As a huge fan of the Darksiders franchise I'm very glad to hear this. The first one was fantastic, like God of War and Legend of Zelda somehow magically farked and the offspring was Darksiders. Their take on the 4 horsemen is very interesting. I also liked how the gameplay changed between 1 & 2, with War being more of a heavy bruiser, while Death was all about speed and finesse.

Was worried when I read yesterday that Vigil was the only asset not auctioned off. Cool that Platinum is stepping in to help.

I really hope the Company of Heroes and W40k games find a good home. I loved both of those a lot.

Sega bought relic. and as long as relic is left intact, I imagine gamesworkshop will keep the 40k license with them.

I can see platinum owning vigil and darksiders as being an awesome thing. and a backdoor way for nintendo to own vigil, it's like a pre-made western zelda studio.

I think it will be, for dawn of war anyway. I mean, it's basically going to mean a Total War:Imperium of Man game.

...

...

which is going to be awesome.

I would like to see them keep doing something with the "Space Marine" game. I kinda want an awesome pre-heresy story driven RPG/3rd person shooter using that engine.

I hope they pick this up. I bought Darksiders on a whim and enjoyed the hell out of it and Darksiders 2. Mainly enjoyed the Zelda like gameplay. Did seem as I was playing that I would recognize gameplay elements from other games.

2013-01-24 03:43:43 PM
That reminds me, I really need to finish playing Darksiders 2.

I really hope that Platinum buys not just the Darksiders IP, but Vigil as well. While I'm sure it would be insanely cool to see what Platinum does with that license, they are already making character-action games out the wazoo like Bayonetta 2 and MGS Rising.

Platinum needs to buy Vigil and then allow them the freedom and resources to make Darksiders 3 a crazy game.

That was far from the only property to go unauctioned by the way. I have yet.to hear anything about the Titan Quest license for example. I wish Crate could get that one back...

I remember past E3s where THQ was in a side hall off the main entrance, and always thought the games they were putting out were a joke (EX, I remember some Bugs Bunny game).

Then at some point, they changed things up and started to put out some quality stuff (Like Saints Row, buggy and derivative as it was, the first one was fun as hell, and the second one actually innovated (EX, online co-op through the entire game)).

Then the screwed things up again, too much DLC and other stuff.

They just never seemed to have consistency in their releases. Sad because there was/is a lot of potential wrapped up there. I chalk this entire thing up to management screwups :(

Why does Sega + Relic make me think of a 40k game done with the tactical (but not graphical style) engine of Valkyria Chronicles?

That could actually be damned impressive for Kill Team style game...

Yes, it had a lot to do with poor management. They put a hell of a lot of stock into Homefront, hoping to chip away at the CoD/Battlefield base, but were very unsuccessful. Putting so much stock into advertising Homefront meant other games got very little attention, like Darksiders II which was critically acclaimed, but sales were low. They also lost the UFC license to EA and the delays with other games (like the South Park one) put them in a lot of trouble.

Cause and effect They sold the UFC license to EA because they were hard up for cash at that time.

If you put a Imperial guard skin on it, and gave everyone a lasgun, and switched the tank for a Leman Russ, VC would play pretty much like my ideal gaurdsmen game.

Always wanted one that focuses on small squads and strategic combat, but most 40k games seem to revolve around the Astares instead. It's really a shame.

fark YES. We have to make this happen.

Problem with THQ was they have so many games but a vast majority of them were geared towards kids. That might sell well, but 15 different SpongeBob games aren't going to sell to many people over the age of 10.

Kiddie shovelware games are actually easy money. What killed them were the (expensive) AAA titles that didn't sell and sinking so much into things like uDraw.

I loved a lot of the IPs and studios, so I hope those guys find other work. I also hope that the management involved, especially Brian Farrell, never work in the industry again.

Read that Zenimax (which owns Bethesda, makers of the Elder Scrolls/Fallout) came in second to Sega for the Relic bid (40K franchise, Company of Heroes).

For those ever wishing for an Imperium of Man-set RPG, a Fallout Tactics sequel or an Elder Scrolls RTS ... it's what could have been. Sigh.

Oh well, at least it wasn't EA/Activision.

Also, I would've loved to have seen Crytek or Valve pick up Saints Row. Take Two would've sabotaged Saints Row 4, suffocating it in a blanket for GTA's glory.

Bad license management, bad investments (Homefront and UDraw), poor budgeting, terrible studio management, etc. They had a lot of problems, cheaply made kids games wasn't one of them.

2013-01-24 04:18:04 PM
uDraw killed THQ.

I do hope the Virgil team gets to keep on going.
Darksiders 1 and 2 have been a fun ride. They fill that over the top dramatics genre that Legacy of Kain used to fill.

All the more reason for a modern IG based game. Winter assault expac for DoW 1 was fantastic, if nothing like tabletop. But the characterization of the gaurd and their actions was pretty spot on.

I ordered the uDraw tablet and a uDraw tablet compatible game from Best Buy last week and got it yesterday. Damn thing doesn't do jack squat. I used fresh batteries, pressed the sync buttons, re-positioned the system and controller...nothing. I'm taking this piece of shiat back to BB tomorrow for a refund. With crap tech like that, it's no wonder THQ bought the farm. Hopefully the Darksiders and Saints Row IPs will end up in more competent hands.

The greatest wrasslin video game of all time.

I dunno, I have very fond memories of this Genesis/SNES classic:

Of course, this has nothing to do with THQ. It was made my LJN, later owned by Acclaim. Since Acclaim disappeared, vaguely curious who owns the rights to it now.

Hunter4242: Why does Sega + Relic make me think of a 40k game done with the tactical (but not graphical style) engine of Valkyria Chronicles?

That could actually be damned impressive for Kill Team style game...

Every time I hear the name Valkyria Chronicles I want to punch Sega in their collective babymaker. Dear god did they fark up that IP... it's why I have little faith they can make anything decent.

The only saving grace for Relic is that they stay as a separate studio. Sega's only good games recently are the Total War games, and they're done by The Creative Assembly that Sega also owns. So Sega can make good games as long as other developers do it for them, apparently.

SuperT: scottydoesntknow: cannotsuggestaname: I really hope the Company of Heroes and W40k games find a good home. I loved both of those a lot.

They found Sega. Whether that's good or not remains to be seen

Assuming that the 40k license stays with Relic and goes to Sega, nothing is confirmed on that front, I'm not sure why everyone assumes we're going to get a Total War style 40k game out of it. Yes, Sega publishes Total War now and has Creative Assembly under their wings, but CA is not Relic and Relic is not CA. Work had already started at Relic on Dawn of War 3 before all of this craziness with THQ went down, and CA is already working on a Warhammer Fantasy Battle title. I feel like the fact that Sega already has the WFB license is a good indicator that they'll go ahead and scoop up 40k as well, so here's hoping. Dawn of War 2 got me into the 40k table top game with a Blood Ravens army, so I'm really hoping that we keep getting more of the series in the future.

I'd also like to see a follow up to Space Marine. It was a solid first effort, and I enjoyed the hell out of it, but there's certainly room for improvement in the future.

If nothing else though this whole business with THQ going down the tubes almost certainly puts the final nail in the coffin of DarkMillennium online, with Vigil and Relic no longer under the same roof and Vigil, being the lead team on it, almost certainly being separated from the 40k license now. Maybe it's for the best in the end though.

The Bestest: Celerian: Problem with THQ was they have so many games but a vast majority of them were geared towards kids. That might sell well, but 15 different SpongeBob games aren't going to sell to many people over the age of 10.

Kiddie shovelware games are actually easy money. What killed them were the (expensive) AAA titles that didn't sell and sinking so much into things like uDraw.

I did some work for a company that made a ton of Disney shovelware. Those guys did a lot of blow.

As much as I enjoyed the first Darksiders (seriously excellent game), the second one just hasn't done it for me. I bought the game on pre-order and started playing it right when it came out. And I still haven't got around to finishing it. I don't know what it is exactly, but for some reason, Death just isn't as compelling a character to me as War, and the story really isn't grabbing me. :-/

Oh well, maybe I'll get around to finishing the game someday.

Does anyone know how this sale of assets will affect the "Metro: Last Night" release, if at all? I have it on pre-order through Amazon, and I'd like to know that it'll still be released when they say.

2013-01-24 08:37:45 PM
Also, I'm so glad that Ubisoft weren't the ones to get the Metro franchise. I would have cancelled my pre-order immediately if they had, as I refuse to give any money to those jack-offs.

It's currently unclear who owns the rights to Homeworld, it's possible they're still in the hands of THQ who bought them with Relic originally. It's also still up in the air who has the 40k license, but Sega owning the WFB license makes for a strong case for Sega getting it too.

I thought Crytek get Homeworld?

I know that Sega got Relic, but wonder if that includes the WH40K license?
If not, I would hate to see who will end up with it and how they will miss the point. Relic has been making the games long enough that they understand the internal logic of that universe.

Space Marines are like Gears from Gears of War, but with brains. Then add in the Guard and the concept of the Imperial religion and the Commissars and the Inquisition and things can get muddled in terms of creating a cohesive story very quickly.

Then you add in the enemies who aren't as 1 dimensional as the Locusts, (Orcs are pretty easy to work with, But Tau?, Eldar?)
Even the Chaos Factions aren't as uniform in desires (see the Dark Apostle books for some insight in the factions that exist in just the Word Bearers for example)

A less talented team could go very wrong trying to create something there.

The Titan's Quest IP is fairly generic, I'm not sure anyone would bother with continuing with it, including Crate. I assume someone will pick it up for the residuals, though.

Killed many an hour on this game.

I'm gonna have to reinstall that. Detonating two charges to collapse two smokestacks onto a factory, destroying the whole shebang, from a quarter mile away... you just can't get that in too many other games.

I'd kill for a RF:G/Gmod type thing. Just some sort of playground.

Yeah. As linear as it was you did have a lot of options. I used to shoot down stalagmites with the rocket launcher and use them for cover. Another favorite was lining up three or four enemies with the railgun scope then THWIP.

I played Darksiders and found it to be a goofy mess. The story line was dumb, the "YOU MUST DEFEAT 3 CHALLENGE ROOMS TO GO ON!" shadow worlds were annoying, the environments were plain and completely uninteresting.

For me, the game felt like it had no direction, like they never knew during development what it was going to be. The kicker was the controls. 3rd person beat-em-ups have to have solid controls. They felt awful and the button mapping was worse.

Of course I seem to be in a minority here, but after playing Darksiders, I had no desire to play the sequel.

I have Darksiders sitting on Steam as a result of the Humble Indie Bundle THQ put out about two months ago. Looking forward to playing it when I buy a desktop that can actually run it.

I'm just glad that Volition is still alive. I really love my sandboxes, and Saints Row is the most excessive, goofy, straight up fun series in that genre. I'm playing through RF: Guerilla, and that's a fun game too.

SEGA has done well with the Total War series. I enjoy the RTS genre, though I'm turned off by Warhammer as a property, but they seem to buy these dev houses and let them be, at least when it comes to the PC market. Plus they figured out how to make Sonic the best platformer around again, so I think we're okay with this weirdly-competent SEGA buying Relic.

I'm wondering why Vinnie Mac doesn't just create WWE games, bring Yukes over to design the WWE series, and then publish those games themselves. Seems like they'd get a bigger cut than selling the licensing to Take-Two. Maybe I'm wrong about that.

I thought the game sold around 2 mil.
The follow ups on the story mention 2 things.

1. Virgil is the farthest away from releasing another game. DS2 was their 2012 release.
2. Their next title was going to be a new IP. It's an added risk that any publisher would have to take on and spend marketing dollars.

Basically, the ROI on the acquisition was not potentially high enough.

I was just assuming that Vince would stick with Yuke's and play it safe rather than be creative about what studio he got to develop his games.

I would love to see synSophia/AKI make another WWF/E game. I still think Def Jam: Fight For New York is the most perfect game they have ever done, even if it's only a wrestling game hybrid. Still, can you imagine a No Mercy sequel on that engine? My word. And that engine is almost a decade old!
