The 21 were sentenced over riots which killed 74 people after a football game at Port Said stadium last February.

Farking crowds gone crazy? I live in SF and between the Giants and the 49'ers, we get all these rioting, vandalizing, burning "fans" (many bridge-and-tunnel asshats)... which I f'ing hate. But 74 people basically murdered, over a sport!? Fark.
/I wish our sports teams would lose so we don't have the destrucitive, dumbass sports fans rioting in our streets

Im sure it had less to do with the game and more to do with regional rivalries between locals.

I totally get the rioting. You're sitting around watching soccer so after an hour you think "I guess I'll punch the guy behind me and break up the boredom."

I think there are some English hooligans who should be given free vacations to Egypt.

Complete freedom is not compatible with democracy. If there is to be any kind of social organization, it must have limits on freedom; the right to shoot a gun ends where the right to live begins. Different cultures have different levels of freedom that they can withstand, before destroying themselves. To have democracy, a culture has to have as much freedom as possible without destroying the social structure that allows an organized military defense of their territory (aka government).

The Egyptians had that under Mubarak. The US, ruled as it is by insane drama queens who are not-so-secretly trying to destroy the world for being imperfect, helped their counterpart drama queens in Egypt depose him. Now Egypt is paying the price, and will continue to do so until the US looks the other way long enough for a new military dictatorship (NOT a theocratic dictatorship, though the IDQs will insist there is no difference because both are imperfect and therefore equally bad) can be imposed.

They don't need a reason, just an excuse.

Lol, but in this case, the rioting began within a minute of the game starting. Either they were REALLY bored, or, as mentioned previously, this had more to do with local rivalries, political instigation, combined with idiots.

Egypt mostly sux.

A family recently got 15 years for converting from Islam to Christianity. And the brotherhood is an ancient group of frightened crouching masturbaters.

They were so innovative a few thousand years ago. Except for slavery and incest, of course. What the hell happened?

I just happened to be in port in Bahrain last February and caught the end of the football match at a local restaurant. It was on one of the TVs they had there. Couldn't understand a word of the commentary (it was in Arabic) but a good match is always fun to watch. Good game and then as soon as time expired, the fans rushed the pitch and the visiting team ran away. The guys I was with and I were wondering if that normally happens. Apparently not.

Wow, the Muslim Brotherhood is getting soft! By Sharia Law, apostasy carries a death sentence for men (women just get life imprisonment).

They really need to ban football over there.

Most soccer rivalries, especially the bloody ones, use soccer as an excuse for more traditional reasons to beat each other into bloody pulps. You know, good reasons like religion, economic class, regional and cultural differences. PS: I miss the Old Firm.

At least 30 people have died in Port Said, officials say, in clashes sparked by the sentencing to death of 21 local people over football riots in Egypt.

Supporters of the defendants tried to storm the prison holding them and attacked police stations.

You say we are a violent and backward culture with no sense of empathy or common sense? WE KILL YOU TO PROVE YOU'RE WRONG...AAAHHHHHHHH

You should be banned from the city for wishing such things upon our teams. A single MUNI Bus was damaged in October by the that one assclown whose face was plastered all over town because of it. You probably agree with Mayor Lee's suggestion to ban all alcohol service during the Super Bowl.

I was going to say the Muslim/Arab conquest of Egypt but then I remembered the Egyptians were at it long before then, including an antisemitic pogrom in 38 AD.

So the answer to "What the hell happened?" is "Probably aliens." Or "I have no bloody idea," whichever sounds better to you.

I'd like to think civilization decreases such things, but the older I get the more that sounds like wishful thinking.
