It took a team of 50 doctors to remove a pencil jammed into the brain of a 19-month old girl.

Must have been one fark of a big operating theater.

And nothing of value was lost.  Even though it ran through both hemispheres doctors say nothing vital was damaged.  Future air head for sure.

Anyone else get the sidebar x-ray of the head that took a full clip from an air hammer?

/Glad she's ok

Why do they have to point out that the pencil was colored? If it was white would they have pointed that out? Buncha racists.

I was going to be snarky and ask what color the pencil was but it was orange.

The cynical Farkette in me wants to know how soon charges will be brought against the parents for endangering the child.
My mothering sense can't imagine the horror of the incident.

The endangering was the not having the eagle eye on the weester on a chair, never mind the reckless use of coloured pencils.

Indeed, it was a pencil of color.

Is 19 month old enough for colored pencils? (Evidently not)
Maybe give the kid crayons next time?

Nope. Look at the CT Slice.

It went around the globe, not through it, and through the basilar bones into her brain. It doesn't even look like it involves the optic nerve.

I ain't no medical doctor (and I'm sure I'm missing the joke), but (from my limited understanding)the reason a bullet does such horrendous damage to the brain is because the shock-wave is about the size of a fist. While horrible, the impact of a pencil is...pencil sized.

This is about as bad as the 911 call we got the other day of a kid that was climbing peg hooks at a local store, slipped and impaled himself in the eye with a peg.

After all the cringing, I could only imagine that the parent must not have been monitoring, so the kid is just hanging there. Someone comes up, "hey, how much is this?? No price tag!"

Flesh is muscle, and should be myoglobin-red. Never understood why they'd call a pencil color "flesh" if it's a kind of pink. Just call it "skin" colored.

Good thing this didn't happen in England. There would have either been an immediate ban on all pencils or a requirement that everyone must wear safety glasses while engaging in the dangerous extreme sport of coloring.

I would hope your brain would grow with you through the growth spurts of puberty. Talk to a teenager (of any age), that brain hasn't stopped growing yet.

I do agree with idea of the shock-wave theory, but would also add that bullets usually don't stay intact and fragments will travel separately.

And to my untrained eye it looks like it went in thru her LEFT eye and ended next to her RIGHT ear. Not the way it is reported in the story.

Colored pencil.  Never sounded racist till now. Geez. They finally got to me.

I know the brain is a delicate organ and one slightest mistake could make the difference between life or death, but 50 doctors...really.

I'm thinking what really happen is that it was a team of 3 or 4 doctors who did the operation and 46 other doctors who just wanted to see a kid with a pencil lodged in her brain.

Four attendings and an assload of fellows and medical residents more like it.
