Let's see, this means dook will drop to number 2 and Miami will climb to number 24

And then I can look forward to dook vs. West Texas St. on TV instead of Michigan-Wisconsin or Oregon-UCLA or Louisville-Notre Dame.

Ah, Dick Vitale, a harbinger of spring. Like the robins, only more annoying, louder, and dumber.

I really can't stand the phrase "teaching moment."

Burn ESPN down.

Hasn't Miami beaten Duke several times over the past few years? Maybe not ever when they were ranked #1, but it's not like this is K-State beating KU in Manhattan here.

2013-01-24 03:42:35 PM
People who rail against Dick Vitale are justified, but they forget that he's white noise compared to the sheer idiocy that was Billy Packer.

And furthermore, Vitale has not produced an offspring that has polluted the airwaves with a second generation of sheer idiocy.

Duke has had trouble in the state of Florida in recent years, which is odd because it's like a third home state for them.

Silly kitty-boy, don't you know if KU could close every other university in the state, they'd do it?

Wasn't Billy Packer the guy who used to say at the beginning of games that teams were "going.....mantoman" super quick?  Trying to remember who was calling our games in the '97 tournament....

That's Bill Raftery.

I don't get the Packer hate.  I liked him ever since he used to do ACC games back with Jim Thacker.  Maybe it's just a nostalgia thing.  Plus he went to my sister's alma mater.  And he's the only guy I know who called Putt Putt tournaments on TV.

I've always consider that one mild ribbing at best.

KU Breakdown:
1/3 Foreigners and Chicago-area 'safety-schoolers'. Don't really care.
1/3 Johnson County. Barely remember K-State is out there
1/3 (like me) from Topeka and points west. Virtually all have a surprisingly soft spot for the guys in purple.

I work in a major D1 basketball arena. Dick Vitale is the biggest prima-donna that comes through the building. Bobby Knight, Verne Lundquist, Brent Musberger, and just about everyone else will sit in the media room, or talk to folks on the floor before the game starts. Vitale is the only one who requires a private green room. They send us emails asking us not to "bother" him.

Okay, then I think (given that I remember what Raftery looks like) that it was Packer calling our games that year.  If my VCR worked I'd totally be popping in the tape of us beating the snot out of dook in the '97 tournament right now to check....

In the last few years of his run, Billy Packer was as bad during March as Tim McCarver is in October.

Dook's Thursday practice was reported by Dan Patrick to have started at 1:30 am and ended at 4:45.

Then it was pointed out that this would be an NCAA violation, if true.

Then it was reported that Dan meant this as a joke (which is not the way it sounded when he first reported it).

Then it was reported that if it was just the players, it was not a violation.

Here's the story.

Expect this to be looked into as deeply as the Corey Maggette and Lance Thomas affairs.

I'd watch the hell out of a Jimmy V - Dickie V sitcom. Call it "V and V".

Or, "Duke Sucks".

I moved out of Charlotte several years ago, but back then Mark Packer on WFNZ was the best thing on local sports talk. His show was great. I know he tried to branch out into all ACC coverage but I left before that really got off the ground so I don't know how it turned out. Plus he was a good guy in local civics, doing fundraisers and speaking to different groups. I arranged for him to speak at one of our functions and in the four years I was involved he was the only one who stuck around for our full meeting, even helping us present a few things impromptu.

I can't speak to him as a person. If he does a lot of things in the community, more power to him. I was just speaking to his on-air time. And if you're referring to Prime Time With the Packman, we got that on WGHB 1250 in Greenville ("Pirate Radio - Arr!"). Dear god that man had the biggest cavalcade of nitwits and rednecks this side of John Boy and Billy. And his callers reached almost Finebaumian levels of an argument in favor of eugenics.

2013-01-24 08:44:28 PM
Early on it was just him and his guest hosts. Letting the 2nd string talent from the control room pipe in (the extra idiots and rednecks) I'll grant was worthless. I don't remember him being in Greenville, NC. The only Greenville I remember him broadcasting to was the South Carolina variety....a vertiable collection of rednecks themselves. I did like his show, but I can see how he could be considered a pompous assbag, especially if he let his success get in his head.

Plus Charlotte sports radio circa early 2000 was a barren wasteland. We had one dedicated channel and we LIKED it. Now get off my lawn. :-)

Give Miami credit for this win. Defense led to plenty of fast-break points. Duke had a horrible night shooting, with Seth Curry, Quinn Cook and Tyler Thornton really having a tough time.

1 He was a complete ACC slappy even when he was a National broadcaster for years and years.

2. As someone else said...smug bastard.

He only sort of even credits Miami with the win. It's most Duke not playing well. They didn't shoot it well, if they shot well, it would have been closer. What a cocksucker.
