Reminds me of the time I took LSD, went to Gen-Con, and got stuck in a group talking about how awesome Magic the Gathering was because my feet had melted to the floor. But the hot girls dressed as RPG characters was the best part besides getting a picture with Chewbacca who i thought was Bigfoot at the time. Good times!

Also, there's been shiattons of informal studies over the years, although it's been only very recently since we started going scientific.

I wouldn't be surprised if your Brony studies borrowed heavily from the furry fandom's studies. There's a huge overlap, after all.

Interesting article.

Furries are pretty cool people, and most of them take the "live and let live" philosophy. Yeah, they're weird as all sh** sometimes, but I'm a Pony fan who likes Star Trek and Legos. I've got no room to stand on the nerd judgement.

The only thing that impacts the furry community disproportionately more than other nerdy subsets is the non-functional members' publicity. Going to a Star Trek con, there isn't a lot of attention paid to the two guys who write Kirk/Picard fanfics vs going to a fur con and seeing the two or three social retards acting like it.

Could have fooled me. I don't know why the nitwit writer kept going on about fursuits, few furries own them.

When asked how important the sex aspect was to their participation or enjoyment of the fandom, most furries said that it wasn't very important.

It's pretty important though, you just need to look on furaffinity.net or e621.net to see loads of fine porn.

If you take WAY to many or you have no idea how to handle a trip it can get pretty weird. Especially if you are taking them solo or you aren't familiar with the specific shrooms you are taking

I have had a few grams that will melt your mind, had the same and was just meh. Once ate a 1/4oz and it was more psychedelic than almost every LSD trip i have ever had.

Agreed, most furries will lie to the media about that aspect. Lets face it, furries get a bad rap already, no need to reinforce the stereotype. Most non-furry people don't seperate the porn aspect and the sex-in-fursuit aspect. The sex-in-fursuit I would say is "not all that important", and infact alot of furries don't really care about doing it. But you can't say that to reporters as they'll just nit-pick and quote mine.

I went to high school with a furry kid. He was the weirdest dude ever. He would always wear a wolf tail and a dog collar and dress only in shorts and a t-shirt, even when it was 20 degrees out. I once asked him why he did it and his response was "Like, I totally connect with wolves spiritually and stuff so like, I'm gonna move to like, Alaska so I can live with the wolves because like, they can teach us so much spiritually". Having actually lived in Alaska, my response was along the lines of " Well, I look forward to the news footage of the rescue team airlifting your frost and wolf bitten ass out of a tree because you charged into the woods without proper equipment and tried to pet a wild animal".

Seriously, hallucinogenics can be wonderful things, in the same way that any drug can be a wonderful thing. Or power tools. Or high voltage lines.

Or they can kill you.

I honestly can't fathom how somebody can say, "OK, I'm going to take shrooms, but I have no idea who much, so I'll guess, and then I'm going to a public place."

Except that I can fathom it, because I saw it happen more than once when I was young, and I have a feeling that at least one of those people has carried around psychological baggage ever since. Which isn't funny.

Jeez, man, I just repeated the same joke as was in the article.

And yes, conventioneers of most types tend to be upholstered fairly heavily, as it goes with the Dr. Pepper and Cheetos/Firefly marathon/crusty couch lifestyle choices.

The "bi" probably arises from an any port in a storm approach to sexuality.

Magorn: Ennuipoet: I like to think of myself as open minded and accepting of all cultures, interests and nerddoms...but I must admit Furries freak me out.  I am not saying they are wrong, just that they remind me of hyper-sexual fur clad clowns...and they frighten me.

/furry clowns coming to get me, furry clowns coming to get me...

Right there with you.  I once saved a furry's life at a Burning Man-style event (he'd wandered past the safety periment of a very large bonifire and was unaware that his polyester fur suit had started smoldering and was about to ignite because it insultated him from the heat somewhat)- sometimes I wonder if I did the right thing

A second hand story about a wild time with drugs that happened years ago, maybe, followed by a shiatty story about a furry convention. Your blog sucks.

Though I'd like clarification on this quote:

He puts his shirt back on, and tells me that the fursuit is an amalgamation of all of his dogs: the nose belongs to one dog, the ears to another, and so on.

Because the way that's written sounds strangely like his fursuit is made from his dogs.

If the author wanted to understand why they're the butt end of jokes, the article really could've ended at the description of a 'fursona'.

We're all anthropomorphic animals! We even wear costumes called "clothing" to hide our real selves! Made out of actual animal hair sometimes! Often in bright, garish colors and impractical styles! We're even trained to plaster fake, dead, lifeless smiles on our faces to fit in! We even have different "personas" we use in different social settings!

\He who fights monsters, etc. etc.

Snickony: I don't understand the whole furry thing. How is that sexy?

I also don't know if I want to know.

The thrill of truly anonymous sex and absolution from "human" sexual hangups, maybe?

An association that humans are cruel and rotten but cartoon animals are colorful and have attractive personalities?

A misfiring instinct to attract a mate by showing off creativity and courage to stand out against the social norm?

On the other hand, why do some people get off on getting tied up and made to feel pain? Who the fark knows?

The trouble with fetishes is that they expose how strange and fragile our notions of sex really are.

/now shut up and gag me

Yeah, the article's not really all that surprising. Consider the humanity that's dredged up for pretty much any convention, and you get an idea of what would show up at a furry con.

I got into the community real early during college after not coping well and having Paxil prescribed to me for a year. Pretty much everyone gets involved due to like-minded acceptance, but how involved you get can vary greatly. That's what even to this day I find so very odd about the fandom... it can be an interest, a hobby, a fetish, a lifestyle, a career, or an unhealthy obsession... and you'd be right on all accounts.

My interest peaked in the mid-90's, when I went to the only convention I went to. Back then the fandom didn't have their own conventions, so I went to Duckon at Chicago... a mostly sci-fi con with a furry element. There's only three reasons you'd go to one of these: to meet folks, to buy/sell merch, or to hook up. I'm pretty open-minded, but I heard one conversation at 3:30 in the morning about how someone broke their fur-lined handcuffs earlier that night.

It was about that time I realized I had no business being there, that I simply didn't have the interest level as everyone else around me. It's why most people that could be classified as a furry end up as lurkers. Most want acceptance and end up getting it, but the fandom as a whole is defined by the small percentage that want attention, and cons are where they cut loose. You don't really get a good cross section of the community at a con, but rather a very bright spotlight on the fringe.
