It actually makes sense, at least for some people. Large display for surfing, watching video etc and small, simple, phone for just making calls. It's not that much different to having a bluetooth earpiece. Cool that it's a remote shutter for the camera on the main unit. Be cool if it was a remote monitor for the camera as well.

You know, I would actually consider getting one of those. Cool idea.

People laugh when I tell them this, but within 10 years, we'll all be carrying a ~10-inch tablet wherever we go, like we carry phones now. You'll just get used to carrying a bag for it, or maybe your shirts will have a padded sleeve stitched into the back that you can slide it into.

You'll carry one of these things in your pants pocket that will always be in sync with it.

That's because it's stupid. The closest we'd ever get to something like that is something more PAN- personal area network. You've got a core CPU gadget in your pocket, with a phone peripheral, a 10" tablet peripheral, etc. You carry with you just the bits you're planning to use, and here's the real power- you can easily join any peripheral to the network. So you might not bring your tablet to the restaurant, but the restaurant hands you one. You join it to your network, order and pay, then hand it back. No data actually lives on the tablet, so there's no special security risk.

This is just a phase. Phones got smaller and smaller until they pretty much reached the sane limit, then smartphones got larger and larger until some of them are basically mini-tablets. Where do we go from here? I think they'll get smaller again.

I'd like a smartphone the size of my old flip phone, but I guess the screen would be too small to make it worthwhile.
