Could it be that these few individuals may have a personal interest in ensuring the existence of the Federal Reserve?

Could it be that these individuals are willing to sell out the rest of us for an unfathomable amount of money?

Could it be that your government doesn't give two shiats about you?

Nadie_AZ: Virginia takes pride in having its own culture and history, its own unique way of doing business.

Uh .... okay.

But does the commonwealth also need its own money?

Maybe so, says Del. Robert Marshall (R-Prince William), who is pushing a bill in the General Assembly that would mandate a study of whether the state "should adopt an alternate medium of commerce or currency to serve as an alternative to the currency distributed by the Federal Reserve System in the event of a major breakdown of the Federal Reserve System."

This. Is. Bullsh*t. It is a way to funnel money to some friends or business associates.

I hope the taxpayers of Virginia are happy with the way their representatives are wasting spending their tax dollars.

I agree that someone in state government suggesting this is exponentially more dangerous. It's a really bad idea to undermine the value of federal currency, and even worse if a state government is doing it. I also agree that occupy groups were a bunch of inconsequential nutjobs that no one cared about. It's just interesting how the ideas on the two polar fringes often seem to wrap around and meet on the other side.

many states have taken similiar measures to protect against economic problems. for example, several states have set up emergency barter systems. this reduces the dependence on banking and also reduces the need to prop up dieing banks during a crisis so naturally the financial industry opposed them.

3) Military industry votes from Norfolk

There's an easy fix to the economy. Allow the government to give money to the poor.

The truth is that spending tax money on entitlements doesn't cost us anything, it just redistributes the money to where it does the most good. Somewhat counter-intuitively it pays off for everyone rich and poor in the end, and the rich benefit disproportionately from the healthy, stimulated economy.

Conservatives can't see this, mostly because they seem to have a very mistaken notion about "government spending," as though when the government spends money, that money is forever lost, like it was thrown in a hole or something. Actually, given the neo-con penchant for "winning" wars by just giving obscene amounts of US tax dollars to desert warlords in exchange for peace -- essentially dumping money in a hole -- I guess this shouldn't be too surprising.

What I find fascinating is that most people would oppose just giving money away to the undeserving, even if it was crystal clear that the end result would be prosperity for all. If you were a wall-street broker, would you spend a million of your hard-earned dollars on the poor if you knew that you could leverage that into 100's of millions of dollars in stock equity? Conversely, would you hold back spending a few dollars, if that meant a stagnant economy and a huge loss in investor confidence? A rising tide lifts all boats.

Of course I'm not proposing a huge increase in entitlement spending, just pointing out that it would almost certainly achieve the desired result in record time.

The truth is that Conservatives are running scared. When all you can see is the past, it's hard to see how to move forward. Sure, we get it, the system is broken. That doesn't mean it's unfixable, just because some old dude can't see the solution.

At the end of the Bush administration, the US economy was on the brink of a steep precipice. If the government hadn't stepped in and propped up the banks and insurance companies the US economy could well have completely collapsed. If you can't see how far we've come from that point, then there's no arguing with you, as you lack any objectivity and credibility.

I guess it's different when Citi bank needs billions to survive, that's OK. It's when you give a poor person a free meal that you ruin this once great nation.
