Why even bother when everyone knows its easier to just replace the whole market when it runs out of suppliers.

/When I worked for a big company that happens to make things that use toner one of my co-workers was busted doing this but at a much smaller scale.

Manhattan hospital clerk Marque Gumbs was doing so well moonlighting as a peddler of stolen property that he drove a BMW, shopped at designer stores like Burberry and vacationed in Las Vegas and Mexico.

Vacationing in MEXICO?!?! Ooh-la-la, fancy!

For ink-jets, yes. Lasers, not so much.

The $1.5 million scheme at the prestigious Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center exploited what New York City authorities describe as a largely overlooked, yet lucrative black market for toner cartridges and other office supplies.

So all of this is over 5 cartridges?

i'm thinking not too hard. getting them to control their "output" may be a problem.

What a fool.

After stealing the cartridges I'd have UPS'd them to an Amazon warehouse for sale FBA in the marketplace. In most products I'd be able to get at least 50% of list.

He should have been a broker or CEO - this sort of behavior would have been legal then. Also the justice system frowns on people on non Anglo color...

It's almost the perfect crime. The same business that will track every dime in the till and every piece of office equipment will not have a clue how many toners or drums they get through, they're "consumables". That can cost a couple of hundred dollars. A single set of toner for my HP colour laser retails for $300.

I think someone would make a bundle making inkjet printers that could take a generic inkjet cartage that could be refilled by anyone.

Why make $50 profit on a printer, once, when you can make $25 profit every six months, for years?

It has been done though. This was why all vacuum cleaner makes turned down Dyson and his bagless machine. They made all their profits from bags. Dyson did exactly what you suggest, or rather he made a machine that didn't need the consumable, and charged a premium price for it.

Would people pay $250 for an inkjet printer that cost pennies to refill when its next to a similar model that costs $50 to buy? How many people would do the sums? IMHO people bought Dysons because the rest of the machine was far better than the then competition. Had he just made a standard machine that happened to be bagless it would not have succeeded.

The day I can't buy cheap replacement printer cartridges from Amazon is the day I give up on keeping a printer in the house. Its convenient but it ain't $40-per-color-cartridge convenient.

A couple of years ago Epsom won a case banning all knock off inkjet refils for their printers from the US. Which was nice because they flooded the market here dirt cheap. I paid $16 for four sets of inks, sixteen cartridges in all.

It can be for lasers too. A Samsung-manufactured toner cartridge is $60-70. Frys had a Samsung laser on sale recently for $39. Yes, the entire printer plus starter cartridge for $39.

Even for ink-jets. Those starter cartridges aren't full. That's why a full set of reloads can cost as much as the whole printer.

Selling them like that would yield a 1099 and would leave big records. Why he thought he could get away with buying stuff that didn't fit their equipment, though, I don't understand. That obviously points to him. If it was stuff that could be used it could be others in the company doing it.

I've got some ideas about playing around the Amazon marketplace in a bent manner that I don't bother with because I do well playing it straight. But I suspect a good number of merchants are reselling goods bought on credit cards obtained through identity theft. And once you're up to identity theft you might as well make the sucker get the 1099.
