And I do believe he is racing today, as is Mikey Waltrip and Juablo (Juablo is defending overall champ, as I recall). Juablo is on pole in a Prototype, with Jamie McMurray in the car next to him. Waltrip, Clint Bowyer, and co-NASCAR-team owner Rob Kauffman are driving a GT-class Ferrari.

Is this the Daytona 500? That race takes 24 hours? I'm glad the only race I've been to was the brickyard 400 then. It was like 4-5 hours something like that. I dunno I was a kid I fell asleep. Those last 100 miles must be a biatch if they last for 20 more hours.
/do they have to walk the last 100 miles?

This is not the 500, each team has 3-5 drivers and the race is over when the clock strikes 24 hours, regardless of how far they've driven. They're usually in the 2,500 range give or take a couple hundred depending on wrecks and weather.

No, this is an endurance race.  I love racing, but you really have to be into it to watch it.  I'll try to catch the end tomorrow.

It is kinda cool seeing them race in the dark.  Do they still dim the track lights for this race?

I like how Wallmendinger and Marcos Ambrose are in the same car. And Kanaan and Barichello.

Lots of fun combos to keep an eye on.

There's an overall leader (usually one of the Prototypes), and there are the various class leaders (Prototype 1 and 2, GT 1 and 2, etc.)

Did... did Wallmendinger essentially admit that the 24 hour race is what got him on stimulants?

"This was the pinnacle of my career, and this is where it all started to unravel..." in reference to last year.

I read this morning they gave the Corvette a larger air restrictor, good for a few horses hope it helps....

I'm going to try to get to some dirt track races in the Santa Cruz area. Mrs Crotchgrabber and I are talking about making a day of it, going to the velodrome and riding the banked boards on our bikes then going to what she refers to as "the hillbilly races" after. I'll be at every race at Laguna Seca (we have an awesome schedule this year) and I'm going to try to make Indy and Cup at Sonoma.

I'm freaking giddy for racing right now.

Yeah, how 'bout them diesels?

2013-01-26 09:29:16 PM
Just wanted to check in and say I'm watching from my DVR recording and the sun is setting (I'm only 2.5 hours in because I had to work today so I'm way behind). I guess I'll switch to Speed online in about an hour and a half to watch some night racing.

Very happy to see the first race of the year (well, if you don't count the Dakar like I don't). Can't wait for Melbourne and Sebring!

Too bad that the Mazda cars are having such trouble. I guess they are Mazda Six cars with diesel engines?? I looked at mazdausa.com and there's no diesel option for the Six. What's up with that? One of the guys at work has a Mazda 3 and the hatchback one for his wife. They look really good, and are probably dependable. However, I sat in a 3 back in 2006 and didn't like the steering wheel position (I'm 6'4"), too close to the knees. We ended up with a Corolla.
The Audi R8 looks pretty fast.

Those Mazdas are running in the GX category - the X stands for eXperimental. Mazda sells diesels elsewhere around the world, and it is widely expected they will have diesels here in North America in both the 6 and CX-5 in the next year or two.

We need a Cup car in the GX category. For the lulz.

It will get lazier and lazier until the channel is non-existent and become Fox Sports 1 later in the year.

They need to look at their caution policies for future races. It might not be a big deal on an endurance track, but if I'm paying big bucks to watch a 2 hour race and they have multiple 20 minute cautions, I'm going to be pissed off!
/hey indycar, you too!

You definitely have a point, but I kinda get the feeling they intentionally take a more leisurely pace in these hours.

As long as they don't put a jet dryer out there while Juablo has a stint, they should be fine.
