Minimum wage jobs are temporary glory is forever!!

They should just do a "Red Dawn" (2012) and digitally edit the ACE logo. Make it "ASS Hardware" or something.

Hahahaha ACE looks like such an ass right now! Instead of waiting to see what people thought, they automatically jumped on the "ANY VIOLENCE IS BAD AND WE WILL TAKE A STAND AGAINST IT, EVEN IF IT'S PURELY FANTASY!"

I think we need a zombie protest at every ACE hardware. Just have a bunch of people dressed up like zombies line up against the windows clawing and moaning at the people inside.

that was not good.

it wasn't amusing. it wasn't enjoyable. it wasn't interesting. it wasn't ambitious. it wasn't original.

that was somebody recording 10 minutes of their Facebook page.

All it takes is one idiot to watch that movie, pick up a rake, and hit his brother on the head while shouting "KILL THE ZOMBIE" before the dumb mother laywers up and sues ACE Hardware for condoning a movie like that being made in one of its stores (it's not like the judge in the case can throw it out for being frivolous - the law's have to be written to make sure no one takes any personal responsibility for anything anymore).

Knowing this, ACE needed to protect its ass from liability and had to fire everyone involved.

Blame the lawyers.

That would be awesome.  If I was ACE, I would have hired the guy to do an online ad, with a general "for all yer zombie killin needs' take.  They're not thinking about the opportunity that this presents.

2013-01-24 06:45:12 PM
and once again a subby can just pull shiat out of their ass to entice a green:

"It also got all of the ACE employees in the film fired"

yet nothing of the sort is evident anywhere in that article.

and as for Jon Hurst, he absolutely deserves to be fired, if not for the filming and broadcast, just for his comments at the end about customers (as true as they may be). you can't insult your customer base and expect to still maintain employment. welcome to the real world.

Ace needs to find out how they can best support this homework-assignment while still maintaining some corporate responsibility.

Hey kids, when you let a camera crew follow you around at work, and they catch you surfing google, goofing off, talking about killing things (even zombies), and just plain being not useful, don't be surprised if that video gets out to the wrong people (your boss) and they re evaluate their need for you.

Yeah I am pretty sure that would be a fireable offense everywhere I've ever worked.

ACE is completely overreacting to this. I love how they are trying to get it "removed from all online sources" and are "aghast and outraged" over it. Their FB statement is so weird, that if I didn't know this was a short film about fighting zombies, I would assume that someone killed puppies in an ACE hardware store and put the video on YouTube, or something.

This will be a lovely negative-PR shiatstorm in the making.

Good luck at the film festivals, you intrepid movie-makers.

/Fark you, ACE Hardware

2013-01-24 07:26:35 PM
Another example of a corporation with zero sense of humor. A better response would just be asking them to add a disclaimer to the beginning (e.g., ACE Hardware has no involvement..... whatever) or just to edit the name in the video to be AAA Hardware or something. Also definitely no need for people to be fired over it.

And of course, due to the Streisand effect this relatively pointless and uninteresting video will get 20 times the views it would have otherwise. Way to be counterproductive, ACE.

Every single time I have dealt with ACE Hardware, it's been a colossal pain in the ass. This just gives me one more reason to not want to do business with them. You're "appalled" and "aghast" that someone would dare use your name for a short like this? How about simply "We didn't give consent and we have to protect our brand"? Screw you, ACE.

The video was crap, but the official ACE response was worse.

Lighten up Francis.

ACE shouldn't have fired them, it should've politely dropped them off at a mental health facility.

Or they jumped onto the "you don't get to use company resources, including the brand name and locations, without permission and/or paying a license fee, and being an employee certainly doesn't entitle you to fark around with the company's property and abuse your key access".

You know, the relatively reasonable stance of basically every company, ever.

If they'd taken the week or so to get approval for this in advance there'd have been no problem whatsoever. It is actually better to ask permission than forgiveness when you're doing something like using someone else's property as a shooting location without permission.

//Firing them and filing a trademark complaint is reasonable, all they have to do is scrub direct references and the movie can go forward. If Ace was to be a dick they could effectively prevent the movie from ever being published instead by working the "misappropriated company property" angle to force them to ditch most of the scenes entirely.

No, a reasonable company would ask a disclaimer be added and be done with it. Firing the employees and scouring the internet is a completely overblown reaction to filming a few people talking in and around a store.

hey i thought the video was funny, which makes me a firebrand or a trailblazer or some other compound word

2013-01-24 08:48:00 PM
Well, that was, different.
The funny thing i found with the video was the complete lack of understanding how infrastructure works after disasters/ zombie apocolypses. He seems to be under the impression that there will be electricity keeping that food cold so he can eat like a king. And, he also lacks basic understanding about what autozone actually carries at a small podunk store, so, i doubt that he will be able to fix anything.
A hardware store is a good place, but not to hole up in.to raid-yes.
And I wont even bother with him thinking that his mobile phone will work because theres a tower that goes 150, a thousand feet up in the air.

So ACE Hardware is apparently unaware of how they could have used this to give their company major cool points in social media and helped spread their brand among the younger demographic and instead will do the exact opposite?

Good job, guys. If you're even luckier, some other hardware store will pick up on this and go with a clever trendy "We're the store you go to to prepare for the zombie invasion" ad campaign to make ACE look even sillier.

Jebus, these guys at ACE Corporate are not only humorless, they're morons.  They should embrace the free publicity...it will pay off for them much better than the backlash that being whiny biatches will.

Yes, it is...because the backlash that ACE will feel from this is a result of the free market.

Bold and daring is when you risk your reputation to prove that an unpopular convict is innocent of their crime in the name of justice. Bold and daring is putting your life on the line to reveal atrocities performed at the hands of a highly-guarded dictator. Bold and daring is when you disregard your own safety to expose the transgressions of a beloved institution. Bold and daring is not half-assing a short documentary homework assignment about your idiot buddy and his incredibly stupid and poorly thought out hypothetical plan to survive a zombie apocalypse that he knows will never happen while getting a company's legal team on your ass because you have no idea what you're doing and didn't stop to think that you need permission to use their trademarks and facilities when you publicly distribute your video (in other words, Filmmaking 101: Either get permission or cover it up).
