Fark It: St. Paul police searched the Bartashevitch home and found ammunition and receipts for two gun purchases. One receipt was for Bill's Gun Shop, dated Jan. 22, 2013. An employee of the gun shop confirmed Bartashevitch sold an AK-47 style gun -- specifically a 7.62X54R -- for $150.

Mosin-Nagants are now AK-47 style guns. They have wood and originated in Russia!

THANK YOU

JustGetItRight: I absolutely adore how the headline screams Dad points AK-47 at daughter and yet the story states beyond any doubt at all that the weapon was not an AK-47.

One of the rifles was likely a Mosin-Nagant* but the other was very much an AK-47 type of rifle.

Also, if you look at the comments after TFA you'll see that the guy sold the guns TO a gun shop.

/* it's possible he sold something like an SVT or Dragunov. I don't see a gun shop paying $150 for a Mosin-Nagant unless it was a wicked rare model

You're welcome.

Yeah, while AK-replicate weapons chambered in 7.62x54R certainly exist it seems unlikely they'd be going for only $150... particularly post Newtown. So, it seems more likely that it's a Mosin-Nagant.

It's getting to the point where I'm going to go out and buy a pitbull, an AK and some bottle rockets. People keep telling me these things are dangerous. I should be dead by the end of next week.

Infernalist: Another fine example of the average American gun owner!

Responsible, upstanding, a paragon of civility and self-control, a pillar of the community and a fine example to the rest of us.

Clearly, however, this single mistake isn't enough to condemn him. I mean, if his daughter had been packing her own heat, he would not likely have drawn his own weapon. An armed family is a polite family.

Go on. Tell me how this is yet another outlier and this schmuch shouldn't be seen as the 'average' gun owner.

I think he is a responsible gun owner. He bought them and took them home, found out that he could not handle the responsibility and sold them back to a gun shop. Zero body count and no need to run to the ER. If the media wasn't looking for stories with the headline of "Durp durp AK bad Durp" we would have never heard of this guy or his family.

/wasn't even an AK

BronyMedic: Amos Quito: You think he's been porking his daughter?

Okay. That made me laugh. Bravo, Sir. Bravo.

In all seriousness, coming from someone who sees a lot of abused kids come through, if that dad is willing to threaten his daughter at gunpoint for something, he's willing and probably in the current act of harming her in some other fashion, physically or emotionally. It's not really a stretch to assume or intervene with an investigation.

/wonder how many "falls" she's had in the last 5 years.

I think you're exactly right.

The fact that he also pushed his wife down to the ground and pointed the gun at her too tells me they've both been subjected to some form of abuse over the years.

Sensationalism should be combated when encountered or we end up with unhinged individuals wiped up into a frenzy. Case in point, the topic of the thread. Convincing the public that it's surrounded by army machine guns is sensationalism though admittedly less so than, say, convincing half the country SARS was going to kill us all.

2013-01-25 05:03:46 PM

The Stealth Hippopotamus: Exactly, it is a stupid argument. As is saying all we need is gun will smaller mags or "less firepower". What does that even mean? Smaller bullets with less powder behind them? We as a country need to take responsibility for the real issue and stop trying to blame inanimate objects. Gun violence over all is down and the only reason we are having these debates 5 times a day is because of mentally ill people getting their hands on weapons (not just guns). There are billions and billions of weapons of every shape and size, why not focus our efforts on the relatively few mentally ill people?

In gun control threads, you are only allowed to talk about wanting to take away guns or wanting to kill Obama with a gun because he is black.

Even if you wanted a rifle, why would you pick the Kalashikov 47? They're fun as hell, but only with the fire select switch enabled. As semi-automatics they're just a really shiatty version of a standard carbine, and there are a hundred better models available in the same calibers that are more accurate and less prone to malfunction.

AK-47s are literally military surplus gear from second-world nations, have some pride and sense and buy American.

If you don't take care of your equipment, it will malfunction. More at 11.

//People that don't occasionally check their brake fluid are a danger to everyone around them, too, doesn't make 1800s style lever brakes the superior solution.

jchic: impaler: Bartashevitch admitted having a physical confrontation with his wife and daughter, and admitted to pointing the gun at both of them. He said the gun was not loaded and that he checked the chamber before pointing it at them.

You know, if we needed to at least pass a licensing exam to get weapon, like we do a car, these guy would know that:
1) A gun is ALWAYS loaded.
2) See # 1
3) Did you see #1 yet? If not, see #1

So.  He grabbed his gun during an argument, and made sure it was not loaded (yes, I know they're all loaded, bear with me) and then pointed it at his wife and daughter?  What exactly was the point he was trying to make?  The whole reason a gun exists is to shoot something so if you make sure that that gun can't shoot, what, exactly, are you trying to convey by pointing an unloaded gun at someone?  If you get one more B I'll load this gun and then shoot you?

The point he was trying to make is that he's one of the majority of male legal gun owners who end up shooting up their own families. Also, he has a mental illness and needs to have his toys taken away.

Here's the other gun he bought:

Again...looks like an AK-47.

Article doesn't say which gun he was brandishing. Based on the fact that the daughter said it was an AK-47, I'm going with the Zastava.

If his dad had taught him gun safety rules, then he would know your #1 and ten or twelve other important rules. That would include "never point a gun at anything you are not willing to shoot" and my favorite: if you do point a gun at someone, that person is entitled to assume you mean to kill and act in self defense. Meaning that even IF your gun is truly unloaded, someone still might die.

Up until this current "scare" and knee jerk reactionary bullshiat you could buy an AK47 for under $200. I picked one up on gunbroker.com for $300 a few years ago and it came with 3 additional clips.
