2013-01-25 09:51:57 AM
I guess they liked it better that waaaaaay!

2013-01-25 09:52:01 AM
Just let it go - it's nobody's business but the Turks.

2013-01-25 09:52:45 AM
Does it look like Jabba's palace?

2013-01-25 09:54:10 AM
The mosque has access to carbonite? I might have to sign up!

2013-01-25 09:54:25 AM
The mosque that use to be a Christian basilica? That building? LOL, they didnt even build it they just captured it.

/islam, is there anything that does not outrage them?

2013-01-25 09:54:42 AM
How the fark old is that movie anyway? It's been out for at least 30 years, so what's all the butthurt NOW?

And no, it does not look like "one of Turkey's most revered mosques."

/Sorry, please try again later.

2013-01-25 09:54:43 AM
Why are they mad at Lego? George Lucas is the person who designed the original palace. Lego just copied his design.

2013-01-25 09:55:02 AM
so let your imaginary sky wizard claim a jihad against an imaginary intergalactic mobster who lived in an imaginary galaxy at significant though indeterminate period of time in the past.

The reason the mosque looks the way it does it because it's a building in the desert. the reason Jabba's palace looks the way it does is because it's a building in the desert.

2013-01-25 09:55:03 AM

Mugato: So what are they going to do about it?

Fly a plane in to it?

2013-01-25 09:55:13 AM
1) no it doesn't

2) that Mosque was originally a Cathedral, aside from the minarets, the rest is fairly similar to the original design. (the dome has been replaced a few times)

Austria's Turkish community said the model was based on Hagia Sophia mosque in Istanbul

Yeah, I see it too.

"The terrorist Jabba the Hutt likes to smoke a hookah and have his victims killed," said the statement posted on the organisation's website.
"It is clear that the ugly figure of Jabba and the whole scene smacks of racial prejudice and vulgar insinuations against Asians and Orientals as people with deceitful and criminal personalities."

Ok, number one, Jabba is a crime lord, not a terrorist. Everyone has to be a farking terrorist nowadays. And second, did he just call Jabba Asian and/or Oriental?

2013-01-25 09:56:45 AM
OK, that's like the sixth Fark link in two weeks that I've tried to read on my Android phone, and I can't because the farking images increase in size as I'm trying to read it. This causes the text to constantly shift downwards. WTF are these web designers doing?

2013-01-25 09:56:47 AM
Would this not be George Lucas's fault?
The design is from the movie...Desert setting, women in chains, barbaric customs, funny music, heavily armed militia?
Nope no similarity at all.

2013-01-25 09:57:09 AM
Wahhhh.

2013-01-25 09:58:28 AM
Asians and Orientals

I thought Oriental was racist when applied to describe people.

And NO, it doesn't look like it.

HMS_Blinkin: Why are they mad at Lego? George Lucas is the person who designed the original palace. Lego just copied his design.

This. One can argue whether or not the outrage is legitimate, but if it is, Lego is not the appropriate target.

Though this leads to yet another question: Did Lucas himself design the fortress, or was it someone employed by him?

Even Old New York was once New Amsterdam.

Why they changed it I can't say.

People just liked it better that way.

You guys mock this, but imperialistic racism (and sexism) is rampant in the toy industry.

A few years ago (and I'm ashamed to admit this), I worked as a racism/sexism consultant for the major toy companies. I'd be called in to look at a new product line; if it wasn't racist or sexist enough, I'd suggest changes to ensure that a requisite number of people would be outraged, and therefore would refuse to to buy the product in question (thus reducing the number of potential sales, causing the company to make less profit).

That Easy Bake Oven marketed primarily to girls? I'm the soulless sonofabiatch who demanded that it be coloured pink.

Because if there's one thing all manufacturing companies want, it's to give people an excuse *not* to buy their products.

Oh, it has a domed roof so it's the same.

Millennium: One can argue whether or not the outrage is legitimate

The funny thing is that it really isn't legitimate at all. But, we've become so desensitized to nutjob fundies of all stripes getting mad about stuff like this, that we don't even bother to argue with it. The best we can do is hope they point their outrage in the right direction, since there's obviously no getting them to learn when outrage is appropriate.

They didnt even build the damn thing!!! Christains did and they captured it... now let talk about the Armenians turkey

2013-01-25 10:06:22 AM
Hey Look! The new Lego set has a dome just like our famous mosques. We think they copied it so we can call them racist. Even though the Lego set looks nothing like our mosques seeing our mosques has no tower behind it and is actually bigger then the scale size Lego set.

And speaking of said mosques... why aren't they all up in arms last year for the Assassin's Creed Revelations depiction of it? I remember going through the city and climbing that building as well as going inside and solving a puzzle that opens up a crypt.

2013-01-25 10:07:31 AM
Yeah, there's no real resemblance at all between the two.

//the Hagia Sophia is a bloody beautiful building though
//Amazing it's still standing considering its age

To make it break,
It's going to take,
a metal ball hung from a chain.

2013-01-25 10:18:37 AM
As already pointed out, Hagia Sophia was originally a Christian church. But it is NOT in fact a mosque anymore; it is a museum and any form of worship there is prohibited.

So it is none of these muslim fundies goddamned business that this church-turned-mosque-turned-museum vaguely looks like a Lego set, even if it did.

And this, dear Turks, along with backwards idiocy like banning books about evolution, is why the EU won't have you as a member.

2013-01-25 10:20:48 AM
Those turkish muslims should put together a gymnastics team, because that's a hell of a stretch.

2013-01-25 10:22:43 AM
And a bank down the street looks like the Parthenon.

2013-01-25 10:23:56 AM
As long as it isn't LEGO. I like LEGO.

/Lego can go screw themselves, though.

cirby: (Looks at pictures of each)

No - it really doesn't.

What, are you kidding me? They both have domes! Not to mention walls. A dome and walls? How likely is it that it just so happens to have both a dome and walls?

Racism. Nothing but.

2013-01-25 10:24:46 AM
There is nothing, nothing, which some Turks don't find offensive to Turkishness.

Holy Christ, that place is HUGE.

2013-01-25 10:33:32 AM
