because that is probably the only 2 minutes of new material that robin williams has?

/as a very infrequent viewer of kimmel, it was funny to see how far the matt damon feud has apparently escalated

I'm huge into stand up comedians and listen to Pandora comedy channel whenever I can.
I used to love Robin Williams now when he comes on, his shtick seems as dated as Dice Clay.

Wow... that was really lame. Might be due to the fact I'm beginning to hate smart phones...

Case in point: Robin Williams Live at the Met is the funniest thing he has ever done.

This doesn't count as a repeat, I know.

Still, seems like the Kimmel topic RIGHT BELOW THIS ONE should cover the whole bit.

I never had any interest in Robbin William. Always hated that coked-up, fake gay routine. But a few years ago I was at a charity event that he agreed to host. He showed up on time, they handed him his lines on notecards and he walked out on stage with zero preparation. He never hid the fact that he was standing there with the cards in his hand, took long pauses to read and rearrange them and he killed on every line. It was an unbelievable display of a master at his craft.

because he isn't funny

2013-01-25 12:22:53 PM
Because he sucks?

I dunno, maybe my funny bone is broken. But the last big standup special he did (early-ish two-thousands? Too lazy to open another window and Google it) seemed, well, awful. Manic flop sweat, slipping into and out of different voices for no reason, etc.

Somehow, Robin "White Knight to Armstrong" Williams still lives, yet Mitch Hedburg dies. Where do I get that Farnsworth "Don't wanna live on this planet anymore" image from?

/Oh yeah, Google.
//GOOGLE!

To paraphrase the drug lines of the 70's, "Preparation & Talent will get you through times of No Material better than Good Material will get you through No Preparation or No Talent."

This reminds me of the feud between Jack Benny and Fred Allen. Went on for decades, but in reality they were amazing friends.

2013-01-25 12:37:41 PM
He wasn't that funny, but its like his delivery... People are laughing because his delivery is so confident, the audience is tricked into thinking that they should be laughing... I think his stuff from the 80's is actually non-sensical, but again, he had that delivery going for him.

I like the guy... i just wish he'd reprise a Popeye sequel.

That was the weakest clip of the show that I've seen so far. He's outlived his usefulness

Don't get the Robin Williams hate, but I guess you're supposed to hate everything and everyone that anyone else may have heard of before. At least if you want to be one of the cool kids. I thought the bit was funny and pretty typical of his stuff.

If you're talking about Live on Broadway you can go straight to hell. His origin of golf story is great.

Mitch Hedburg was pretty amazing.

This was sort of okay, I guess.

You can actually just put in any comedian you want and they'll make a station with comedians similar to them. I've had a lot of luck with Louis CK and Patton Oswalt channels.

Wasn't he the Carlos Mencia of the 70s as far as joke stealing? I heard that the Improv had a special light that alerted comedians onstage to the fact that Robin Williams or Jay Leno walked in and they'd then put away their new, "A" material. Or am I just being a gossipy biatch?

the problem isn't just the lack of cocaine...it's that his "emprov" has devolved into the same goddamn MADLIB for every single joke.

Yeah, watching Robin Williams now is kind of like watching Richard Pryor get rolled out on those awards shows right before he died.

Sad, sad, sad

Robin Williams is a guy that I hate watching if he is just left on his own. Oddly enough, if he is working off a script and kept from "being Robin", I like him as an actor. How many times can you reference The Wizard of Oz in one career?

I have the same problem with Jim Carey. Whacky over-the-top is not a good acting style. The directors who want to" turn on the camera and let these guys do their thing" are just being lazy.

Certifiably Jonathan is a mockumentary. Jonathan Winters actually had a psychotic breakdown early in his career. Williams is an alky and druggie (former).

However, both can take things out of the air and be funny. Maybe not YOUR kind of funny, but funny nonetheless.

Williams on Actor's Studio was fabulous. Winters can take a stick and do a whole routine. Again, maybe not your kind of humor. But to say they've both lost it...well, you're very wrong.

Winters COULD take a stick and do an entire routine...past tense.

Fun Fact...people Age...as they age...sometimes they lose a step. Winters and Williams are amongst them.
This in no way detracts from their previous body of work...does mean I'm not going to go out of my way to watch anything "new".

I will always have a soft spot for Robin Williams, though "Weapons of Self-Destruction" was just 'meh'. I did like "Live on Broadway 2002" though, and his inside the actor's studio appearance was great. But yeah, his schtick is feeling tired.

CSB: My Dad and stepmom were vacationing in San Francisco on 9/11. Robin Williams lives there, so he went to a local blood bank to urge people to come donate, probably knowing word of his appearance would bring attention to it. While he was there he gave a 20 minute or so impromptu stand-up performance.

/still love "Popeye"

His part on Louie when they made the stripper cry was comedic gold.

Had to look it up, but Robin Williams did an interview on Now with Tom Brokaw & Katie Couric back in the 90s that was him so just going off. Neither Brokaw or Couric get in a question because one Williams wouldn't let them and two they both were laughing so much.

When Pandora brought in comedy, I started getting the occasional stand-up on my Weird Al channel. So that's a good starter too, if you want funny songs in addition to your stand-up.

I still remember how whenever Rickles was on Carson, they would come back from commercial and Johhny would be all red-faced from laughing at the off-color jokes Rickles was telling during the break.
