Meanwhile, I need to finish picking the oranges from my tree out here in Cali.

It's raining outside and it sucks. Also, there's fog.

Since when do they give names to winter storms ? Around here we call them monday, tuesday, wednesday and so on.

2013-01-25 02:22:08 PM
That's ok, Cali. We mock you when your lands burn out from under you in the summer. Oh and earthquakes. Oh and landslides. Oh and taxes.

Mokmo: Since when do they give names to winter storms ? Around here we call them monday, tuesday, wednesday and so on.

Since The Weather Channel decided to be more marketable and less responsible.

The National weather Service is not supporting the Winter Storm Naming system created and used by TWC.

Maybe pick a new naming scheme if you're going to get halfway through the alphabet 3/4 of the way through winter

They give names since gravity has damaged the ratings that were coming from Stephanie Abrams

It gives people something to hastag posts about a particular storm with, which was the main reason TWC started it.

Orko? Winter Storm Orko?

That settles it. The Weather Channel is nothing but clownshoes. WTF people? Can't we just get information without dressing it up in bullshiat marketing?

Why do we have to give names to BAD weather events? That just encourages them.

We should instead give names to pretty weather events.

WEATHER CENTER ANNOUNCER: "High-pressure system Dan is expected to stay centered over the metro region for the next couple of days, bringing spring-like temperatures, no rain and gentle Southern breezes. Enjoy it while it lasts, folks."

70 degrees and sunny here in N. Florida.  It's going to be a beautiful weekend.  We might have a Fark tab but the weather where I live is fantastic.  4 seasons and never too cold.  If I want snow I just drive north for a few hours.  If I want the beach I just drive south for an hour.  Haters gonna hate.

Fortunately, this storm demonstrates a lack of three-dimensional thinking. We can hide below it.

Maybe pick a new naming scheme if you're going to get halfway through the alphabet 3/4 of the way through winter

Extra hurricanes get Greek letters. Extra winter storms can have Arabic or Hebrew letters.

The Weather Channel is claiming that people will take winter storms more seriously if they are named.

I think the NWS is concerned people will stop taking the real named storms (i.e. hurricanes) seriously, due to a "boy who cried wolf" effect.

Was going to say that they misspelled 'Gandalf' but then googled 'Gandolf' and saw that many other people had beat me to it and that the weather service actually clarified that 'Gandolf' is from something entirely unrelated to LOTR.

It's very cold in winter.

The Weather Channel was absorbed by NBC/Universal a few years ago and is now part of Comcast/NBC/Universal.  Naming the winter storms is another way for them to try to pump up their ratings.  Sadly I only tune into their "Local On The 8s" and Ice Pilots episodes that aren't 2 years old.
