Bathia_Mapes: A doctor at the police station confirmed she wasn't drunk, yet she was still unlawfully kept in custody.

The hammer is going to come down HARD on this one. The officer in charge is going to have a long time to think about what he did when he's on paid suspension.

Hi my name is BlaqueKatt and I am autistic(on the high-functioning end of the spectrum). And Fark+a few other message boards is the entirety of my social interaction, neurotypicals don't like my kind much in person, here I seem normal. Yay!

BummerDuck: There really ought to be more tests to become a cop. Maybe set the IQ bar just a bit higher, and get rid of the thugs.

I was just watching this last night:

media.hiponline.com

"And speaking of tough guys, I'm getting a little tired of hearing that after six policemen got arrested for shoving a floor lamp up some black guy's ass, and ripping his intestines out, the police department announces they're gonna have 'sensitivity training'. I say: hey, if you need special training to be told not to jam a large cumbersome object up someone's asshole, maybe you're too farked up to be on the police force in the first place. You know what they ought to do? They ought to have two new requirements for being on the police: Intelligence and decency. You never can tell, it might just work, it certainly hasn't been tried yet."

C18H27NO3: Always hearing the argument, "Well that's just a few bad apples making us all look bad" as far as police are concerned.
But then you hear a new story about more police doing jacked up shiat every other day.
You know what? It's not a couple bad apples, it's not a few. It's a lot. A LOT.
I wouldn't put it past any cop to do something nefarious if they thought they could get away with it or keep the department out of hot water.
There will be another story here soon, and then another, Ad infinitum.

fark `em.

Now, now. It's that 1% of cops, that tiny, small, insignificant 1% of police officers....that get a bad name from the other 99%.

You've never met anybody that is on the high end of the autism spectrum, have you?

I've worked at 2 major theme parks and have dealt with thousands of people a day. I've still encountered only a handful of severely autistic kids, but the few that I have met have changed my view of autism. I feel for families that have been dealt that card.

Yes, but from what I've seen in movies I bet you save a ton of money on calculators, not to mention the amount of time saved googling baseball statistics. It's like god's way of equalling things out.

Enemabag Jones: The law is the law.
It is up to the police to make the arrests and the courts to go from there.
So what law did the autistic woman broke?

Disrespecting an officer.

Why didn't she just show some basic respect to the officer, and then things would work out fine.

/Cops just enforce the law, it isn't like law enforcement is a job where you have to deal with people first.

The My Little Pony Killer: super_grass: Hey, the last time I checked, autists commit mass shootings and are considered "mentally ill", whatever that means.

Last time I checked, Asperger's isn't Autism.

/and calling them "autists" makes you sound kinda douchey

All alone, or in twos,
the ones who really love you
walk up and down outside the wall.

Some hand in hand
And some gathered together in bands. The bleeding hearts and autists
make their stand.

And when they've given you their all
Some stagger and fall*
after all it's not easy
Banging your heart against some mad bugger's wall.

* I'm guessing those are the epileptics

/ or maybe they really are just drunk

Not a fan of catch all type legislation that allows police to arrest people anytime they get sand in their panties. Drunk and disorderly, disturbing the peace, rape...all just made up shiat to oppress people.

fusillade762: police assumed she had been drinking and arrested her.

If only there was some kind of test---

At the police station, a doctor confirmed she hadn't been drinking, but still the police tried to pursue her through the courts

Oh for F*CK'S sake.. Sue the shiat out of them.

This problem could quickly be solved if the prosecutor and the arresting officers were taken out back and hung. Their replacements will be a bit more careful.

Agreed. I was willing to be slightly amused till I read that part.

They do test them. And don't hire them if they score too high.

ABC News reports that the Second Circuit Court of Appeals has dismissed the discrimination claim of an applicant to the New London, Conn., police department who was rejected because he scored too high on an intelligence test. The department's reason for rejecting high-scoring applicants was that they might become bored with police work. The policy, the court found, met the rational-basis test.

I'd link to the ABC article but it's got auto-play video.

Criminalizing autism? I knew the private prison industry was looking for fresh meat, but that seems a bit excessive.
