Asian REDNECK dad. It's the only explanation.

CrscntBufS: This is why background checks aren't as effective as they could be. People change and sometimes for the worse.

Right, but we should still have them for all firearms purchases. I'd wager until it became news, most Americans probably assumed all firearms required a background check.

It's a minor inconvenience that while not perfect, is something that should have been done a long time ago.

The Slush: Gilligann: I think we're missing something from this story.

St. Paul police learned of the Jan. 13 incident after Bartashevitch's daughter sent a text message to a Central High School classmate, saying her father pointed an AK-47 at her

St. Paul police searched the Bartashevitch home and found ammunition and receipts for two gun purchases. One receipt was for Bill's Gun Shop, dated Jan. 22, 2013. An employee of the gun shop confirmed Bartashevitch sold an AK-47 style gun -- specifically a 7.62X54R -- for $150.

The other receipt was for Frontiersman Sport, Inc., also dated Jan. 22, 2013. The gun shop confirmed Bartashevitch sold a newer AK-47 clone rifle -- a Cal-Zastava PAP 70 7.62X39 -- for $375.

He sold the guns after the incident

It takes rare insight to realize that you're a dumbass. Good on him.

david_gaithersburg: Cupajo: david_gaithersburg: Under existing gun laws you can be sure that this guy will loose his right to own guns. So why punish the rest of society that has done nothing wrong?

Yes, he will lose his right to own guns, but he will still be able to easily buy them because the NRA has spent so much money and time making it difficult (or impossible) for police to enforce "existing gun laws".

.
By the NRA you mean We The People. btw - The NRA gained 250,000 new members in just the past two weeks. I'll be joining them this weekend.

Nice deflection. Why do you hate existing gun laws that make it harder for bad people to buy guns? I thought you were all about "WHAA WHAA Don't Punish Me for Bad People!" Dude, you're making it harder on yourself by supporting the NRA.

The only important part of this article is the casual reference to application of "terroristic" charges to a regular citizen where regular assault and domestic charges would have covered it. the slippery slope my ass, this is wet and wild versicle missile drop slide ride now . also, terroristic is not even a word in FF spell check. must not have fascist regime dictionary plug in yet...

I believe this what us "gun nuts" warned about:

Step 1: Have a discussion about "reasonable" gun control measures.

Step 2: Billy Bob who doesn't have $1200 to spend on an AR15 and wasn't really planning on getting one, runs out after selling his second car and buys one.

Step 3: (around 2014) Billy Bob sells his AR15 for an eightball and $200 in cash.

Step 4: Latin Disciples uses the AR15 in question to kill 7 in a driveby shooting.

Even discussing an assault weapons ban was supremely stupid. What Obama should have done is firmly said there are no plans for a ban, waited a few months, and then decided what to do. About a gazillion people who were never in the market for a semiautomatic weapon now have one at home, thanks to the wonderful "national conversation" that we're having.

I thought that too, but it looks like he sold them after that. Which doesn't make any sense if you think he bought them because of Obama's proposition. It's just the usual derpers trying to bend this story to help their political agenda. As a matter of fact, the whole damn story doesn't make sense unless you put it in a derp agenda format.

2013-01-25 04:39:32 PM

jchic: So. He grabbed his gun during an argument, and made sure it was not loaded (yes, I know they're all loaded, bear with me) and then pointed it at his wife and daughter? What exactly was the point he was trying to make? The whole reason a gun exists is to shoot something so if you make sure that that gun can't shoot, what, exactly, are you trying to convey by pointing an unloaded gun at someone? If you get one more B I'll load this gun and then shoot you?

The magic gun fairy will put ammo in your chamber whenever you're not looking. If you can't look inside the chamber to see it's empty, you better assume it's loaded.

Everyone else, however, being further away from the gun than you, can't reasonably see that the gun is unloaded. So they're going to assume it's loaded. If you pointed it at them, they will have a completely rational reason to believe that you are pointing a loaded weapon at them and intend to destroy them with it. Why not? You just broke Rule 3. Why wouldn't they think you're the kind of idiot that would break Rule 1 as well.

And for this reason, this ardent Second Amendment supporter says that this dude doesn't get to have guns any more. Why? Because if you point a gun at someone for a reason that doesn't meet your state's use of force laws, if you're not in immediate fear of death or bodily harm, you're breaking a felony kinda law.

See, I'm willing to believe that every gun-owning Farker is a paragon of responsibility and gun safety, but I simply can't be convinced that all of the people who legally own guns are likewise responsible and safe.

People have a tendency to do very irrational things when they are angry and/or frightened.

I don't care how responsible you are, and how many times you've given lectures on gun safety. Some people will just have a flip switched and suddenly they are doing something stupid like brandishing their gun. In fact, I feel that owning a gun makes it more likely that any anger or fright scenario will escalate to brandishing, and possibly using, that gun.

Another fine example of the average American gun owner!

Responsible, upstanding, a paragon of civility and self-control, a pillar of the community and a fine example to the rest of us.

Clearly, however, this single mistake isn't enough to condemn him. I mean, if his daughter had been packing her own heat, he would not likely have drawn his own weapon. An armed family is a polite family.

Go on. Tell me how this is yet another outlier and this schmuch shouldn't be seen as the 'average' gun owner.

I absolutely adore how the headline screams Dad points AK-47 at daughter and yet the story states beyond any doubt at all that the weapon was not an AK-47.

Alright all you lefty gun haters. Ive decided rather than jump through all the govnmt hoops to get real Colt M-4 I'm going to buy an airsoft replica that is made of metal, I'm just a collector after all so it doesn't have to actually fire bullets. While I'm there I'm going to measure the full-sized M-60 airsoft replica to see if my M-14 barrel and receiver will fit into it. A functional semi-auto M-60, that would be cool.
