I've tried re-watching the show lately, and I just hate it. I remember loving it, but it just annoys me lately. I do not really know why.

I guess I'm just tired of the "misunderstandings that get out of hand" genre of comedy.

censoring of a racial slur has the unintended effect of censoring satire on racism?

You don't say.

Also

"Attitudes to racist words were different then; some people might find certain phrases offensive.'"

I'm pretty sure most people considered that word offensive in 1975.

I like the show, but watching it is actually stressful. It is so manic that it causes me to get anxious watching it.

I like how racism that isn't racism is called racism because it cheapens actual racism and makes racist people feel they being treated with racism.

Good luck with that sentence, but I assure you it makes perfect sense.

Dramatic Irony is a delicate tool to wield, but comedy writers think it's a sledgehammer. It's one of the reasons I just can't watch 95% of American sitcoms anymore.

It's even more offensive without the full on language because it never reaches the heights of ridiculous hyperbole required to make it so over the top that it becomes funny instead of just offensive. The whole point of that movie is to jab at the people who seriously say things like that and if they don't actually say those things it just destroys it. If someone is offended by full on Blazing Saddles then they are too stupid to understand that they're mocking exactly that sort of ignorance and xenophobia.

/"we'll take the n*ggers and the chinks but not the irish" isn't as rediculously nonsensical as if you say "we'll take the african and asian americans but not the irish." it just loses the whole thrust of the joke which is pointing out the absurd hierarchy of ethnicities that such a statement infers.

My parents saw this in the movies when they were dating. There was a black couple in the row ahead of them. My parents were afraid to laugh at first. Turns out the blacks couple was laughing the hardest in the theater.

Yeah, but I'm guessing it's not necessarily because of racially charged words, but because syndicated airings of shows automatically cut 3-4 minutes out of shows from that era, anyway, so the channels can air more commercials.

/25 minute shows from the 70s get cut to 21 minutes for local airings, and even Nick at Nite and TV land showings now.

FTFA - Sadly, though, this isn't the first time BBC eagerness to censor its past output has robbed us of brilliant comedy. The Goodies - the most successful laughter series of the Seventies and a show that drew ratings-busting audiences - is simply never repeated.

In Australia they have recently added more TV channels, and are putting on a lot of old 1970's UK comedies, including 2 I thought I'd never see again - "Mind Your Language" and "Love Thy Neighbour".
"Mind your Language" is set in an adult English language class and consists of every stereotype there is. The polite and deferential Japanese man, the sexy French woman, the Chinese girl who has Mao's little red book, the lecherous Italian bloke, the ugly German woman etc. I reckon it's the most racist show ever.
"Love thy Neighbour" is about a white (Daily Mail reading no-doubt) guy who has a black family move next door and the wonderful sophisticated comedy that ensues from this situation is both subtle and nuanced. At least once an episode the white guy says "Nig Nog" and the black guy says "Honky" and they never fail to get a laugh.
They also show The Goodies, which I can remember being essential viewing when I was a kid, but now just isn't funny.

Love They Neighbour and Mind Your Language were made by ITV, the commercial rival to the BBC. The Goodies was BBC.

That's not to say the BBC didn't have some shows that played on race, like It Aint Half Hot Mum about the British in India, complete with a white actor blacked up to play an Indian. I assume they just couldn't find an Indian actor...

I guess preview deliberately doesn't apply the filter so people won't notice it and thus experiment with ways around it (like adding punctuation, or changing letters to numbers, etc.) before committing their comments.
