I love Blazing Saddles - does that mean I'm some kind of super racist or something?

If you asked some of your single friends what they're looking for in a potential mate, you'd probably elicit a bunch of bashful smiles and receive scores of different answers. You might hear, for example, "tall," "wealthy," "nice," "good-looking," "intelligent," "a similar personality," "compatible likes," "ambitious," or even the occasional (and shameless) "dynamite-in-the-sack," but there's one item that's almost sure to appear near the top of everyone's wish list: "a good sense of humor."

Actually, when someone asks me what I want in a mate, all I say is, "Big titties. Puts out."

People tell me "Yeah, that's real funny" all the time. It just sort of comes naturally to me I suppose.

Oh, so laughing explains why the Joker is loved by everyone he meets. I was wondering about that.

That's not the "laughing at you" kind of laugh, that's the "you're so damn special, everything you do makes me laugh" kind of laugh.

I've been watching you eat a salad for half an hour and smiling at you--do you really think I'm laughing AT you? You think you have lettuce between your teeth, that you chew with your mouth full and I'm laughing at it? No, you're adorable!!

/offer void six months into relationship
//and maybe you mis-read it, and she really IS laughing at you--because you're such a special friend that she knows she can laugh at you and you won't get mad. Your call.

Blazing Saddles isnt racist. Its the reverse. Its one black guy outsmarting hundreds of white cowboys and townies alike.

As evidence for laughter's social function, it has been gauged to be thirty times less frequent in solitary situations compared to social ones. This, you probably already realize. It's why comedies are far more enjoyable to watch with a group than by yourself

so... I guess that's why there are laugh tracks.
/ the funniest shows of all time never had laugh tracks.

Lumping racism in with everything else goofy in that movie essentially was telling the viewer that racism, on its face, was also absurd and foolish. You could be free to laugh at it because of how its practitioners in the movie were lampooned. Knowing some of the background of the movie helps, too. Richard Pryor wrote some of the dialogue (including all of Mongo's lines) and would object during writing meetings about certain material he felt was off limits even in a comedy with racism playing a key role. It had to be done in a way that took the racial tension of the times and relieved the tension. And that's where a lot of laughter comes from: the breaking of tension. It's like that old joke: "What do you call a black guy that flies a plane? A pilot, what else?" People who laugh at that joke are usually doing so at their own initial reactions and tension about race and then suddenly being freed from that situation.

So much this. I used to like Seinfeld, though, but I think that's because the situations were generally funny, it wasn't necessarily the one-liners in the dialogue. But shows like "The Big Bang Theory" are intolerable to me because the one-line quips that require a laugh track every 10 seconds are SO bad it hurts.

When women say they want a partner with "a good sense of humor," it means "he makes me laugh."

When men say they want a partner with "a good sense of humor," it means "she laughs at my jokes. (And has large titties and puts out.)"

Try watching a live-action Disney series. A reaction (laughter or "OOOH" or whatever) after EVERY FARKING LINE.
Fun fact: Seinfeld had a live audience for rehearsals, but then used the recording of that audience for the final taping.

"A woman doesn't think I want this man to like me so I'm going to laugh a lot," Provine told Science Focus. "It just happens."

How do you recondition an old whore?

Shove a ten-pound ham up her coont and pull out the bone.

I've known this joke for 20 years, and I still laugh hysterically at the facial reactions of people when they first hear it. A combination of revulsion and hysteria.

I like dead baby jokes, adding "that's what he/she said" to conversation for impromptu lulz, and just generally making innuenduous jokes of any sort. Gutter-mind, if you will.

But I like working with kids. And being around kids. And hell, I love stupid kid jokes.

What does that say about me?
