Because it woudl let you buy say, a 16 gig one, and buy cheap 32 or 64 gig micro sd cards to get more stage for the money. Also makes it easier to transfer photos or video straight form a camera or other micro sd card using device.

Apple can't maintain a 400% profit margin by giving people cheaper alternatives.

Because many people have the irrational belief that they need lots of storage space.

(In fairness, if you're using it as a photo viewer, then I can understand why you need the capacity).

I have found that, in general, almost all of my computing needs, OS and all, fits in about 80 gigabytes. There's about 40 gigabytes perpetually unused in my 120 gb SSD.

If you purchase the Camera adaptor slot you can copy data from the iPad to the micro SD flash cards that the Camera adaptor holds.
Sure it isn't 'more flash' for the system, and you can use it to move data on/off of the iPad quickly.

Instead of say, a microsoft surface, where you get your 64Gb device and simply add a 64Gb memory card?

It will make wasting nearly $800 seem cheap...

I did the "Cave of the Winds" tour at Niagara Falls this summer with the kids. If you haven't done it, you get to walk right up to the base of Bridal Veil Falls and get blasted by the water- it's actually really fun.

And yes, there was a guy there holding up his iPad to get a movie of it. I honestly can't imagine the thought process involved there.

Yup.

Let's not forget offline navigation. Good maps take up space. Also, how do you stream movies on a flight?

More memory is always a good thing, but I do detest Apple's price premium that is way out of proportion to the memory upgrade... and the continued lack of an SD slot.

Not to mention the entire concept of portability is inherently defeated when you're always required to be tethered to wi/fi/4G to access your data. It's my data and my paid for content, and I want to access it just as readily on my device on a long bus ride backpacking through Vietnam as I am in my apartment.

Absolutely true.

HP's "iPad killer" HP Touchpad had the same damn flaw. HP's execs' big idea was that they could upsell 32GB models for a $150 premium. Unfortunately, they didn't have Apple's brand loyalty to command unreasonable prices.

I own both a Touchpad and an iPad1, and to be honest, the Touchpad is probably slightly better... but the lack of SD slots is always grating.

elchip: I'm confused, haven't they already released the iPad 4?

They did, they just didn't tell anybody about it.

It's got an iPhone 5 power jack thingy and is a bit faster than the 3rd gen. I think the idea now is that new iPad releases will be in the Fall from now on -- no more in the spring. I think Apple was worried that people would skip a spring release in anticipation of a later better fall release. This way it'll be one a year, hopefully preventing that behaviour.

Every time they put out an upgrade, I brace for the stupid comments about how your old device is obsolete and Apple is deliberately messing with people to make more money.

Apparently stupid people think that all technological progress and improvements should stop with the model (of phone, tablet, computer, whatever) they happened to buy.

The reputation was earned by the first two years of tablets, each one slower and shorter-lived (and more expensive) than the iPad.

Actually, I don't particularly care about a 128 Gb iPad. They should make a USB 3.0 Lightning connector first before the start hauling out the 128 Gb tablets. As it is, transfers to an iPad is slow because you're stuck with USB 2.0.

Of course, the reason that it's stuck with USB 2.0 is that Apple sourced flash memories which cannot write fast enough for USB 3.0.

I would NEVER store porn on a portable device. Somebody may be looking over my shoulder, or one of my pre-teen nieces might get a hold of it to play Angry Birds then click on "Anal Busters" out of curiosity.

For a while now, my Android devices (S3, Nexus 10) have been able to hook directly into a USB stick or hard drive with a little microUSB-to-USB cable (they both have microUSB ports). The device recognizes and uses the storage well, and there are a lot of apps to help with such a thing.

\ Still not a good replacement for an SD slot -- only complaint about N10. *shakes tiny fist*

I love my Touchpads... my wife loves hers, and the kids screwed their up with the letting it die so badly that I can't get it to charge anymore.

Just took it apart this weekend to check the battery directly and got a complete 0 V, flat line, nada nothing from the battery... so ordered one.

Do NOT let your Touchpads go dead... it's their biggest flaw.

And for this thread... yup, the lack of a slot is pretty sad (considering that they ALL have a spot for a SIM card built in the casing (but not the hardware unless you get the rare and expensive unreleased 4G version).

But the worse thing for ALL devices is the lack of battery access... I'd be happy to have my devices 1mm thicker to have a door and replaceable battery.

At 32GB, at least is enough for a fait amount of things, but I really would have liked to have an SD card slot.

If they would have added those two things, they would have probably sold a LOT more.

/but have no interest at this point to put Android on it.

Yes, Clockword Mod is the boot menu that does this.

Also, when Touchpads get drained, you can usually bring them back to life using the Touchstone charger (uses inductance).

Check the forums, you'll see what I mean... if you have a Touchpad that drains too much, getting it back up can be a major headache... mine, I tried every possible trick that I've found repeatedly... the battery simply imploded or something. Just tried the last thing I could... by letting it be dead for over a month so to discharge it enough so that the charging circuit resets, and then hit it with the TouchStone and the charger simultaneously.. and still nothing after over 8 hours.. then tried anoth 8 hours or so on low power charge... and that's when I opened it and found that the battery is completely flat line.

I am typing this from my HP touch pad running android and have absolutely zero problems with it.  For a total of 200 bucks I got a 32 gig tablet, touchstone charger, Logitech wireless keyboard, and a little travel bag.

I have had it for about eight months and have maybe one glitch that was my fault. Plus it works with my android phones...  and I have access to tons of apps that work.  Like Netflix and hulu plus.

No reason really to boot into webos anymore.

I'm still pretty happy several months after selling my iPad 2 64gb and getting a 10" Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 to replace it. I'm digging the SD card slot, Bluetooth mouse for productivity when I need it, and the recent upgrade to Jellybean. I can transfer files without needing to use Kies (Samsung's version of iTunes), and I can print from just about any wireless printer (the iPad only printed from AirPrint printers- One of the reasons it pissed me off).

I think the thing I like best about a 10" Android tablet is that I can set up widgets, unlike on the iPad, and have whatever I like on any of the pages. It's pretty handy not needing to open an app to see my email, calendar, photos of my girl, and the weather forecast, among other things.

I also like that I can get apps from a few different places. I'm not stuck with iTunes (or Jailbreaking).

That said, I would still like another iPod touch. While I love my Galaxy Exhibit, the iPod is just thinner, faster, and sleeker. I also have a ton of iOS apps that I'd like to use... The true tragedy of this digital age! I can't sell apps second-hand.

And herein lies the problem. Every complaint of Apple is always answered with a work around. Some people just like their tech to work natively.
