Amos Quito: What's the difference between the Mafia and Corporations?

No, seriously.

The mafia has an honor code?
The mafia is more willing to pay taxes if the feds leave them alone?
The mafia is honest about bribing politicians?

Is that weird? They may be criminals, but who said they're stupid? All this shows is that they're less shortsighted than Republicans.

According to estimates, the Mafia in Italy collects about a tenth of the agricultural subsidies paid by the EU. It's a small step from organized crime in agriculture and organized crime in renewable power, and the Mafia has taken it. Any place there is room for big money and corruption, you will find the bootstrapiest of the bootstrappy, namely organized crime.

One of professors when I was an undergrad was from a prominent European family and her brother was something big in the EU. She used to sneer at him and "those Italian mafiosi" he had to deal with in his employment.

This, not socialism, is the biggest fly in the ointment of doing things through big government and big bureaucracy. Although US and Canadian energy aren't directly run by mafiosi, they are run by people just as ruthless and greedy and every attempt to do something good risks becoming another form of "good honest graft" as well as the other kind.

Still, you have to try. The world doesn't save itself.

Well, it might. If the father of the Gaia Hypothesis, James Lovecraft, is right, Gaia is a big biatch dog and she will shake us off like fleas unless we turn to nuclear power quickly and cease to be a threat to her health and safety. He sounds a lot like a right-wing countryside-loving Englishman when he talks about energy, but he might be right about the need for an emergency building programme of nuclear power plants, just as people who claim that wind power is just a con game might be right. I can see the downside and some upside to all this. It's disappointing but there is no such thing as a free energy lunch and there seems to be no easy way, no panacea, no quick cheap fix to the basic problem of energy production, seeing as it is subject to the laws of thermodynamics.
