This type of law is how racists continue to subvert the African American populations in America. You'll never hear a racist use the n-word. You'll never see a racist dressed in a KKK robes. You'll never be shut out of a restaurant run by racists. It's not how they work anymore.

Now they pick cultural aspects and vilify those. "Tough on crime", "anti-baggy pants legislation", "3 strikes and you're out", "welfare queens", and "urban culture" are all code words that racists use to target the black race without either using the word 'black' or specifying blacks in particular. They hone in on behaviors that society at large feels negatively towards and use that to create a system of laws that keeps blacks under the thumb of white society.

I can't think of anything more sublimely fascistic than laws dictating fashion taste.

Plus, cops probably love the sagging pants thing.  It makes the thugs so much easier to catch.

I don't get how the pants don't fall down but I also don't understand why people care how others wear their pants. I work with African American adolescent males aged 13-17 at my job. If it did bother me I wouldn't have made it past the first day.

Bungles: bratface: Quaker: So exposing one's boxer shorts by sagging one's pants constitutes "open and gross lewd and lascivious behavior", while all the upper middle class white guys here on the Cape can (weather permitting) jog down public roadways wearing only a pair of jogging shorts that are more revealing than any pair of boxers. That sounds perfectly reasonable and not in any way designed as a means to harass people from "undesirable" demographics.

No, that is also unacceptable. Along with any man who wears a 'Speedo' (I do not care how nice his body is), tight bicycle shorts, etc.

Why do you fear the manflute?

I do not fear it, I just do not want to see it flopping around in public!

Medic Zero: Amazing. First I'd heard of that, I'll have to look that look up.

Ask and you shall receive. His name is Councilman Kenneth Stokes, and he is a fountain of DERP. He told AMR their policy of waiting until the scene was secured by PD was cowardice  and that their job description was to get shot in the line of duty helping others if they were called upon to do so. He also threatened them that if they weren't willing to do it, he'd find a private service for the city that would.

His comments caused international outrage. EMS doesn't like being told their job is to waste their lives and serve as targets for shooters.

People have a right to make an idiot out of themselves without being harassed.

Besides, this is a great signal provided by nature that you should best avoid this thing, just like bright colors on a frog.

Bungles: dgriffith2: shakespear: A similar law was passed in Jackson MS, by an all black city council

i'm impressed. if we could get that mindset to propagate, we might have something here. i just cannot understand for the life of me why an individual would wear clothing in such a manner. it serves no purpose whatsoever, its bad hygiene, and i'm just so tired of seeing dude's asses. and what troubles me is that there really isn't much chatter about this that i've seen recently, but yet, i've heard much exposure regarding things such as banning public breastfeeding which is natural, and somewhat necessary and downright beautiful :)

Unless they're not wearing underwear, it's less revealing than the average cyclist.

Kids wear daft fashions. This has been the case since forever. As for serving no purpose... men still inexplicably wear ties.

yes, the children do tend to lend themselves to the latest trends (rhyme much? lol) and notoriously, as the upper echelons of society become more vehement against something they do, the tendency is to rebel. it is our nature to be at war with one another. so to resist it, truly, as the borg say....is futile. and cyclic. and furthermore, i served for 5 years in this nations Army. i took an oath when i shipped to uphold and defend the constitution against all enemies, foreign or domestic. And the laws were written in our newly birthed country the way they were due to british tyranny stemming from, among other things, lack of religious freedom and threat of subjugation. So, though i don't like it AT ALL..i will defend a man's (or woman's) right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of their happiness so long as it doesn't violate basic human tenets. Murder, rape and so forth

But Massachusetts is a liberal city. Only conservatives can be racist. Fark tells me so.

cherryl taggart: It's a waist band, not a butt band, a hip band, or as noted above thigh, knee or ankle band. Some of these guys just need to go ahead and quit wearing the bottoms at all. Be proud of your return to your robe wearing roots, whether African, Middle Eastern, or Roman.

Most modern trousers have a "waistband" that's designed to fall absolutely nowhere near the waist but close to the hip. You can't physically wear them on your waist, because there isn't enough material.

We don't have a large black population around here, but I really want to walk up to the white kids that think they are ghetto and slap their hat the right direction and give them a super wedgie for letting their pants droop.

You think that's bad, not long ago CA tried to make a go at outlawing pacifiers if it wasn't a baby using it. Under the guise of somehow discouraging drug use by banning pacifiers. =/

Listen, I would never wear them myself, but I can totally understand why a cyclist who doesn't wear bike clothes would like skinny jeans. Can you at least give a pass for folks who are trying to keep their pants out of their drive-train? Isn't that better than having them wear normal jeans, but drive a car? Those skinny jeans are making your commute shorter.

The laws are stupid. But so is walking around with your pants like that. It's like someone waving a rebel flag, you know that person probably isn't very intelligent and interactions are going to tedious.

I think its safe to say a law that gives you a potential 3 year prison sentence for wearing ill-fitting pants is unconstitutional.  Doesn't stop them from making a dumbass commercial threatening it, though,
