I realize that having one hit record can go to your head and it's a nice idea to think you can make a career out of it, but there's a name for bands that have one hit record.

Sounds kinda pitchy, dawg.  Much poppier than I'm used to from them, but I don't hate it.

I am very sorry to hear about Julian Casablancas' testicle accident. My sympathies to him and his family.

That song was awful. It sounded like Radiohead was trolling me.

They actually had 2 hit records but you get the idea, yah. Quirky pop doesn't seem to have much of a long ball game.

I honestly thought someone had farked up and uploaded an ultra sped up version to their site, until halfway through when it turns into a normal Strokes song for like 2 lines. And then goes back to shrill ball-crushed vocals.

It helped that Weird Al used it.

"is this it" was great
"room on fire" was pretty good.

i actually listened to that soundcloud clip, and it sounds nothing like the strokes.

it's sad. i love synthesizers, but i don't love when designer garage bands run out of material and use synths to compensate.

it doesn't even sound like julian.

R.I.P. strokes

I like Room on Fire better than I like This is it. Reptilia is their best track IMO.

After those two albums, only the single Juicebox caught my attention. Haven't heard them since.

They had two hits: My Sharona and Good Girls Don't.

Even so, their debut album is a power pop masterpiece.

Technically, they had three commercially successful records. Eh, they had a good run.

I don't see how anyone could like a band that stole the riff of it's biggest hit from Tom Petty

/made it 21 seconds into the new song. it sounds like I was playing an NES game

"I seriously doubt that there is any negative intent there. And a lot of rock & roll songs sound alike."

Good god, need Adblock and noscript for iphones please.

I just listened to it. The 8 bit sounding thing was a little weird to start, but I got used to it pretty quickly and I kinda liked the song after that.

Made me think of a Cake's Easy to Crash.

yeah, but they didn't know if he was okay with them using it when they recorded and had it mass marketed around the world. It's all great that he is being a good sport about it but it doesn't change the fact that they used it without asking him first

I'm not sure if they've ever openly copped to borrowing his tune but in my experience a lot of bands will start to sound like the songs they cover and it influences their music. The extent to which it becomes a "rip-off" usually just depends on fan reaction and how noticeable it is. I like Tom Petty more than I ever enjoyed the Strokes in the '00s but to me Last Nite is still a good song regardless of how "stolen" it is.

Agreed, so very much agreed. That said, it's not as if Zeppelin didn't have it coming.
So far as I'm concerned there are no original ideas, just different levels of inspiration.

It was one album's worth of good tunes, spread out over three.

The last one was just.. no.
