So it's like playing 1980's imported cartoons? How is the game play? Is it available on PC?

Ehh, I'd get it if it weren't on PS3. Those uncomfortable controllers are murder for RPGs.

Visually speaking, looks like something that Studio Ghibli could do... I like it.

Should check it out...

I've had the PSOne, PS2 and now PS3 and my hands are only comfortable with that controller. I find the xbox controller to be bulky.

Are there plans to release it for the 3DS in NA?

The only reference to a DS version I saw was a Japan Only release a few years ago.

Aaah... No, actually didn't knew that Ghibli got involved on this, but seeing the visual style, it's pretty obvious...

Guess more reason to check this game out!

Long story short, Osamu Tezuka, considered father of the manga, drew heavy influence from Disney cartoons and started to draw with big expressive, eyes, and established the trend.

Same here. I've never had any problems with the PS3 controller. I guess all those years with the NES and SNES controllers got me used to the shape and feel of it.

Have you ever talked with an Okami fan? I'm assuming its similar.

not a knock on the fans, but most people can't love a game simply because of its art style.

Studio Ghibli.
They make some of the best animated movies from Japan for the last 20 or so years, and helped set the "Japanese" look. Some of their movies include "My neighbor Toronto," "Spirited Away," "Nazacca"

Don't forget Grave of Fireflies. The classic movie that everyone should see exactly once.

Now i want to see a Studio Ghibli film about the Nazca lines of Peru. I mean there is definitely something there - especially as they can "only be seen from the air" and Miyazaki has a thing for sky-vessels (given what is father did, it is not a surprise).

My brother went to see the Nazca lines. He said it is a myth that they can only be seen from the air. You can see them from nearby hilltops too. They are "best viewed" from the air.

It's a fantastic looking game, but sadly, i'll have to wait to buy it. February will be an expensive month, and I already have too many games in the backlog.

Sucks that so many people got screwed over by the wizard edition oversell. That really hurt the games image.

I've seen these two. I liked Spirited Away, and Totoro was... I guess enjoyable. I don't know. There's nothing wrong with the Japanese stuff. I can't peg out exactly what I dislike about it, but it just takes extra effort for it to click with me. Usually cutesy sprites and demons are a turn off for me.

It's a PS3 exclusive (article blocked at work)? D'oh. i love games with cel shading or sprites.

FF didn't know what to do with itself when it made the jump to 3D. Keep the super deformed look? Go for realism? The did both with 7, went for real (as you could be then) with 8, and then back to deformed with 9. And then it all went downhill and now they just put the exact same face on top of a Tetsuya Nomura costume.

This game is beautiful. This is what Nintendo should have been aiming for with Wind Waker graphics if they were trying to capture childish whimsy and wonder. This looks head and shoulders above what Nintendo released of the WW remake.

Early 3d games looked terrible, honestly. Luckily things improved pretty quickly in that regard.

The problem with polygons IMO is that they look worse than sprites when they're in low resolution and low poly count. Which is exactly what you had during the PS1/N64 days, but of course it paved the way for what we have now. But I feel that's why you can go back and play a 2d sprite game and still feel like it's aged well and looks good, but early polygon games can be harsh on eyes used to seeing modern 3d games.

I pretty much gave up on FF after the characters became this...

As a 30 something I can play a cartoon stylized game without feeling a sense of feeling "too old for this shiat", but once I detect even sniff of that teen angsty/emo vibe I'm out.

Fully agreed, that is a stunning implementation. I can understand it eliciting nothing more than 'meh' from people who aren't already interested in / enchanted by Studio Ghibli, but as someone who is, that is just beautiful.

However, I'm not interested in 'cute' games, I prefer darker stories and environments. So how do we get them to produce a Grave of the Fireflies RPG?

Play the Walking Dead iOS game.

Most of the decisions in that game come down to "who would you like to see suffer this time?"

Though I do like The Walking Dead (comics, TV series, game, in that order), I can't say I respect it that much; it's fun but not deep. To me, it doesn't really approach the "tear your heart out of your chest and beat your soul to death with it" beauty that is Grave of the Fireflies.

Even imagining the latter as a game has me wanting a beer and watching the Elder Scrolls Online trailer over and over again to keep my spirits up.

Oh, come on. That trailer was as generic as you can get. It could have been for a new Guild Wars, Warcraft, or Everquest expansion. I'm stoked as hell about the game, but thought the trailer was boring.

My understanding was that the characters faces were drawn in a deliberately generic fashion so as to allow the reader/viewer to more easily identify with them.

Could be wrong though. Been a while since I read "Understanding Comics".

Ya, I wasn't trying to pick on FF or early polygon 3D games, just that I prefer the earlier art style. It is probably 99% nostalgia, but that's just me. I would rather play Shining Force or Dragon Warrior over anything out right now. Just something about them that I enjoy more than other games.
