I thought this was exactly the kind of package Romney and other Republicans were complaining Obama hadn't gotten pushed through during this last election season.

2013-01-28 10:22:48 AM
This is pretty simple, really.  EITHER we want the cheap labor, or we don't.  If we don't, well then pack them up and ship them out, just don't come crying when the price of produce and hotels skyrocket.  If we do, well then it only makes sense to come up with some sort of a way to document guest workers.  It wouldn't necessarily have to even be a path to citizenship, just a permanent or semi-permanent guest worker status of some sort.  Get those people at least somewhat `in the system'.

TPM is reporting that there is a massive bipartisan immigration deal on the table.  The group that worked it out is Robert Menedez, Dick Durbin, Michael Bennett, and Chuck Schumer, John McCain, Marco Rubio, Jeff Flake, and Lindsey Graham.  It contains a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants and an easier path for children.

So yeah, this is really Obama holding a fake scandal at bay.

As Sean Trende put it:  Gonna be great chuckles when GOP passes imm reform, nominates Rubio, still gets 30% of Latino vote.

I'm not sure pushing Sen. Menendez as a leader on immigration reform is a good idea right now.

I'm not pushing him and that isn't a legitimate source.  He's in the group, that's all I'm saying.

True immigration reform would be a major accomplishment for the Obama administration. It could also be an opportunity for the president to find a way to enact legislation in a bipartisan way and set the stage for less rhetoric and more meaningful legislation.

Benghazi, meanwhile, will be sorted out by history.

Would a real scandal actually have to be referenced in the media with a media invented portmanteau that combined the name of one of the greatest scandal of the 20th century? It seems to me that a real scandal would be able to withstand its decline into obscurity because of its own merits and not have to latch on to those of the unrelated Watergate Hotel scandal.

And... with that, the GOP will oppose it. Tooth and nail. Opposition to Obama trumps rational forethought of how to ensure the future of the party.

The Dems have made a few gains on the LGBT line, but the civil rights angle is bigger. They know it, and this advance.... whether it succeeds or fails, is more practical evidence of which of the two parties anyone who might be considered 'Latino' is looking out for them.

Good bye GOP.

Problem is, this will never make it past the House.

Boehner has no control, and the Tea Party still wants ideological purity rather than maintaining electability.

Hell. To them the two are inexorably linked. Romney lost because he was not conservative enough.

Boehner has shown a willingness now to simply abandon the Hastert Rule. If he keeps doing that, who knows.

There are parts of the INA that just need to be rewritten, although judging by what I've read in the Washington Post link someone upthread posted, they're just going to use the existing framework of immigration laws here. A pathway to citizenship doesn't mean people are going to magically become US citizens tomorrow or even by the next election or even the next election after that. With the current wait times for certain countries (if they don't decide to fix the visa system), people will be waiting almost a decade just to become permanent residents. You have to be a green card holder (permanent resident) for 5 years before you can even apply to become a citizen, and a lot of people just stay green card holders for life.

Godscrack: [img850.imageshack.us image 702x544]

I always get a chuckle whenever anyone brings up Mexico's former ownership of the Southwest. Mexico had a precarious hold on the land at most, with fewer than 100,000 non-Amerindian inhabitants in the area. When the United States annexed the land, about 90% of those people remained.

I also don't hold much sympathy. Mexico was pulling some shiatty economic stunts against Texas. They just didn't expect the Anglos to rebel the way they did. Had the Texas Revolution not occurred, in which the US would have not been brought to war with Mexico, the southwest might look much different today.

The other reason I don't hold much sympathy is because the US had captured Mexico City. General Scott took the city in 1847. We could have annexed the entire country had we wanted. A lot of people were pushing to capture everything north of M.C. They're actually fairly lucky that the US settled on the terms that it did.

nekom: EITHER we want the cheap labor, or we don't.

It goes beyond cheap labor. The US is having a hard enough time dealing with its own underclass. Republicans are using "starve the beast" tactics against public schools at a time when ESL and special needs enrollment (who are both farking expensive to school) are at historical highs. Same with job retraining programs. Same with the social nets.

The left is having a hard enough time trying to get people to accept the national health care law as it is. Adding 11 million largely poor and disenfranchised people to the rolls is going to heavily strain the system, especially since many of them avoid the sort of preventative care that would aid in keeping costs low. Republicans are going to utilize that to attack the entire system's existence.

Then you have to ask where you want this country to go. Unskilled labor is increasingly being replaced by mechanization. If America's manufacturing base does return, it'll do so with a lot fewer people. Those that do work in those factories will tend to have very specialized skills. You can only have so many service jobs.

shiatty economic stunts like telling the illegal immigrants from the US that they couldn't keep their slaves in Mexico.

How dare President Fart try to wag the dog by doing his job!

Hahahahahahaahah! They're going birther against repubs now. Apparently their latest thing is that to be a natural born citizen, both of your parents have to be citizens. So, according to them, a citizen who marries an immigrant and resides in the US will have children who are not natural born citizens.

The "gang of 8" proposal is only 5 pages and worth reading. My one concern is that the amnesty program is tied to "finishing" the border security upgrades. Who decides that? A coalition of southwest governors, mayors, and community leaders. Since those people are largely a.) conservative and b.) against reform, I worry that they'll stall any of the reform components because the border still isn't "secure".

Overall though, if the above compromise is what it takes to get a reform bill passed, then I'm okay with it.

H1-B workers aren't citizens, and most return home. And they often do jobs where the labor pool is limited. Under conditions that American workers simply won't do them. Yes, the National Park system has a LOT of H1-B workers, because oddly enough, there aren't enough folks with the skills necessary who will commute through the parks to get to the facilities. In tobacco country, and often in rural areas, kids are leaving and not working on the farms. Are there folks who might like to do these jobs? Are they actually there? That is the difference. I'm sorry this outrages folks that aren't doing those jobs, but feel someone ought to.
