The overall lesson from this is simple: What worked in the past isn't working anymore.

Twenty years ago, the GOP would have been able to get away with something like this, with little to no media attention until way after it was all said and done.

The Internet, simply put, has changed all that. And thank god for it. As long as the internet exists, unfettered and able to report ON THE MINUTE, the GOP's quiet efforts to subvert democracy will continue to crash and burn.

So Rachel Maddow, like my mom (hi mom) reads fark.

Which means she reads my comments.

My comments are highly influential.

Maddow has a show that influences the national discourse on politics.

Ergo, me commenting on fark has contributed the national discourse on politics.

See mom, I'm not wasting my time. Also, can you bring me down a bowl of cheerios? Thanks!

Or, her show's interns look here along with some hundred and eleventy other sites each day.

Possible, but the way things are worked in and the way arguments are built have occasionally echoed a point somebody made on fark that really makes me think it's somebody high up, and I don't think the staff on that show is that large (they occasionally do videos behind the scenes online, like once when a cocktail moment got bumped off the show, so they made the drink and passed it around the office instead). Not to mention something like this, which wouldn't have been approved to go on air unless she actually knew enough about the site to be confident in putting it on TV.

Fark is an influential site. It's provided silly and filler stuff to major news organization from pretty early in its history, and as the site has grown to include more serious topics, I don't think it would be a surprise to see more media savvy serious people pull stuff from the site, and if there's anybody on TV who could qualify as a netizen, it's Rachel Maddow.

occamswrist: She complained about the Florida 2000 vote clusterfark. But she mentioned a bunch of Jews voted for Buchanan because of the butterfly ballot. That ballot was designed by Theresa Lepore, a Democrat, so Rachel's jumbled sentence with the Jews for Buchanan and Katherine Harris was a nonsequitor. The butterfly ballot, being designed by a Democrat, doesn't reflect poorly on Republicans.

The point about that was the daftness of Florida, not the party affiliation of the participants.

I think we've got to the core of your issue. Your're so used to your world being Us vs Them, you don't realise that *actual* real news commentary isn't like that. It's not about "making the republicans look bad" (although that's occasionally inevitable). She's slams democrats regularly and often, it's just that democrats only occasionally do things as brazenly as some Republicans.

The point was that madness, historically, comes from Florida. You somehow rewired that in your own mind through a "how can this be read as attacking that Republicans?". The Buchanan 2000 fiasco was as a member of the Reform Party. It was a ballot ok'd by all four of the running parties. Yet you're read this as an attack on Republicans. The "Katherine Harris" was as part of a list of insane Florida issues. You've conflated them.

I think the problem here is you, and the bias you're bringing to the table.

I have to agree with occamswrist on a large amount of what he says regarding Rachel. My wife watches her show every day, so obviously I watch it often as well. Often I agree with her on items she discusses, and am glad to see her bring some items to the table that would otherwise go unreported nationally; but I do agree that she will often try to tie in unrelated things to make you think in a perspective that doesn't really have any regards to the original subject. She will also not cover or openly mock other perspectives that should be investigated in regards to the topic at hand, giving some biased reports that many just lap up and don't investigate more.
I'm glad she exists, but wish she would rid herself of this type of thing; it's a major problem in news reporting in this country from all sides.

No you idiot, it's a bunch of overentitled assholes at the right-wing Mackinac Institute who want to buy a city park that people use everyday and turn it into their own playground while leeching on Detroit for its services.

If you read the thought process of the people who came up with this idea, you'll see why no one took it seriously.

It's exactly like that. The most impressive thing is how she can string together apparently disparate issues over the course of a 15 minute segment to create complex broadbrush stroke arguments on some particular aspect of the political zeitgeist. That might be down to damn good researchers though.

This aspect is apparently exactly what annoys occamswrist though, so different strokes for different folks I guess.

I watched some of the 13 minute cip.

Her first segment was on a man who purchased the Pontiac Silverdome because no one else wanted it. Then a storm blew through the area and damaged the roof. The new owner said the roof would get fixed. But Rachel's connotation was pure, distilled shiat. Apparently fixing the Silverdome isn't good enough for her for some unknown reason. Who knows what the fark she wants. The way she said things made me want to punch her in the throat.

The second segment was about a small island on the US/Canada border by Detroit whose owners want to turn it into an Independent Commonwealth. Maddow is upset by this idea because apparently she wants the island to turn into the shiathole that Detroit is? I don't know what she wants and she doesn't really explain, she just criticizes people trying to save their neighborhood.

The third segment was on Gov Snyder passing a bill that only a few weeks earlier, was repealed by voters. When school boards, etc get into "emergency financial situations" because they overspent, this restricts their rights to make spending decisions because they've proven they aren't capable of balancing their budgets. Maddow only addresses the fact that Snyder passed a law that was repealed by voters earlier, but didn't discuss whether it was a good law or not. This article has more info. Then she says republicans are like honey badgers and dont give a "bleep". I could says the same thing about this democrat. But like I've said in other posts, its not just what is said in the news, but how its said, and what isn't said that is important.

Then she says Michigan republicans don't care what anyone thinks of them which is painting with a broad brush and would be as stupid as if I said *all* democrats are losers when really its only about 60% who are losers.

That got me to the 4 minute mark of the 13 minute clip. Then she talks about Fark and it felt like when my 1 year old brings me a D battery and I act surprised and grateful for it.

Seriously anyone who watches Maddow and feels validated is a farking moron. Keep drinking that kool-aid.
