They still can't be as bad as the Maple Leafs. The Leafs just gave up 7 goals in a game...to the New York Islanders???

The Caps right now have sole possession of last place in the eastern conference, being the only team in the east without a win. They are also the only team in the league with zero points in the standings, as all other teams without a win have at least had the decency to lose one in overtime. They have the worst goal differential in the eastern conference (-8) and are tied with the Columbus Blue Jackets for the worst differential in the league. They have allowed 14 goals in their first three games; all teams that have allowed that many goals or more have already played four games.

It may be a shortened season, but it's looking like a long one in Washington.

Sigh. I'm not a Caps fan in general, but Holtby was highly entertaining in the playoffs and I became a fan. Too bad his season is going so badly.

How about those Blackhawks? Every player on every line is playing top-notch.

Hossa is a beast. Let that be a lesson to all of you who say concussions are bad and will knock your playing ability down a few notches. He drinks Crosby's tears for breakfast.

A shortened season in any sport is going to lead to some anomalies. Players may be out of shape. If a team can play themselves into shape and into the top 8 anything can happen in the playoffs.

But Hossa is a Euro so he's automatically a pussy compared to the good old Canadian boys like Crosby.

The Blues-Blackhawks rivalry is dangerously close to becoming relevant again.

The Blues-Wings rivalry looks like the scales might finally be tipping the other direction.

Well, the Kings look like they're in January 2012 form. They are playing terrible right now, worse than some pre-season games in past years (which is what these games really are). Still no excuse since all teams are in the same boat but this type of sloppy hockey is not going to bring fans back to the sport (unless you were already a huge fan).

A ridiculously wild game in Edmonton against the Kings, and the greenlight goes to Ovie and crew being underwhelming yet again.

Well, with some of the stars already skipping optional skates after they have yet to notch a win, it looks like he has his work cut out.  And the locker room talk is already getting pointed.

They've played one good period this season, last night's 1st.  Something is not clicking.

I think Hossa benefited from the lockout taking so long. It let him take his time recovering from that concussion and build up his conditioning to where he's been great during the 1st week (which is great for my fantasy team but not for my NHL team since he got 2 goals on us Sunday). Under normal circumstances, there would've been pressure on him (either from the team or from himself) to get better ASAP and there would've been a chance that he wouldn't have been 100% in October. Instead, he's in great shape and I'd argue that he has been the best player in the NHL so far.

Yeah, wake me up at the end of maybe February and we'll talk if the Capitals are still completely incapable of playing anything that resembles defense.

I wanted to make a joke about the lockout, I'm a Caps fan, and if you want your shiatty team's performance greened, go find a link. I wasn't expecting it to be greened - I barely made a joke.

Caught the end of that one. Great job to the Oilers on getting over the waved-off goal and getting the win. If it was a full season, I'd say that team has a strong chance of going to the playoffs. The short season just makes it hard to predict what will happen to anybody.

It's going to be an interesting season with the abbreviated schedule that's for sure... Still really early in the season, at any rate. A lot of teams are going to need some time to knock the dust off.

I'm pretty happy the Bruins had so many players getting game time in Europe, though. Still pretty sloppy in general, but they look good so far.

2013-01-25 02:32:11 PM
Shootouts piss me off even more now in the shortened season.

Why?

It will of course be a log jam between about 6th and 10th places in both conferences and with regulation wins used as tie breakers, shootout wins are basically worthless.

The only D-man he could replace is McQuaid, I'm generally happy with the D this year. It's good to see Hamilton playing well early.

Indeed... Kid's got some chops and the old guard of Chara/Siedenberg/Boychuk/McQuaid/Ference seem to be picking up where they left off.

I'd like to see them tighten up a bit with passing and puck control, but I think that'll come as the season goes on.

2013-01-25 02:44:19 PM
After the first two Blue Jackets games I was feeling optimistic they could be mediocre and win 20 games. After the last two games I'm not confident they will win 5.

Their offensive is just pathetic. They have no sustained pressure so the puck is always in their own end, on topof ttheir numerous neutral ice turnovers.

Hopefully John Davidson has some plans to find a playmaker or two for next year

/please buy out Umberger

I picked up Hamilton in my fantasy league on waivers for $5, it's a keeper league and the commish is already offering me trade proposals for him.

It is if you watched any one of the games (or all three, like I did, including going to the home opener).  This year's Caps are bad.  Not good.  They cannot:  1.  skate.  2.  pass.  3.  shoot.  4.  goal tend. 5.  stay out of their own way.  6.  penalty kill.  6.  score on the power play.  7.  demonstrate hustle (Matt Hendricks excluded).  8.  demonstrate any degree of emotion.

They are a leaderless, soulless team who show how much they don't care for 60 minutes each game.  And I'm saying all of this as a life-long Caps fan who is part of a season ticket group.

In short:  they stink.

The new system doesn't explain being lazy or disinterested.  The Caps have been lazy and disinterested.  Watch tonight if you can, I'm afraid you'll see what I mean.

Same thing with Andy McDonald on the Blues - the long layoff let him get his head straight. And yeah, that CHI-STL rivalry is looking potent. Too bad the Blues came out so sloppy playing back to back. The Oshie-Backes-Perron line needs to get their shiat together, you can tell none of them played during the lockout, but man, that McDonald-Steen-Tarasenko line has been downright filthy. Who the hell knew Alexander Steen could be a second line center? I didn't see that one coming in the offseason, but dropping Berglund to the third line makes sense, since he's a better defensive center right now.

Like I said, too early in the season to overthink this for any team. Right now everyone in Ottawa is creaming their pants about how awesome the Sens are. 3-0 looks like a great start, then you realize they've played Florida twice and the condensed schedule doesn't start for them until tonight. Get back to me in a month and then we'll have a better idea of how good/bad the teams really are.

2013-01-25 03:45:47 PM
What is the deal with Subban? Any Canadiens' fans aware of why they won't pay him the money? Are they afraid of another Scott Gomez deal? He's currently one of their best and definitely the most dynamic defenseman.

Pay him for three years at $4 a year. Then they can see if he knocks off the stupid crap and develops into the leader he should be. After that the GM should be able to see a good way into the future as far as the salary cap and team dynamics are concerned. The longer this drags out, the more likely it will be that another GM sends an offer-sheet for him
