On that fall day, police responded to what they called a "gas and go" and said the culprit was caught on camera.

It doesn't *quite* have the same ring as a "dine and dash."

I saw a dude do it the other day. He just threw the nozzle on the ground really hard (made a loud enough smack so that everyone turned and looked) and hopped in his car and peeled out without closing his gas cap. Like dude, if you just put it back on the thing and drove off normally instead of making a scene no one would've noticed. Instead like 3 people pulled out their phones to call the cops at the same time.

Local BP gas station by my house when I first started driving had those old mechanical pumps. Pull out the pump handle then turn the lever to start the pump. The attendant would then use a key to zero out the pump after you used it. One of the pumps had a malfunction that allowed the the pump to zero out if you jiggled the lever. I would pump for awhile then zero out the pump and continue pumping. I got half my gas free that summer until the pump was fixed.

Yep I was a little dirt bag.

I hated people that did this, but cameras are cheap enough I also hated that my employer wouldn't install them.

Around here (Lexington area KY) it's been prepay for cash or use a card, just about everywhere, for at least the past 8 years or so. If they do that, how are drive-offs even possible?

Subby is probably right that "gas and go" perpetrators should choose a different gas station each time. But all you can conclude from this case is that you should change gas stations every ten times.

Oh man. Terry Pratchett may have planted some form of logic bomb in my mind. He was my favourite author back in the day - I have a signed 1st edition of Maskerade - although I did kind of grow out of him, in that I grew to dislike his reaching attempts to graft the modern, real world upon the Discworld - cf. c-mail etc.

But I cannot place the reference you're raising.

/Of course, he suffers from Alzheimers these days, but I would love to sit down and have a pint with him.

Pretty much. Every gas station around here requires you to swipe your credit card or pay cash before you can pump. Except Jersey, where it's still illegal to pump your own gas.

It's kinda nice having a modern car that can go the full interval without needing additional oil. And my modern car has a TPMS which will alert me if one of the tires is significantly lower than the rest. It's not even a luxury model.

The rest was nice, tho. Especially the price. I still remember the day I put $10 in my motorcycle. Holy crap. Admittedly, it had a big tank and I went well into the reserve so I could squeeze in a bit extra to push it over the top but still...

a lonnnnng time ago, I used to work in the gas station/retail business. Being hick hampshire, we'd let people gas first pay after. I was a management flunkie who was sent to stations that needed help. In the week before I got there, something like 17 drive offs took place. The station was smack dab in the middle of a traffic circle of some fairly major roads, the maine border wasn't that far away.

I got on the cases of the employees, telling them to be more vigilant and to call every drive off to the police. Mostly it was a matter of getting them to pay attention to what the fark was going out outside the booth. Interestingly, as long as I was at the station, the drive offs almost ceased. Except for this one guy. In a pos that had a raised rear end, fat tires, lowered front end. Extremely identifiable car. I couldn't get his plate the first time he drove off. The next day, he was back again, I was doing paperwork when I looked up and saw the car. I asked the clerk if she had authorized the pump. "Of course." "That's the same guy that drove off on us yesterday." "Oh? It is?". Face palm. As I go to walk outside, he drove off. Still no plate.

He was back again the next day. I told the clerk not to authorize the pump, and she looked very nervous when I said that. I could see the guy standing there at the pump, flicking the handle on the pump repeatedly while looking at the kiosk with a "WTF?" look on his face. I was on the phone to the cops, telling them the car was there right now, trying to get gas again. I went outside and he jumped in his car and took off, seconds before the cruiser with lights came barreling along after him.

About 25 minutes later, the cruiser comes to the station. "Uh, yeah. Apparently there was a little miscommunication here, he forgot his wallet and was going home to get his money." I was incredulous. "What about yesterday and the day before that?" "Yeah, about that. He's going to come back and pay you what he owes, and it would be appreciated if you accept it."

I didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday. Somebody's daddy was a big shot somewhere. I said "Well, if he could be so kind as to remember his wallet each time he comes here, I'm sure everything will be just fine, would you agree?"

"Thank you. He's not going to do that again, I can promise you."
That was actually one of the more normal things that happened there. That year I spent working for that crew was a very weird year. I really wish I was into keeping a journal back then. Far too many farked up things are now lost memories, a lot of alcohol and drugs have been consumed since those daze. Probably just as well for plausible deniability.

I'm not proud of it, but I'll admit to being a "dipshiat, inattentive gas station employee" when I was one over a summer break during HS. An unused garage bay on-site was too perfect of a hangout for friends of mine to come over and smoke up while on the clock. I'm not terribly regretful of my actions only because the gas station owner was complete tool who would way too comfortably make impish comments about girls my age at the time...while also having a daughter who was my age.

17 drive offs the week before? then just one guy the next week when you blow into town? Can you say family and/or friends of the employees? I knew you could.

As to the other clown, must have been a cops son, if not *the* cops son. You should have demanded to press charges anyway, given the little f*rk a criminal record.

Also the oil interval thing has tk do with the technology associated with oil, not the car.your fancy car just has more things that can break nowadays.
