My guess prior to reading TFA was "Sean Hannity joining 'Good Morning America' cast".

Why is this making the rounds? This has been common knowledge forever. Since I can remember I've always been told that alcohol doesn't actually help you sleep.

Not that I ever believed it, but still, this isn't a new discovery.

I'm always sober in my dreams.

2013-01-25 10:34:48 AM
The review found that alcohol consumption shortens the time it takes to get to sleep and increases initial deep sleep, but reduces rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Lack of REM sleep can harm concentration, motor skills and memory.

I thought the article was pretty interesting actua..... what is that strange bug crawling over there, and is that a smudge on my monito dinglesappletrumpor ack trample viddlw=e such

maybe it doesn't help you sleep well... but, there are times that I'm pretty sure the booze was the reason i went to sleep.

Old news is...another good reason to drink.

2013-01-25 10:37:42 AM
How many do I really need?

2013-01-25 10:48:57 AM
But what if you don't go to sleep but you just kinda pass out ever night?

/I just want to know, you know, because a friend asked me.

stupiddream: But what if you don't go to sleep but you just kinda pass out ever night?

I passed out for so many consecutive days I should have been exhausted from "not actually sleeping" yet I was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed by 11AM every day.

Yeah whenever I see Fox News, I get the urge to drink.

2013-01-25 10:58:24 AM
Logging onto Fark in the morning is reason enough for me to start drinking.

What about when the urge to drink more makes you not want to sleep at all? Does that make sense? Wondering for a friend.

This.

Poor sleep > no sleep.

however, i have started a new practice on real benders. i try to stay awake a couple of hours with no booze, just water. i've found that this can seriously decrease the next day's hangover

/ does not help the tiredness though, but tiredness can be overcome with coffee and willpower. hangovers cannot.

My slow drip alcohol I.V. night stand doesn't look like a stupid idea now, does it, naysayers?

Same thing applies if you can remember to chug a glass of water for every beer or three, but remembering can be hard.

Nonsense. I get far better sleep when I'm drooling whisky onto my pillow than when I'm tossing and turning all night because everything hurts and my roommates won't shut up.

I'll take what I can get.

The ironic thing about this article is that it basically states that it does help you sleep, it's just not "quality" sleep.

Like 'screwzloos' says; if your option is little to no sleep or sleep aided by alcohol, it's a pretty easy choice.

Doesn't say how much alcohol.  I think 2~3 drinks in the evening but not just before bedtime, helps calm the mind.  6~7+ drinks and pretty much all bodily systems are going to be adversely impacted.  Unless you're so much of a rummy that it takes 6+ drinks to get to 'normal' then you're pretty much f*cked

2013-01-25 01:54:27 PM
Honestly, if something helps you get to sleep, I'm okay with that. Different things work for different people.

When it's specifically designed to keep you asleep no matter what, I worry.

Melatonin is not dangerous, it just doesn't work as a sleep aid - we've known that since the early 90's.

Also, when DID knowledgeable people think a nightcap would help you sleep? You're going to have rebound alertness as that alcohol dissipates overnight.

I can't sleep without booze. I wish I could but it would take a lot of sleepless nights and time to adjust to life without my "sleeping medicine" (Booze) and I don't have that kind of time. I have a demanding and stressful job.

Is it worth it? Also how much do you spend on alcohol each month?

Somewhere around $100/month. And as far as jobs go, I am not going to find anything that pays as well as the one I have.

Cheers!
