As a female hockey fan who is moving to Canada, I agree and can only sigh, shrug, and point to the location.

Living in Buffalo, almost all of my female friends are diehard Sabres fans. Some even moreso than their s/o's who are also hockey fans.

A woman got me interested in hockey, and more than half the fans I know of are women (or at least claim to be on the internet).

A friend's sister is one of the most hardcore Rangers fans that I ever met and IIRC, she was even head of their fan club at one time.

My husband asked me what a forecheck was while watching the Blackhawks game last night. He also didn't know what a long change was.

I didn't RTFA, will probably not get a kick out of it.

Unsurprising considering where it came from. The only times I've ever heard misogynistic shiattalking from fans was at Rangers and Devils games. This includes guys being shocked that I knew anything about hockey because they assumed I was just there for the "cute players". I was then of course called a dyke for actually liking a "man's sport".

There's a good reason I hate Rangers and Devils fans.

Sorry you had a shiatty experience with some fellow Devils fans, they don't reflect on all of us.  Those guys suck.

THIS - please make good jerseys in women's sizes, too. A men's jersey in an appropriate size for me is too baggy in the stomach and uncomfortably tight across the hips.

And in Rangers team colors - none of this all-pink jersey shiat.

/Also, wise man

All the female hockey fans I know drink beer like a man. They can probably put up a good fight too. I'm ok with that.

I didn't read the article, but since it's New York, all their teams (talking NYC - I have respect for Buffalo) are garbage, so is the media and so are most of their fans.

This article wouldn't be so bad if they changed the title to apply to wives/gfs of hockey fans who aren't fans themselves. Calling it "The Girls Guide to Watching the Rangers"? That's farking stupid.

Hockey threads here just wouldn't be the same without the ladies. Don't let a few jerks discourage you from enjoying hockey!

In other news, I just watched the Hawks go up 6-0 in an extra-awesome game against the Wings, featuring brilliant PKs by the Hawks and BONUS HOCKEY to end it 2-1.

yeah that was some offensive, patronizing nonsense.

on the bright side, the hawks remain undefeated.

I dunno, I know plenty of female Devils fans. Plenty of female hockey fans in general. You'll run into dickheads no matter where you go, you probably just got unlucky there. Either that or since you're obviously from around NY/NJ, you mostly go to those games, and you just haven't had a chance to run into jerkoffs at other arenas.

And honestly, this isn't a hockey thing. Guys will act this way with women when it comes to any sport. Football, basketball, baseball, soccer, whatever.

As a female hockey fan, I'd like to find the guy who came up with this shiat. I'd drop the gloves, jersey him, and then knock his teeth out.

Then I'd go to the sin bin for five.

I did not realize that hockey was having issues attracting women fans, they always have seemed to have a very solid fan base in the women compared to other sports.

And the women hockey fans certainly do not need help in understanding the rules of the game, they are borderline fanatical.

Yeah, I bet you'd like it if no one ever called you out on your bullshiat, huh? It's not about being "tough." It's about not letting people talk down to you.

As a woman who got into hockey 5 years ago after moving to a new city where hockey was a bigger deal than my old city (pre-Stanley Cup), fark you Rangers. Of course I asked questions and for rule clarifications. I did the same when I was introduced as a kid to baseball, football, and basketball. So I give a sincere fark you. I would also love if the NHL teams would produce sweaters for ladies that are not in goddamn pink or sparkles.

2013-01-28 08:17:36 AM
Heh... That's farking ridiculous. There wasn't one person in the room when they put that together who said, "Maybe this is the wrong approach, guys?"

2013-01-28 08:31:55 AM
It wasn't the Rangers - it was a contributer. I'd like to think that any organization as big and as public as the NYR would be a bit more savvy (if nothing else) than that.

You do see them for the NFL -- jerseys in women's sizes which were cut in order to fit a woman, using the team's actual colors. It would be trivial to do the same thing for NHL jerseys.

dstanley: WTF *is* a goddam forecheck anyways?

Strong pressure on the puck with the goal of creating a turnover. Your forwards put pressure on the defense when they have the puck, forcing them to make passes and moves under pressure, with the hope that they screw up and turn it over. It makes it harder for them to make plays, makes them do more and more complicated things with the puck, and turns little mistakes while doing those things into big, costly ones.

How hard a forecheck you're using and how many guys you have doing it depends on the situation of the game. Holding a lead, you're going to use one guy, and he's not going to be particularly aggressive. Trying to get the puck late in a game while you're behind, you're going to move to a two man or even three man forecheck, and you're going to tell them to go hard. The drawback, of course, is that if the opposing team eludes the forecheck and makes a play, the forwards you have up challenging them aren't going to do much on the defensive side of the game. It's also tiring- forechecking well involves a lot of stops and starts, and changes in direction, so you couldn't run an aggressive forecheck all game unless you were really desperate and you didn't need your team to have legs any time in the following week.

Oh, it's also a lot of fun, and frequently rewarding. Taking the puck off somebody and getting a shot at the goalie or making a good play is a great feeling, even if it doesn't turn into much of anything.

Ah Linda Cohn, always great for trying to tie every single thing she speaks about back to New York. What's that Linda? You like the Giants? I hadn't noticed that after the last three times you referenced them while we were talking about THE REST OF THE LEAGUE.

Seriously, I give the woman credit for being as/more knowledgeable than a given male sportscaster but I can't stand listening to anyone who has to wear their fan card on their sleeve as openly as her. I suppose it doesn't help that I don't care for the Giants, Knicks or Rangers.

I lol'ed at how "great" Rangers' fans think Henrik Lundqvist is

I mean, he's good, but he's not Goaltending Jesus like that website seems to think...

Also, Y'know why I like going to live hockey games? The chicks man, the chicks.

Hockey crowds have more pretty women than like every other sport plus UFC and wrestling combined.
