually opt out of it if you have gmail or a youtube account and don't want to use Google+

Really? I have a gmail account, and just now had to go through a rather lengthy multi-page signup process. Still have no idea what it is or does.

Most regions that aren't native english-speaking have their own versions of popular social media. Orkut (now owned by Google) was far more popular than Facebook in India. It's easy to think of services like Facebook and Youtube to be global because of the sheer dominance of western culture but I expect that India and China will both eventually have their own versions of such services that cater to their population's needs and desires.

At this point I don't have to anymore. The facebook group has all the family and old friends who once in a while need to communicate with, share photos. Nothing that I'm nuts about but it's good to stay in touch with them via FB.

G+ is where I go to read and post about tech, books, art, comics, RPGs, etc. Great discussions there. Family and old school buddies who only talk about sports can stay away.

Social networking is the devil.

Facebook if for trolling the anti-intellectuals when 140 characters just will not do the trick. Google + is for having rational conversations with like minded academics, especially when trolling Facebook and Fark becomes a storm of insults that aren't even worth reading, much less replying to....so yeah I use Google + at least once a day, especially in the fall when elections are happening.

Yeah, this is my experience, too. Facebook is where I get to see pictures of pets and babies, but google plus has become the haven of my geeky hobbies without all of the baby pictures and daily affirmations of god photos.

Now, I'm sure that google would MUCH rather have everyone's mom posting grandkid pictures, but as a user, I can't complain.

2013-01-28 09:20:43 PM
I'd post to my G+ account far more often if Google would release the APIs to allow Twitter cross-posts. I use Twitter more than FB for on-the-fly stuff, and the cross-posting keeps both going. The populations are different, I'd be serving three different audiences between Twitter, FB and G+. But, nope, Google wants a walled garden.
