The problem with any religious intervention in the affairs of the real world is that the intervenors inevitably believe in their own infallibility because they are doing the work of GOD. Makes it hard to have a reasoned debate.

It's terrifying. There are almost no doctors left in the country that perform late term abortions- almost no options left for women who have really terrible pregnancy complications or who find out late in a pregnancy that their wanted child will be born into a short life of terrible pain.

George Tiller was a really good man, who took really hard cases and provided incredibly compassionate care. The stories his patients tell about him make me cry every time I read them.

Dr. Leroy Carhart, who has a similar practice, has to wear a bullet proof vest everywhere he goes. His clinic has to have armed guards. His family has to be protected at all times.

It gets very, very frustrating  for people in reproductive health advocacy to see how much is tolerated extremism is tolerated on this issue. It also gets frustrating to see both sides treated as equal- last I checked, there were no pro-choice health care advocate militia groups organized around threatening opponents with bodily harm.

That one always makes me roll my eyes. My mother was born in 1953. Legal segregation was around until she was 11 years old.

A lot less racist than I was raised to be. Not necessarily by my parents, but by absorbing cultural attitudes and the prevailing attitudes of people around me. It wasn't until I was an adult and until I started actively reading perspectives from people of color on racism and until I started actively seeking out information about social and political inequality that I was able to start to unravel all the toxic ideas you absorb without realizing you're doing it.

Stuff like the idea that black people are needlessly resentful of a system that represents them just fine. Stuff like the idea that the criminal justice system is fair, and that America is a country that provides justice for all. Stuff like the idea that poverty is somehow tied up in the moral failings of the poor.

It took a lot of time and a lot of work to get through that much bullshiat.
