But, but, but mercury is the worst thing ever and I'm supposed to be deathly afraid of it.

Very cool, but wonderfully dangerous stuff mercury. funny that in Jr. High we were allowed to play with it without concern, now it's like a class 5 EPA incident if you have a drop of it... :(

In my youth, before anyone knew better, we played with mercury all the time.  Thermometer broke?  play with the mercury.  High school chemistry class?  Oh Jesus, they had gallons of the stuff.

Wear gloves and you'll be fine. The biggest danger with mercury is sucking it up with a vacuum and dispersing it as dust than can be inhaled.

There are some mercury compounds out there where "wear gloves" is nowhere near good enough.

Of course methyl mercury and metallic mercury are not the same compound (for similar reasons why sodium chloride is necessary for health, but you shouldn't eat metallic sodium), but it's all about dose -- that tiny little drop of an organomercury compound will kill you. So, how pure is that mercury metal you're playing with?

Well, it was clearly pure enough to not kill me when I was younger!

Now I have an image of someone eating Pop Rocks, except their entire head bursts into flame.

Why not pop the balloon with a needle on a stick instead of in your gloved hand?

Why was this done with no visible containment other than a plastic keg tub?

Why was this effect not in Terminator II?

They should have shown in sloshing around in the bucket more....didn't need repeated slo-mo angles

yeah I thought the same thing.. the mercury hitting the bucket was the most interesting part but they kept ending the clips too early

That was cool.

I used to play with mercury all the time when I was a kid and I'm potato.

I think they did that was done because the stuff was not entirely contained within the bucket and they didn't want to show that and have to put up with the response from people who like to care about that sort of thing.

No, even then it's unlikely to be absorbed into your bloodstream. Heating it is extremely risky - it becomes reactive, and most of its compounds are both toxic, and far more soluble in your bloodstream.

Probably extremely pure. Mercury at room temperature is not highly reactive, and, as most of us know, tends to "expulse" contaminants due to its high liquid density.

I used to have a small vial of mercury that was in a 1950's era chem kit we found at a yard sale. Played with it endlessly, never had gloves, and I don't have cancer that I know of.
