(ESPN)   Think your basketball team can't score? Northern Illinois had only 4 points in the 1st half after shooting 1 for 31, including 29 straight misses. Even better, they broke their own record of 5 points in a half earlier this year   (espn.go.com) divider line 40

On the radio they noted that some guy came out at one of those halftime contests and made a free throw, a layup and a three pointer, outscoring the entire team in 45 seconds.

But college ball is TOTES better than the NBA.

How bad must Eastern Michigan suck to only be up by 14 at the half when the other team only scored 4?

Well, you see, SEC schools have great defenses.

Seriously. These teams COMBINED for 22 points at half time. Wow. I thought Duke scoring 19 in a half was bad...

And they weren't even playing Wisconsin.

It cannot be repeated enough that the two worst offensive first-half performances IN HISTORY both happened with this NIU team this season. That is mindblowing.

Holy shiat, they lost to UNO.

They're clearly tanking to get a lottery pick.

The final score of the game was 42-25.

Both programs should be immediately disbanded.

How does a D-1 college basketball team lose a game they only give up 42 points in? I mean, UVa has lost some games to teams they really shouldn't, when their offense goes completely cold even as their D holds up, and even then I don't think they've scored less than 44 (they gave up about 60 in it), and they've won all four games they've held opponents to less than 42. Not bad for a 14-5 team, even considering how weak their OOC schedule is.

2013-01-26 10:17:54 PM
At first glance I thought maybe they were just running a slow offense and not putting up shots, but they actually took 26 more shots than their opponent (61 total). However they only managed to shoot 13%, one player was 0-10, and the team was 1-33 from three point range. That coach should be fired on the spot.

Just watch, NIU will be the 65th team, win it's play-in game and upset the #1 in that bracket.  And proceed to get blown out in the next game.

2013-01-26 10:22:09 PM
The coach should not board the bus back home. Seriously.

2013-01-26 10:48:37 PM
Even worse though is if you are the other team, and you hold a team to 4 points in the first half, and you are still only up by 14.

2013-01-26 10:52:18 PM
Oh man, NIU's team stats are just the best thing ever:

- They don't have a single player shooting 50% from the field. Best is F Sam Mader at 44.3%
- Second worst FT shooting team in the Mid American as well, 66.8% as a team.
- They have only made 78 three's all year so far (brisk 29.2% rate). By comparison, Creighton has made 187 so far this year.
- 8.9 assists/g as a team...15.6 turnovers/g. Ouch.

And yet, according to Ken Pomeroy, there are 14 teams with WORSE offenses than NIU, including the Grambling State that broke 60 points for the first time TODAY.

5 was the old record for a first half, subby. Not for any half.

I don't have to worry about my team not scoring. Travis Bader just hit 47 in one game to set this season's D-I scoring record for Oakland University.

This just proves that NIU has no business being on the same court as Florida State.

Even a terrible ACC team (much worse than UVA) would crush most of the lower half of college basketball. There are waaaaaaay too many D-1 teams anymore. 388 to be exact. They could cut that number by 75%, and most of us would never even notice.

Look at that! NIU scored  five times as many points in the second half as they did in the first!

How is that even possible? If a team like this is D-1, maybe they should drop them down a couple divisions. That's the kind of stuff you'd see in middle school basketball.

Eastern Michigan plays 2-3 zone defense (head coach is a former Syracuse assistant) and they have a 7-foot center, both of which are unusual for the MAC.

True, but nothing explains the atrocious shooting. NI actually got to the free throw line but only shot 53%. Their roster looks like a bunch of guards and small forwards which would seem to indicate they'd be quicker and have shooters; a quicker team swinging the ball vs a zone should get plenty of good looks, they just didn't knock anything down.

I suspect since it was a Saturday game the team went out drinking on Friday night then hopped on a bus early in the morning and played hungover with a couple hours sleep.

You do have to remember that an NBA game is 48 minutes vs. 40 minutes in college.... in addition, NBA is in quarters, so, they are given essentially 2 "free" extended time outs vs. the college teams (maybe college they get more time outs than NBA tho, I don't know the rules that close to know).

And there are not an infrequent number of times NBA teams have scored only in the 60s in a game, despite having 20% more time of play than in college.

The shot clock is also shorter in the NBA.

The fastest-paced offense in the NCAA gets 15 fewer possessions per game than the slowest-paced NBA team.

If you look at offensive efficiency (points per 100 possessions), the NBA teams range between 110.0 and 95.1 with a median of 101.6. The NCAA teams range between 119.0 and 72.7 with a median of 97.9. So the bad teams are REALLY bad, but the good offenses are actually capable of scoring at a higher rate than the NBA teams, though a lot of that probably has to do with the closer three-point line (136 NCAA teams take a higher percentage of threes than the leading NBA team).
