The handlers get quite attached to the dogs. They spend a tremendous amount of time with them, for years. At home and at work. The handler is almost certainly devastated.

Nope.  There are none around here, and even if there were, it's not smart to take a basset hound off the leash.  If he could, he'd follow his nose to the next state.  That, and I'm scared of big dogs, and if I saw one coming toward me, I'd probably start screaming and crying.  It could be the friendliest, most loving dog in the world.....but it's big and I don't know it.

Look at it from the dog's perspective:

They're loyal to the point of stupid. Otherwise they would not be used for these types of duties. The dog almost certainly would have chosen to die rather than let his/her master die.

That sort of loyalty does make this a tad tragic, but better the dog, IMO.

Exactly right.

People who cherish the lives of animals more than their fellow humans are often socially misfit human beings. They've attached themselves to animals because it's so much easier than attaching to fellow humans. A person can be a complete selfish shiat of a human being, yet their pets will love them unconditionally to their dying day.

Pets cannot begin to have the complex emotional responses and feelings of humans, even though many pet owners project those emotions onto their pets.

Pets are not "better" than people, they're just simple.

2013-01-28 12:54:03 AM
Is it seriously contentious to say that it's sadder for a human to die than a dog? I love dogs - I'm glad I have my basset but if comparing his death and, say, my sister's or a friend's no contest I'm sadder about the friend. The people in here who believe otherwise seem to me like... a woman who thinks a man's death is sadder than a woman's or... something. Can't think of a good analogy but goddamn - have some human pride. We made dogs what they are. There is no dog without humans - only wolves who would rip your throats out and feast on your tender insides.

Gyrfalcon: It fell off a roof.

I'm sorry, but that's very sad. If it had been a human who fell off the roof, under the same circumstances, we'd all have been laughing our collective asses off.

Are you kidding? A few people, maybe, but otherwise the thread would be overrun with ever-so-farking-serious speculation about how this was the Secret Service guy who Knew Too Much.

Like, 700 posts, easily.

2013-01-28 01:06:32 AM
And it's sadder because the dog has a choice. When a secret service agent or soldier dies, it's a tragedy. But it's offset by the sheer volume of effort someone has to put into getting that position. The Secret Service is not easy to get into.

Thus it is that accidentally dying is worse than a secret service agent on the job because the agent worked very hard to be in a position to die where they did.

Sadder still is the dog because the dog doesn't get a choice. The dog didn't choose bomb disposal as a career. It was press-ganged from birth and didn't have a choice. Dogs being dogs, it probably would have followed its handler out there anyway, but small animals are on par with children in terms of agency, and so from a moral perspective they're the same in most cases.

So this dog's fall ia the same as a child's fall. Informed consent was impossible so it must be assumed the dog would have chosen the job if it knew the risks. Chances are the reverse is true, as dogs are troopers and team players, but until we have a dog-English dictionary we can't be sure and must err on the side of caution. Much as a child dying after innocently climbing on the roof, unaware of the risks, so too this dog should be mourned more than an adult human who trained extensively to take risks in the name of the state.

Incredibly tragic situation. Having been a kid when my dad had his K-9 dog with the service, I remember how close they get to their handler/handler's families. They're great dogs.

/Our shepherd, sadly, didn't qualify.
//Maxx was headstrong.
///Dad's dog was badass.

2013-01-28 01:36:57 AM
I don't think it's irrational hatred to say I value a human over a dog. It's just prioritization. If we're going to go at it from that perspective then have any of you dog valuers ever swatted a fly? Crushed an ant? Stepped on a roach? Killed a spider? Plants are living beings that breathe just like us if you really want to get down to it - they just happen to inhale CO2 and exhale O2 whereas we're the opposite. Nobody in this thread (except that one troll) is saying dogs should die or is taking joy in the death of a dog. I think some of us are just trying to say that on our scales human lives weigh a bit more than dog lives. If a dog and a man fall off a boat I'm saving the man first but I'd sure as fark try to save the dog too.

In fact if we're comparing dogs to children in terms of agency then why do you trap your pet dog in 1 location and force it to eat your pre-approved diet. It should be allowed to make its own choices after age 18 shouldn't it? Forced dog slavery for human amusement is wrong... just wrong...

/loves dogs, always had one.

The My Little Pony Killer: Insert "people who harbor irrational hatred for lesser animals" everywhere that you've made generalizations about people, and that perfectly fits the way I feel right now.

That's where you're completely wrong. Not placing pets on a pedestal higher than humanity doesn't indicate hatred of animals. It indicates a realistic assessment of pets lack of intelligence, complex emotions, feelings, or anything approaching them.

I love dogs. I really do. I also realize they're very simple critters with simple needs and absolutely simple thought processes. Anyone can relate to a dog, relating to humans can be hard. Dogs are easier, no question, it doesn't mean they're better.

Pets have a place, but that place does not begin to compare to other humans. Loving dogs as I do, if forced to choose between the lives of my human loved ones and all the dogs in the world, it would be no choice at all.  That doesn't mean I hate animals, it only means I love my humans so very much more.

So many assumptions. So much fail. Dog ≠ child. Child death is not > adult death. Informed consent? LOL!

RandomRandom: Popcorn Johnny: No it's not sadder that it was a dog you ignorant fark.

Funny. I've never had a animal try to mug me, beat me up, judge me, tell me how to dress, generalize my entire life based on who I voted for, judge me based on the car I drive to the job I have, etc. So does that still make me a "social misfit" for valuing the life of a non-judgmental animal more than the life of a pontificating prick such as yourself?

Those dogs cost tens of thousands of dollars to train and, well, they're pretty awesome dogs. The idiot handling him really needs to lose his job.

THIS
The dog fell off of a roof. That is not an accident, that is neglect and abuse.
Toss the handler off the roof and then rush him to the vet.

I'm not sure Subby grasps the gravity of the situation.

Also, with a Belgian, one expects a waffle more than a pancake.

Actually it may not be negligence or abuse at all. We don't know the facts and circumstances of how the dog fell. Explosive sniffing dogs often are given a fair bit of latitude to roam and sniff for explosives. That is how they detect things. They often check cramped, hard to reach locations because those are often good hiding spots for explosives. Maybe the dog was doing a sweap, maybe the handler directed the dog to check an area. Dogs, like people, can lose their balance, trip, or otherwise misstep and if done at a bad spot that can lead to a fall. It may be an accident, or maybe the agent broke policy. There will be a significant investigation in all likelihood because an "agent" died in the line of duty so they will find out how this happened to prevent another incident from occuring.

Dog handlers typically are not drafted to do the task, they do it because they love animals. The handler was probably one of the first agents rendering assistance to the dog and I would imagine is broken up over what happened. I don't think it is fair to condemn the handler so quickly. Of course I could be wrong and the dog hater had enough and booted the dog off the roof to be free from his hated job.

I happen to agree with the first asshole's post. Human life > dog life

2013-01-28 08:19:23 AM
Let me expound on my previous point:

The headline presumes to say that a human being who knowingly sacrificed himself for another human being is somehow less sad than a dog doing that. Making statements like that grates me.

Sucks, hate to hear about dogs dying. I can definitely see how a dog can accidentally fall off a roof though. Our shepherd has slipped off our rock wall (6 feet) multiple times while he was sniffing around. Apparently, It's hard to pay attention to that drop when you've found a really interesting scent.

Yeah, it is. Dunno why, but it is. Maybe it's because humans are on average reasonably intelligent and can look after themselves. Maybe it's because dogs are generally cuter. Or maybe it's just because most humans are dicks.

By that logic: an aphid accidentally falling into a pit full of gasoline and giving up the ghost is sadder than if a dog fell in and died. But then most dogs are dicks compared to aphids, so maybe it is sadder.

/Pffft!
