Seems to me the only bad example being set is your action showing them that welching out on a bet is a-okay.

Going through on a bet by violating federal law (which I don't support, BTW) isn't that great an example either. Especially when you're a Congressman

Federal employees are not allowed to do narcotics based on an executive order issued by Reagan. Until that's overturned it will remain that way. I don't have a problem with this.. My corporate policy is that we don't do narcotics and if it were legal in GA I would follow my corporate policy or risk being fired. Pretty simple really..

Nope, it's not, but nobody should want to promote bet welching.  That's just disgusting.

How about not making the bet in the first place.

Tancredo was a surprise-but-solid supporter of the referendum, saying the effort aligns with his long-held conservative views that federal efforts to prohibit adult marijuana use is a prime example of "wasteful and ineffective" government.

A conservative who's a bit consistent? Refreshing.

I thought it was an ethnic slur on the Welsh (like "gyp"), but now I'm not sure. Seems there's no definitive provenance.

Ethnic slur "welshed."

What's legal has nothing to do with what's moral. Smoking marijuana being against the law does not make it bad or wrong, only illegal.

Interracial marriage? What can you tell your children besides it's been legal since 1967? Kids nowadays know that all races can marry and the parts fit in just fine thanks to the proliferation of interracial porn.

You explain to them that the war on drugs is wrong and harmful to our nation so you smoked a plant in peaceful protest of federal laws.

Do I get a cookie?

Why?

JesusJuice: What's legal has nothing to do with what's moral. Smoking marijuana being against the law does not make it bad or wrong, only illegal.

indeed.

We talk a lot about the intent and opinions of our founding fathers. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a group of people with a more perfected sense of both just how important rule of law is, and simultaneously... how important it is to call out bullshiat laws with flagrant and public dissent.

The duty of a citizen in a democracy isn't to blindly follow law. Those in authority would sure like it interpreted that way... but this is not the case.
A patriot seeks to better his nation by insisting legal change to better mirror sound moral judgement. We do this by being heard, and sometimes this includes illegal acts (to be clear, violence and outright property destruction have no business here. Those are tools of insurrection, not peaceful protest)

While peaceful protest is a staple of our nation, the lines get blurred as to legal protest. Define it however you want, history has shown that when moral justice is on it's side, illegal but peaceful demonstrations of speech and protest are to be embraced by our society.
And if you watch, those that wish to silence others in protest will often point out the inconveniences, the illegal technicalities and the perceived distastefulness instead of trying to attack (and legitimize) the protestors' messages. Speech is a powerful thing, and an illegal act can speak with a clear and rational voice if done correctly.

We should never forget that while our Congressman here may write those laws and be a representative, the government is ours and from us all it's power and influence is (or should be) derived.

He's the Federal representative of a state that has overwhelmingly approved legal pot... It's open to opinion, but in mine I think you'd be at it awhile to find a better person suited for the job of pointing out just how asinine the Federal policy is by burning a jay publicly.

42 years ago I was 42 years younger in a nation that was 42 years more segregated. It was groundbreaking news that I got from an unexpected source that interracial sex and love were not only possible, but actually good. Interracial love was not seen in public, in the media, or talked about in schools. It was before All in the Family broached such issues. If you didn't have a "if it happened before I was born it didn't exist" mindset you might have noticed this incident of enlightenment at the words of Mick Jagger are as much a "historic reference" as any. What? Was I supposed to say "Loving vs the Commonwealth of Virginia? "
