And I would have said "trailer park greasiness".

So desperate was Prince Willem-Alexander to marry Britney Spears, that he vowed to renounce his title in order to fill the comically oversized sneaker slippers left vacant by Jason Alexander and Kevin Federline.

Wat. So he can't be King. But from the NYT link:

The prince let it be known that he would rather abandon the throne and have a wedding in Buenos Aires than lose his bride.

Ok, so this was an offer.

Princess Maxima has always been one of my favorite royals. I like watching the various royal families because I'm a big fan of their jewelry- and Maxima's one of the few magpie princesses left. She trots out the diamonds whenever and wherever she can.

Now that she's going  to be Queen, she'll probably wear the giant Stuart tiara which hasn't been seen in the Netherlands in a long time- Beatrix never wore it.

Yes, I know- my hobby is lame. As far as I'm concerned, if you watch football you've got no room to talk.

Eh, I'm a straight male who likes watching some of the British Royal family goings-on. I enjoyed watching some of the Diamond Jubilee stuff last year, especially that big boat parade. I wish I could have been there to see that. Seemed like a helluva party to be around, despite the fact it was raining. I must admit I also watched a bit of the wedding stuff.

I just find the pageantry and all of the traditions really fascinating- there are so many arcane protocol details in any events of state involving royalty and I find them all really interesting. Plus, I've found that familiarity with all the various royal family histories creates a pretty good framework for remembering historical dates and time periods.

The wedding stuff was a blast. We had a good thread here about it.

Yup- All of the carriages involved in the Royal Wedding were used for other historically significant occasions as well. Trooping the Colour is another event that's always really fun to watch.

Did you know someone fired at the Queen once at Trooping the Colur, back when she was younger and still riding side saddle in the procession? The gun was loaded with blanks, but she wasn't even ruffled- just controlled her horse, kept it from going nuts and let her guards take care of business.

faeriefay: Genevieve Marie: Princess Maxima has always been one of my favorite royals.

I think it's an awesome hobby

There's a blog you might enjoy then- The Royal Order of Sartorial Splendor. They do regular posts about jewelry owned by the various royal families, including spotlighting one tiara a week.

This is what is wrong with America.

What is your analysis of the Kardashians?

I don't know anything about them, as they don't have a collection of historic jewelry that's fun to trace through the generations.

Would you like to trace my family jewels?

No, I think not, but thank you for the offer.

Somehow I doubt they'd be large or significant enough to be of any interest.

They'd interest you if you placed them in your jewelry box.

See, now it's gone from slightly rude but mildly funny double entendre to crass and boring.

I'm glad I didn't go with my initial idea of suggesting you play with my family jewels.

Not music and movies. I'm not a pirate. But dutch people seem to own usenet.

Oh god, Queen Mary, bless her soul. They don't make 'em like her any more.

She's actually responsible for the fact that the British royal family's jewel collection is as extensive and flawless as it is- she had a real eye for it, and had quite a few pieces reworked.

Now... I love Queen Elizabeth II. But the tiaras she's had re-worked? Are... not successful. I wouldn't say I HATE any tiara, but the Burmese Ruby Tiara looks to me like something you give a beauty pageant contestant from West Virginia.

As rubies are my birthstone and I hate to see them abused, I agree.

Now, wasn't it Queen Mary who did her best at buying what she could of was left of the Romanov jewels? Horrible story on many levels, but I seem to recall something about her putting feelers out all over Europe and rescuing what she could, international scorn nothwithstanding.  I don't think it was Alexandra; she wasn't that enterprising.

Yup that was her, god bless her. That plus the Greville inheritance, which was left to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother were big sources of sparkly goodness.

Genevieve Marie: topcon: It's pretty interesting to read about some of the stuff that's been around for decades...regarding the Brits, at least. They make a point of saying stuff like "This is the carriage such and such used back in 1895," and so forth...a lot of those cars, boats, and carriages have their own wikipedia entries.

Jesus Christ, it wasn't *that* long ago. And she wasn't young. I remember it. She was great, immediately got her mount under control and carried on. I grew up on horseback. I tried to explain the coolness of this incident to my nonriding friends, who thought it odd that I was raving about the British monarch.

CSB time...

Went to various places around the world and in Europe for my job... The Netherlands is one place I won't forget.

1. Beautiful skies and weather was tolerable
2. Intelligent population
3. Friendly people who overall were in good shape and lived a healthy lifestyle
4. Insanely good public transportation, bike paths, and sidewalks everywhere.
5. All electricity (that I saw) was buried underground
6. Much faster internet speeds than we get here in the U.S.
7. Pretty much everyone spoke English, and if they didn't, the locals got angry at them as (I believe) it is a required subject for them in grade school.

The only con I'd say was that the native language and signage is very hard to pick up for an English speaker.

That being said, if for whatever reason another WWII occurs... I'll be one of the first signing up to go save the Netherlands.
