Conservative and Right are two different things altogether. Modern "conservatives" are nothing like they were even 20 years ago.

No. Liberal in the United States means "less right" than "conservative" is typically used to refer to. Just like conservative and right are not mutually inclusive, "liberal" and democrat aren't either. "Liberal" in Europe makes our "liberal" look like staunch neoconservatives.

Your suggestion was that "conservative" means fiscal responsibility. In the reality of American politics, they spend less on some areas, and shift it to others.

BronyMedic: I call shenanigans on this one, and I want more information. The brief blurb the Daily Fail presents makes it sound like the guy was basically raised in a cult which groomed him for what he did from an early age. I'm willing to bet based on that they put up some sort of mental defense, based on the fact the defense claimed he didn't have the capacity to understand it was wrong to do it.

Also, 13 is ephebophile, not pedophile.

To be fair, there are states in the US where sex between an 18 year old and a 13 year old is legal (under various Romeo & Juliet laws).

I think the defense arguments were a little gross, but I don't see it as a huge injustice that he was spared jail time.

Describing Rashid, the judge said: 'He's had an unusual education, certainly in terms of the sexual education provided. Comparing women to lollipops is a very curious way of teaching young men about sex.'

Huh. He seems to be saying it may take more than three licks to get to their tootsie roll center.

Even if the first amendment applied to this guy, I don't see how he could use it in his defense.

OOH! I get it, I think he's saying that he think the first (in the US) would grant him the right to practice his religion, regardless of if what he is practicing is illegal. Besides missing that the story isn't in the US, he's demonstrating a fearfully poor understanding of what Freedom of Religion means in the Bill of rights.

My religion says that 13 is the perfect age for girls to begin practicing their reproductive rights. With me.

Everywhere you look here, everything is overtly sexualized. And age is something hard to pin down. Is that girl in her school uniform with her skirt hiked up with the hem just below her bottom 13 or 23? And the temptation on the escalator and stairs to stop staring at the floor and just look up for a second, I swear, just a peek, and enjoy the delights the girl so wantonly displays. If I say hello and try to make conversation, am I going to be talking to a school girl on her way to school or to an adult woman playing dress up? If she smiles back and comes closer, I can't believe there's no other choice than to step away out of fear of the law. Such supple thighs. Wonderfully pert breasts. Long black hair and eyes gleaming with pure sexual evil.

Every day is a battle. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. You only hope that when you lose, the police don't come knocking.

Muhammad was a hypocritical asshole and scumbag and it's not surprising that his adherents tend to be hypocritical assholes and scumbags themselves.

Uchiha_Cycliste: sendtodave: teto85: He was just emulating the Prophet.

The Blessed Virgin Mary was 14.

wrong prophet. If fark is to be believed, Mohamed got down and dirty with a 9 year old. I say if Fark is to be believed because it's the only place I've heard that he bedded a 9 yo.

It's sourced from a Hadith:

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) married her when she was seven years old, and he was taken to his house as a bride when she was nine, and her dolls were with her; and when he (the Holy Prophet) died she was eighteen years old.

The common defense among Muslims for this is that it was simply a product of the time, that it was fairly common for children to be married off and then lose their virginity as soon as they hit puberty. Of course, since Muhammad's actions were praised by God as a model to all in the Quran, doesn't that mean that such things should still be permissible, and perhaps even encouraged, today?

The other argument is that it 's fake, that it never really happened, that he never had sex with her, etc. This is a fairly common tactic for Muslims. Whenever something they believe comes to be seen as barbaric or outrageous due to changes in society, they tend just to deny that it was ever a part of the religion or come up with some other explanation/justification that ignores previous history. The jizya is a good example of this: It was a hefty tax imposed on non-Muslims that fell under the rule of the Caliphate. It was intentionally designed to be too difficult for them to deal with both to encourage conversions and because it was the chief source of revenue for the Caliphate for quite some time. Payments had to be made in person to Muslim officials so as to remind the dhimmi who was in charge. Ask most Muslims today though and they'll simply tell you that Muhammad wanted the jizya to be the same as the zakat tax that Muslims had to pay, even though the zakat went to charity while the jizya funded the operations of the Caliphate and Muhammad himself set the zakat far below the rate of the jizya when he was in charge.

The 'Satanic Verses' thing that Rushdie almost got ran through for were also once part of the Islamic religion, with about as much good support as most Hadiths--sayings of Muhammad/others that have almost as much bearing on the implementation of Islamic law and customs as the Quran--have. For the first ~200 years of the religion, the idea that Muhammad briefly espoused polytheism and idolatry because he had been tricked by Satan (and not because he was attempting to save his ass from being murdered by Meccans) was wholly accepted until someone pointed out how harmful that was from a theological perspective was and they immediately disavowed it.

This on both points,

Everytime there's the Teacher/Student thing we get a bunch of Men's Rights Advocates complaining about a "double standard." Well here you go, from the reports it looks like he didn't use any force or coercion, she wanted to be with him.

Mentally capable of sexual consent? Yes. Of course they are. 13 year olds are sexual creatures by their very nature. They play and explore with peers their own age, male and female. It might shock you to learn that children as young as two masturbate.

Legally capable of sexual consent? No. Ethically and morally acceptable for them to even try to do so in our culture? Hell no, and rightfully so.

Pretty much everything 'known'/written about A'isha Bint Abi Bakr (hundreds of years later by medieval male clerics) has been highly controversial since the beginning.

Don't know anything about them, but Aisha and Katherine Howard would have made a great frenemies pair. How to be used by male members of the family. Yeah, Aisha really lost her necklace and her servants really picked up her carriage without noticing she was missing at that oasis. Girl was up to something.

Two teen-aged girls who represented everything the old men's real true loves were not, and who always had to live in the shadow of those women. Not their fault. The playing with fire the two teens engaged in was their fault; but initially being picked to be used by their own fathers, not their fault.

Fatima and Mary Queen of Scots can be the B Team looking out for Daddy even when Daddy is a fool ruled by his dick.

Depends on the culture. In a culture where childhood is extended beyond the teen years (and in the US, beyond the 20s into the 30s and beyond in some cases)........ 13 year olds should not be allowed to legally consent.

In a culture where childhood is short, and people have to reach mental maturity rather quickly when it comes to making adult decisions about food, shelter, work, family .. 13 year olds should be able to legally consent, because they're legally adults in every other sense.

Guess it comes down to the nest. If your culture pushes you out of the nest early, 13 is the right age. If your culture keeps you in the nest for as long as possible, hell no to 13.

Addendum: slave cultures should be different, in my opinion. Everything I said above is for cultures where people act like adults of their own free will. In slave cultures, the 6 year old slave having to be mature is not a good enough reason to have masters abusing slaves; especially in cultures where there's one rule for slaves and another for free men and women when it comes to sex.

Anything that prevents abuse of slaves is a good thing.

Perhaps some other news yes but not in this particular case. There are no shenanigans here. England and Western Europe have kow-towed so much to their immigrant Northern African and Arabs citizentry it is borderline ridiculous. Their state is so fearful of lawsuits and discriminatory charges that Muslims can pretty much get away with anything. At this point in history (especially after 9/11) Muslims pretty much have carte blanche to do anything in Europe w/o fear of consequence.

Again... it was an 18 year old having sex with a 13 year old. This is legal in several states over here in the US.
