Oh well. I'm sure this will result in a reasonable and calm debate, and not devolve into senseless name calling and pointing at potatoes.

I actually feel sorry for these people, it must be terrible to live your life in a constant of irrational fear.  The problem is, this fear is not ameliorated by a security blanket or a teddy bear, but with god and guns, which make my life and the life of other rational human beings harder to live.  I feels as though I need to tell my parents, who are deep into the Conservative Fear mindset, the same thing they told me.  There is no monster under your bed, or in the the White House, you are imagining it, now shut up and go to sleep.

The underlying principle of post-modern Conservatism seems to be that there is some nebulous 'They' that wants to take 'My' stuff.

So yes.

Did Fark surrender the Obvious tag to the UN Black Helicopters like Obama wants to do with our nation's sovereignty?

Judging by their reaction to lack of WMDs, and its consequences, and insurance reform, and its consequences, I was able to draw conclusions independently.

Looking at MRIs of a large sample of young adults last year, researchers at University College London discovered that "greater conservatism was associated with increased volume of the right amygdala"

Ah, I see. So the article's assertion is based on a slightly modernized version of phrenology.

No, no, that's totally legit. I'm not laughing, it's just a spasm I picked up from an imbalanced chakra. Once I get my sublaxations cleared at my registered Chiropracter and take a few glasses of this really powerful homeopathic stuff my shaman prescribed, it'll clear right up.

I forget who said it, but I am reminded of the quote: "Conservatives don't need God as much as they need a Devil."

Anyone who lived through the Bush Administration yet thinks Democrats/liberals are "the problem" isn't really worth discussing politics with.

The first clue was back in '08, when they appointed a bipolar schizophrenic morning zoo DJ to become a de facto party leader.
Seriously, the only difference between Glenn Beck and a lunatic shouting "The end is near" on a street corner is better representation.

It's not as if there is fifty years of easily verified experimental, lesion and clinical case data that suggests that GASP, parts of the brain are specialized for different faculties and functions.

What? There's no such thing as a 'blue' Limbaugh fan. We're all 'red-blooded Americans'. Salon is trying to covertly convert me, a dittohead, into a Messiah-worshipper! Just what you'd expect of the mainstream media. You'd never see such an obvious ploy at Fox.

You snark, but comparing the size of different parts of the brain (which has actual neurons that do things) is EXACTLY THE SAME as comparing lumps on the skull (which don't actually do anything themselves).

And the same fifty years of data has failed to find meaningful correlations between volumetric comparisons of regions and behavior. You can tell by the way that behavioral psychology still exists. none of these physiological correlations to topical politics has outlasted a year or two of fad time, because they're a step below voodoo in predicative power.

I'm laughing because I am familiar with the body of scientific knowledge regarding regional brain function, dude, not because I'm not. Nodes and regions are important in function, but barring extreme deviations the relative size of various regions means pretty much nothing in psychological terms. Activity, yes (sometimes). Size, no.

This study is what you would call "grasping at straws", it's what you do when you haven't had anything publishable in a while and your funders tell you do do something with the implication that it needs to be something that makes waves. And in neurology you don't have the easy answer of claiming you found out a random historical figure was gay.

Nice compilation of all the nuttery in circulation in right-wing media circles, but not much new science reported.

Still, Sunday mornings tend slow about here, so what the heck.

First, I'm not saying this study is rigorous at all, but yeah, sometimes size does matter and is a useful parameter to measure. For example, in undergrad I worked on a study that attempted to correlate the size specific regions of the corpus callosum with the differing types of multiple sclerosis. Now that was checked against diffusion MRI, but to say "size doesn't matter at all" is grossly under-simplified. Also, you're immediately discounting basic MRI as a diagnostic tool.

Is this really news to anyone?

Today's GOP is a party for the super-rich. The problem with this is that there aren't many super-rich people around (and not all vote GOP).

IOW, the GOP needs to find people dumb enough to vote against their interests. People who are easily led, like the religious, the fearful, the paranoid, and the ignorant / misinformed.

Or, you know, post an old article with flakey neuroscience in it.

Well these kinds of studies pop up every now and then.

There's a pretty good criticism of a similar study here as well as here. Another specifically addressing this one is here.

This one has an awesome quote-
Another problem is that most brain regions have multiple functions, Farah says: "Who says fear is the only function of the amygdala?" She notes that this brain region also responds to sexually arousing images and pictures of happy faces, and one recent study found a correlation between amygdala volume and the size of people's social networks. Likewise, the anterior cingulate cortex has been implicated in a long list of cognitive functions. By picking and choosing from the previous studies, "they're indulging in a bit of just-so storytelling," Farah says.

Conservatism is a disease. Symptoms include paranoia, authoritarianism, decreased analytical and reasoning abilities, extreme avarice, and a propensity to hear voices from imaginary beings. Probably shouldn't let people drive while infected.

Study and article are in no way biased. I'm a liberal, but come on. "Science shows conservatives are inferior?" Why don't we round them up into "camps" where they'd be "concentrated" in one place so we could keep an eye on them? We could call these places "Areas Where Conservatives Are Retrained To Think Properly," or AWCARTTP for short.
