Dearest Anabeth:

It was with great trepidation that opened the Commentary section on FARK.com. Being a man of reason and science, I had hoped that the bulwarks of logic and higher learning would shield my psyche from whatever might await.

I was wrong.

All light of civilized thought was overthrown in an onslaught of horrors unimaginable. Irrational Jpegs flitted in and out of vision, encircled with in-jokes and memes that remained stubbornly unfathomable to my perceptions. The intention of comments could not be trusted as grinning and leering faces laughed and japed at those caught in their subtle deceptions.

I managed to hit the 'Back' button, but I fear that I was too late to preserve my faculties of thought. When the lamp goes out, they will come.

I can hear them now.....

FTFA: "in mountains about 680 kilometers (420 miles) north of the South Pole"

Well that really narrows it down now, doesn't it?

At the Amundsen-Scott south pole research station, a skeleton crew winters over to maintain the place. When everyone leaves at the end of summer they kick it off by watching a double feature of The Shining and The Thing.

All that's missing is "THEY'RE COMING THROUGH THE DOOR NOW THE TENTACLES AGLAGLAGTHALUGHACK"

Seriously, who writes "AGLAGLAGTHALUGHACK" as the tentacles are dragging them away?  I know at least one HPL story where this is how it actually ends.

snake_beater: TheSelphie: Is this a D2 reference or is this something slightly less obscure than that that I somehow don't know about? Because it doesn't really fit The Thing, but by god, this is literally the beginning of the plot in D2.

HP Lovecraft. That is all.

I would not be surprised at all if D2 ripped off Lovecraft wholesale.
