not a knock on the fans, but most people can't love a game simply because of its art style.

Studio Ghibli.
They make some of the best animated movies from Japan for the last 20 or so years, and helped set the "Japanese" look. Some of their movies include "My neighbor Toronto," "Spirited Away," "Nazacca"

My brother went to see the Nazca lines. He said it is a myth that they can only be seen from the air. You can see them from nearby hilltops too. They are "best viewed" from the air.

It's a fantastic looking game, but sadly, i'll have to wait to buy it. February will be an expensive month, and I already have too many games in the backlog.

Sucks that so many people got screwed over by the wizard edition oversell. That really hurt the games image.

I've seen these two. I liked Spirited Away, and Totoro was... I guess enjoyable. I don't know. There's nothing wrong with the Japanese stuff. I can't peg out exactly what I dislike about it, but it just takes extra effort for it to click with me. Usually cutesy sprites and demons are a turn off for me.

FF didn't know what to do with itself when it made the jump to 3D. Keep the super deformed look? Go for realism? The did both with 7, went for real (as you could be then) with 8, and then back to deformed with 9. And then it all went downhill and now they just put the exact same face on top of a Tetsuya Nomura costume.

This game is beautiful. This is what Nintendo should have been aiming for with Wind Waker graphics if they were trying to capture childish whimsy and wonder. This looks head and shoulders above what Nintendo released of the WW remake.

Early 3d games looked terrible, honestly. Luckily things improved pretty quickly in that regard.

The problem with polygons IMO is that they look worse than sprites when they're in low resolution and low poly count. Which is exactly what you had during the PS1/N64 days, but of course it paved the way for what we have now. But I feel that's why you can go back and play a 2d sprite game and still feel like it's aged well and looks good, but early polygon games can be harsh on eyes used to seeing modern 3d games.

Fully agreed, that is a stunning implementation. I can understand it eliciting nothing more than 'meh' from people who aren't already interested in / enchanted by Studio Ghibli, but as someone who is, that is just beautiful.

However, I'm not interested in 'cute' games, I prefer darker stories and environments. So how do we get them to produce a Grave of the Fireflies RPG?

Though I do like The Walking Dead (comics, TV series, game, in that order), I can't say I respect it that much; it's fun but not deep. To me, it doesn't really approach the "tear your heart out of your chest and beat your soul to death with it" beauty that is Grave of the Fireflies.

Even imagining the latter as a game has me wanting a beer and watching the Elder Scrolls Online trailer over and over again to keep my spirits up.

My understanding was that the characters faces were drawn in a deliberately generic fashion so as to allow the reader/viewer to more easily identify with them.

Level 5 continues to cement themselves as one of the best RPG developers of the past ten years, between this and Crimson Shroud they've had a really strong last two months.

On console style/JRPGs in general, they're one of the few major studios that really takes innovation in the genre/meta-genres seriously. They aren't quite the cheap and unstoppable machine that is Atlus' SMT teams, but they're doing some great work.

Dark Cloud 3 kind of already exists, and is called Rogue Galaxy. Unfortunately they stripped out all the simulation elements and Georama, but the core mechanics are a beautiful refinement of the action RPG, and pretty the action-squad-turned based RPG FFXII wanted to be. Unfortunately, the story is quite possibly the worst on the console.

Scrooge McDuck.

Carl Barks was the most prolific writer and artist for the Disney Duck comics. He's responsible for four out of five entries on this list, and is therefore unarguably the father of the entire modern world. But possibly Bark's greatest contribution was the influence of Scrooge McDuck on one Osamu Tezuka. Don't recognize the name? Well, Tezuka has a few nicknames, like "The Father of Manga," or "The Godfather of Anime." If you've still got a blank stare on your face, then we'll just tell you he's the guy responsible for this:

I was really surprised Kotaku didn't take the bait on that one. Maybe someone should have posted it on Reddit/r/gaming.  Then they would have gobbled it whole.

I've had the PSOne, PS2 and now PS3 and my hands are only comfortable with that controller. I find the xbox controller to be bulky.

The nunchuck/wii remote is actually the best. You can relax your arms, and the joystick's lighter.

THANK YOU.

I thought I was the only one. So few appreciate the ability to have shoulder freedom.

I don't always like the motion stuff but separate hands is gold.

AGREED! Going from a PS2, then to a Wii, then to a PS3...it really felt like I was going backwards controller interfaces. Not so much some of the wacky motion stuff, but just that my arms could be placed naturally along the sides of my body instead of tighly spaced on my lap.

Are there plans to release it for the 3DS in NA?

There's actually an anime called NAZCA and yes, it involves the Nazca lines.

also, play the SNES Action/RPG Illusion of Gaia, it involves the Nazca lines too and it's pretty much a Ghibli movie in game form.

If you liked that, I highly reccomend Terranigma, the third game in the (VERY LOOSE) trilogy (Soul Blazer-> Illusion of Gaia-> Terranigma)

You'll likely have to use a ROM, though: It came out in Europe, but not the US. REALLY good game.

I'm waiting to pick this game up. I've been impressed with level 5 in the past, and the style of this game alone should be worth it. I just wish they would get a little better with storylines. I think the only other rpg style game I am anticipating more is the next Tales import (xillia)

As is, I just finally played MGS4.... damn that was a rewarding game, and makes me want to play through as much as I can to refresh the story arc since it looks like phantom pain is going to be MGS5. So much better than Assassins creed series.

I pre-ordered mine from Best Buy. Went in on release date, and they didn't have it. Told me to come back Thursday, which I did, and they didn't have it again. Went in today, and they still didn't have it yet. I canceled my pre-order and went to my local Gamestop, which had at least 5 copies available still.

I would get this for the novelty of playing a Miyazaki animation, but I don't expect that it's going to be that great of a game overall. My past experience with games based on this just won't let me get that excited about it.

My only complaint about MGS4 was that it took the already-annoying tendency of the Japanese to make expository dialogue extremely repetitive and cranked it up to 11. I swear there were some cut scenes that could have been reduced from 20 minutes to 2 without losing any information, and they would have been easier to follow since they wouldn't put you into a hypnotic daze half way through.

Never has so little been said by so many words.

It had a metal gear fight. That alone makes it my favorite boss battle in the series. Granted, MGS3 was the better overall game.

Oh, that fight was awesome. REX biting and clawing the ray was so fun I kept doing that attack over and over and over.

Yeah, it was long-winded, but I expect that from Kojima anymore. There was a lot of closure in the game however, which was nice. Too many franchises never get around to half of what they did in mgs4.

Had not heard of this game before now. Promptly ordered it.
Pretty much own everything Ghibli /Miyazaki I can get my hands on so promptly ordered this. Only problem is I'll probably be forced to play it only when my significant other is around cause she dig the Ghibli/Miyazaki stuff too but wouldn't have the patience to play the game herself.

Curious if the USA version has a "Japanese voice w/ subtitles" option, though the english voice acting in the game previews seems like it was pretty decent. The typical soft spoken style that most of the english Ghibli films have.

Thier works all feel like excellent modern takes of fairy tails. Albeit the giant malleable raccoon (tanuki) testicles was a bit scar inducing.

Yup it's dual audio. I haven't started playing it yet, but from what I've read the lips are synced to the Japanese dialog, although it's not supposed to be too noticeable when using English.

Maybe I'm a closet racist or something, but I've never found Japanese voice in anime particularly appealing as voice work. Sure some of the English stuff is pretty bad, but generally the Japanese voice acting is so ridiculously over the top with screaming and other shenanigans that its hardly an improvement considering I don't speak the language.

I'm not a huge anime buff or anything, so maybe I just haven't seen the worst of the worst, but it seems almost all my friends who enjoy anime refuse to watch anything dubbed.

Meh that doesn't make you a racist. It just comes down to personal preference. There are horrible voice actors in every language, some tend to get more work than others though.
I personally enjoy the phonology of Japanese and can understand around 95% of what I hear, so it just comes down to what I feel like listening to at the moment. /shrug

I initially chose Xbox360 over the ps3, and only in the last year picked up a ps3 because my older brother chose it as his reintroduction to console gaming. I still kick myself for not choosing a ps3 earlier. Despite the flubs with user profile data, I will likely hold onto the ps3 longer than the Xbox now. They don't require a subscription to play online with friends, and the subscription service they do have is pretty nice right now. I am playing a lot of games I missed because of either platform exclusivity or not willing to invest in them initially for free* (subscription cost of $50/year) for as long as I have a subscription. Even at used copy prices it has more than paid for itself, as they release 1 major title per month free, then up to two lesser full length titles, and then a smattering of arcade style games.

Games I've played free:
Resident evil 5 deluxe edition
Just cause 2
Saints row 2
Infamous 2
Darksiders
War hammer 40k
etc. etc. I think batman arkham city is up soon, even if I did play it on Xbox already I will get download it.

I tend to side with your friends, although I've not been a big anime fans in recent years either.

I was a teen back in the 70's and remember so many anime series that were just raped by english dubbing companies. Everything dumbed down to a ten year olds understanding level, and I just hated that crap. I know there are talented english voice actors in the field, but I just can't seem to shake that old prejudice.

Actually, that's part of the reason I stick with it for anything that's not a Ghibli-hey-we-got-Patrick-Stewart movie, because even IF the Japanese is overblown, it doesn't trigger mental rage the way poor English does for me. There are some high-pitched voices that can get to me regardless, but they're few and far between these days. I'll take a "probably overdone but I can't tell what's being said and I have no idea how things are usually intoned or flow conversationally" over "90% poorly or boringly acted, directed, and edited." No to mention there are then dialogue modifications to fit mouth movements. (Admittedly also something that's gotten to be less of an issue over the years.)

Special exemption to dubs so horrible and so far gone (like the ancient Golden Boy OVAs) that they become MST3K-like hilarity. ;-)

I can see that. If it is in a language you don't understand with different intonations you can't tell bad voice acting even if it's there.

Dubbing has improved dramatically over the years. There's still some pretty awful efforts though -- especially in the video game industry.

I can understand watching subtitles if the dub is just ear-bleeding painful or if it has lost a lot through the translation process. Otherwise, I find many watch subs as a form of elitism.

Hitomi Tanaka's Paperweights: However, I'm not interested in 'cute' games, I prefer darker stories and environments. So how do we get them to produce a Grave of the Fireflies RPG?

Not-really spoilers:

We've been marveling at the balance in Ni No Kuni: it's adorable, but it does have some very serious, darker, moments. The game begins after the main character's mother dies - and it's hard to see her death as not being his fault. There's also been a subplot that hints at spousal abuse. We're not even that far in.

I keep joking that the whole game is an elaborate inner fantasy world constructed by a depressed child, but I'll be angry if that's actually the case.
