Wow, and I thought the one in RI was bad.

I can't believe it's been 10 years since that happened.

So is anyone left alive to read this? Am I the last person left alive?

justoneznot: Really sad, people need to stop using pyrotechnics in small clubs.

Or people need to stop covering the walls and ceilings with extremely flammable material.

Or both.

Was the nightclub named Em Chamas?

2013-01-27 07:58:34 AM
From the BBC:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-21220308

They say the fire began when a band on stage started a fireworks display at the Kiss nightclub in the city of Santa Maria, in Rio Grande do Sul state.

A reporter at the scene told local radio that the nightclub had a capacity for up to 2,000 people and was believed to be full on a Saturday night.

Thick smoke engulfed the venue after acoustic insulation caught fire, officials say.

 I'm noticing a trend here....

Mrtraveler01: Wow, and I thought the one in RI was bad.

Same here.  Actually played there a few times, and to this day I still don't know how it feels to be so goddamned dumb that lighting anything larger than a lighter on that stage was a GOOD idea.  Hell, never mind the whole "flammable walls" thing, you could touch the light rigs while you played!

\and don't get me started on the fire inspectors, they deserved prison time as much as everyone else

Because I can guarantee you that this is the first thing going through the minds of officials in Brazil at the moment.

Regarding the RI disaster, I read somewhere that a lot of people died in the doorway of the club because as people tried to escape the fire, they would fall/accidentally get pushed down. Then the people in back of them would fall on top of them.

Yes, but I will guarantee you that the Staples Center isn't insulated with flammable material and that they didn't set off fireworks next to it.

It's one thing to do it in a sports arena, it's another to do it in a regular sized building.

2013-01-27 08:15:46 AM

Kyosuke: Or people need to stop covering the walls and ceilings with extremely flammable material.

The problem is, despite the full knowledge that said materials could save lives, they still charge a ton for them.  IIRC, it would've cost the Derderians about $350-400k to soundproof the main room at The Station, and that was for maaybe 2000 square feet of soundproofing, ten years ago. (None of which would've worked, BTW - they still had solarium windows in the pool room directly off the main floor.)

That's all true. But if (god forbid) something did somehow go wrong and a big ire did break out... I mean, we are squeezed in there like sardines on the main dance floor, especially at midnight.

In a strange way it actually pays to be a hipster.

If your favorite band is a one-armed Mongolian who atonally throws discarded batteries against overstretched rubber cargo tie-downs while reciting "Mr. Belvedere" scripts with the punctuation removed and he only plays "pop-up" gigs in the kitchens of abandoned Arthur Treacher's franchises, you can be fairly sure your life will be panicked-trampling resistant.

40 out of the 100 that died there died in the exit hallway, or directly leading into it.  At least a few of those deaths are also retraceable to Great White & the security dumbasses who blocked the stage door for a minute or two before realizing they were in trouble.

It's something that most people don't think about. It's a good habit to have whenever you get on an airplane, theatre, or a hotel. Just get in the habit of checking out where the exits are.

If they wouldn't have panicked and jambed the doorway or new about the exit behind the stage, most of them would have gotten out.

The Cocoanut Grove Fire - worst nightclub fire in history with 492 dead - happened just over 70 years ago, and people died for pretty much the same reasons - flammable materials (including in the air conditioning system, oddly enough) and not enough exits.

Link :

The second world refers to the former communist-socialist, industrial states (formally the eastern bloc), the territory and the influence of Union of Soviet Socialist Republic. During the second world war, there were nineteen communist countries; after the fall of the Soviet Union, only five communist countries remained: China, Cuba, Laos, North Korea and Vietnam. Along with "First World" and "Third World", the term was used to divide the nations of Earth into three broad categories. In other words, the concept of "Second World" was a construct of the Cold War and the term has largely fallen out of use since the revolutions of 1989, though it is still occasionally used to describe countries that are in between poverty and prosperity, many of which are communist and former communist countries today. Subsequently, the actual meaning of the terms "First World" and "Third World" changed from being based on political ideology to an economic definition (see the terms developed country and developing country). This might also cause semantic variation of the term between ascribing a region's political entities and its people

Yeah, I've never really been one to do dumb shiat at raves. And honestly I think my raver days are behind me. The last event I went to the massive "White Wonderland" on New Years, I realized that as much as I enjoyed the drinking and dancing I would have preferred listening to the awesome music but riding my bike. I do think my time has passed, and I'll stick to clubs every now and again from here on out. And maybe EDC every once in a while. Man that's fun. Been to the one in an Bernadino, the one at the Coliseum when Oakenfold headlined. It was crazy my gf (at the time) and I woke up in Sunnyvale at 8am drove to LA, got into EDC when it opened at 4pm partied our asses off until 4am (close) and drove back to Sunnyvale. One hell of a day and night... good times.

This is one of Brazil's worst (if not the worst) fires, which hit the Joelma Building in Sao Paulo in 1974. The death toll was between 179 and 189. Following the Joelma fire, Brazil's fire code was improved. If the death toll from this new fire is over 200, the record's been broken.

StormChaser: It would appear that bluenovaman was just trying to point out that this part of Brazil is slightly less of a shiat hole than the rest of the country.

By Human Development Index (HDI), Rio Grande do Sul is on par with Qatar, and is the 5th most developed Brazilian state. The highest HDI in Brazil belongs to the Distrito Federal (HDI on par with the US or Netherlands), followed by Sao Paulo (on par with Israel), Santa Catarina (UAE), and Rio de Janeiro (Cyprus). These states, plus Mato Grosso do Sul (also Qatar) and Parana (Hungary) have higher HDIs than Brazil as a whole. Southern Brazil is the more developed part of the country.

Joelma turns out not to be Brazil's deadliest fire. It was a fire in 1961 at a circus in Niteroi, near Rio de Janeiro, which killed more than 300 people, more than Joelma (or this new fire).

To all who are saying Brazil needs more codes, that is horseshiat. Brazil has a shiatload of codes. What they lack is enforcement. Most laws go completely unenforced; when they are enforced, the officers can usually be bribed. This is a problem made worse by Brazil's culture of corruption and cronyism, but let's not kid ourselves: a tragedy like this could happen again in any nightclub in any country at any time.

Anyone who hasn't seen the video of "The Station Fire" should go watch it. You can find it on YouTube, or in higher quality on bittorrent.

It's probably one of the most disturbing things you'll ever see but it will probably change the way you check for fire escapes when you go into public places in the future. It will likely change the speed at which you'll react if you ever find yourself in a developing emergency situation too. It's one of those things you won't forget.

skinink: Great White brought in for questioning.

Y'know, they've played out county fair two out of the last three years, and every time they come I make it a point to not be anywhere near this town for fear they'd set it all ablaze.

Or, if the band is setting off enough pyro for the 4th of July in a building the size of a closet, its best to get a head start on everybody that will begin running for their lives five seconds later.

bluenovaman: Thank God they are, sadly I'm sure some distant family was in there. My family was one of the founding families there. I'd call that area more 2nd world due to the progress made, but it is still a shiathole in a lot of places.

Good to hear.
And of course, like most countries in the world, the people who live there, no matter their station, are always better than the people that run the place.

These fires always happen the same way.

Club over capacity, single door exit, and highly flammable interior.

Just add idiot to set it off.
