the GOP really made themselves look like idiots during those hearings.  did they really just expect Hillary to just fall apart under cross examination?  I don't like her very much at all but she's tough as nails.  you don't spend that much time playing high level politics and NOT learn to take a hit and give back as good as you get.  the GOP should have prepped the hell outta their questions and approach before even thinking about hauling her ass up in front of live camera coverage and trying to rake her over the coals.

FTFY.

Honestly.  The Republican Party simply does not have the intellectual firepower on board to square off with Hilary Clinton.  This is what happens when you build your party on a platform of anti-intellectualism and religio-emotional rabble-rousing.

Interestingly, I was on Clinton's side in this.  But no matter who was right, the GOP did indeed have an opportunity to strike a crippling bow to the Obama Administration by way of Clinton.  Even if she were an avenging angel straight from Heaven and single-handedly won the War on Terror, they could have twisted her, led her, and made it sound like she used the 4 dead Americans as human sacrifices to Cthulhu, on Obama's orders, if they were good.

Everyone in the GOP are all way, WAY out of their league.  No chance at all, up against Clinton.  Or Obama, for that matter, if were ever to happen.  Being intelligent does not get you nominated, if you're a Republican.  Your religious and anti-gay/abortion/anyone-not-just-like-"us" credentials and your potential to unthinkingly spout the Party Line, however incongruous it may be, are what get you nominated

i'm sure the Republicans will find something to salvage from the wreckage but...yeah.  Hillary came out with a couple/few dings and some scratches but mostly unharmed.  the GOP tho...complete flaming wreckage.  again, its like they believed in their own mythology rather than doing their homework and coming up with a plan of attack.  i'm sure hillary prepped the hell out of her side of things before she walked near those hearings, and I gotta say - her hard work paid off.  she rocked the GOP back on their heels and they never recovered.

That's precisely what I was trying to get at - the Republicans don't value intelligence and prep work.  They value that emotional repetitive myth-telling approach to create truth in the minds of the public, and they've reduced their entire method to only that.  They don't have anyone who knows how to do otherwise.

Hilary Clinton knows her shiat.  IMHO, she's one of the most talented politicians of the late 20th/early 21st centuries (if not the most talented).  And she's really, really smart.  And she knows how to do do her damned homework.  You can bet she and at least a dozen staffers prepped for this non-stop from the moment they got wind of it.  That's what you're supposed to do.

I think she's not as smart as her press releases would have us believe but..yeah.  Hillary was smart enough to prep for her hearings.  smart enough to know how to manipulate the Republicans into sounding like morons.  she's also experienced enough to know how she looks on camera, knows how to use that to good effect.  basically, Hillary did her homework and was ready.  what floors me is how badly prepared the Republicans were for these hearings.  how the f*ck do you get Hillary on camera, under oath and nailed to the floor...and then NOT prep like mad to grill her into making a mistake?

I keep expecting the GOP to have some level of basic competence and I keep failing to find it.

They weren't playing for the win. They were playing for the soundbytes. This is an issue that isn't really going anywhere, but it makes folks look busy. There is no way that anyone in the GOP leadership actually believes the drivel of this scandal--at least no one that has any intelligence or foreign policy experience--but it does play well with the rubes. It makes folks who are still dragging their feet about the economy, who realize that they've been systematically, and for years now, undermining the security of those self same embassies and offices, and looking to shed the blame and shed scrutiny away from themselves. And Hillary is always a good target for that. She is symbolic, and folks are still pissed at her during the Clinton years for NOT simply sitting back and being a pet First Lady.

This wasn't about trapping Hillary, or placing blame, but about filling up a news cycle or three, and keeping attention away from other things that are even less savory--like inaction over the budget, like undercutting security, about legislation that targets minorities and women, about efforts to gerrymander the f*ck out of states, and it is not about winning, or even seeking the truth, but about creating a distraction for the rubes, who will be so incensed by Hillary being Hillary, and a President who they hate, to focus on the crap job that Congress has been doing these fast few years. It is akin to your office mate loudly stacking papers and muttering about the terrible filing system, and lack of IT support, and client lists that are misplaced, while the boss is taking a walk around the building, after that self same office mate has been spent the last four hours giggling at Angry Birds...

It's not about nailing anyone, it's about distracting the public, and not just any public, but their own support base, because otherwise they might have to do some real work.

In fairness, look at who they sent in. Not exactly great intellectual lights, these. But, given that all their job was to give her enough rope, and then let the editing room do the rest. That's all this has been. An exercise to hand over to others to edit and parse and quote mine, and THEN build up an excuse train for WHY WASN'T MOAR DONE? THEY'RE JUST ASKING THE QUESTIONS!

They aren't even looking for base hits, but figure that just if they splice in cuts of folks taking swings, that they can just drop in sound effects and stock footage of home runs, and no one will be the wiser. At least not with the folks that they're actually playing to.

could you also point to something which they have done in the last 10 years?
could you also point to where they call out the luddites and marching morons for being morons and luddites?

I was being semi-rhetorical, I was living in Wisconsin when it happened. It was in no small part to the amount of money the Koch Brothers and Devos/Prince clan (ugh, f**k that whole family). The tea party revolt and media's mislabeling of Russ as the most left senator off of a few votes didn't help. Russ also had a history of not playing dirty and was just unwilling to fight in the dirt with Johnson. Finally, there were just some stupid voters out there, I remember an interview of someone voting for Johnson they asked her why she was against Feingold and she said it was over one of the bills he voted for. They informed her he actually had voted against that bill and she replied that that changed nothing.

Peter von Nostrand: This is the guy that beat Feingold? Really? Really?!?!

Well, to be fair, Wisconsin was sick of Feingold bullshiatting about the fact he wasn't in the pocket of lobbyists, especially when it was discovered he used lobbyists in his campaign ads that claimed he wasn't in the pocket of lobbyists. That and his "maverick" gimmick was overplayed.

But I hope Ronny gets his asses handed to him next election

Sad.

machoprogrammer: Peter von Nostrand: This is the guy that beat Feingold? Really?

Democrats need to run only women in the next election cycle. Women run the men around by their nose in this state. That's why there is so much manly chest thumping and football related stuff here. Women here like to vote based on genitals and the men vote for who the wife says to vote for.

Weaver95: Benevolent Misanthrope:

Honestly.  The Republican Party simply does not have the intellectual firepower on board to square off with Hilary Clinton.  This is what happens when you build your party on a platform of anti-intellectualism and religio-emotional rabble-rousing.

I was watching those hearings and kept thinking to myself - this is an EXTREMELY rare opportunity and the GOP is completely blowing it.  they had Hillary up in front of cameras and under oath and...they let her smack 'em around and call them 'susan'.

Jesus, somebody quoted Blankman. This is the greatest reference Fark has ever displayed.

Agreed. One of the problems the republicans have is that they actually beieve the bullshiat they spout. It's not just to create and control the narrative or project the right image for their supporters, they actually are that divorced from reality.

Between Walker and this dumbass, Wisconsin has a lot to answer for.
