The reasoning given in TFA is pretty much correct. I've been in the egg business for 32 years and have only seen this twice. Believe me, I've seen my share of eggs in 32 years.

I think it was the chickadee part that sold it, like the professor that always liked the plagerized report with the whale,

2013-01-24 06:20:59 PM
Maybe the chicken just swallowed the egg whole, and when it came back out it had another egg around it?

Ewww. How long has the little egg been sitting inside the chicken at a warm temperature, and how much bacteria has grown in there?

Where do you think eggs come from? And here eggs are not kept refrigerated in stores. They last ages.

If you want to find out which chicken in your hen house laid that egg, just look for the one that hasn't sat down in a week. Ouch!

The CDC would like a word with you: "Like other foods, keep eggs refrigerated at ≤40° F (≤4° C) at all times. Buy eggs only from stores or other suppliers that keep them refrigerated"

I'm pretty sure that "sits inside a chicken so goddam long another egg forms around it" is not a proper refrigeration method.

Americans are just paranoid about keeping everything in the fridge. No store in the UK, even Walmart owned ASDA, puts eggs in chillers. They are just in boxes on shelves. Lots of people don't keep them in the fridge when they get them home. My mother never puts butter in the fridge, it's left out so its soft and easy to spread. Mayonnaise, jam etc is never put in the fridge.

And yet strangely my mother, and the rest of the UK, is still alive.

Yeah, their is nothing wrong with being retired.

Your memory is faulty. Being from the UK, it's probably just the onset of Mad Cow disease -- a disease which only strikes countries who are lazy about food safety.

Those of us whose memories still work will recall when the UK had a major egg salmonella scare such that it was a big deal when the Queen made a public show of support by eating eggs.

The US seems to have far more cases than the UK.. Five times the population, ten timed the deaths. Salmonella is also not killed by refrigeration, or even freezing.

I've noticed the same thing. I've also noticed that butter in the USA is always rock hard because it's so cold. You try to spread butter on a piece of bread in the USA and you'll most likely end up tearing the bread in half. It's an annoying compulsion.

You know they don't fridge eggs in parts of Europe? And that an uncracked egg is considered almost sterile? And that human females are born with all the eggs they will ever have for the rest of their lives? That means that YOU sat inside your mother at 98.6 since she was born, yo.

A little late to the show, but someone commented about the age of the egg that was inside the other egg. It would have been a little over two days old. A hen makes a new egg in a little over 24 hours. THe small egg was formed on day one and was somehow forced back up the oviduct while the other egg on day two was being made. THey came together before the membrain and shell was formed around the big egg.
