One time, when I was about 13, a friend of mine set himself on fire while several other kids (myself included) stood there and laughed.

We were hanging out in the kid's driveway when we noticed a whole shiatton of ants walking around in the cracks between cement slabs. So, this kid (Ed was his name) got some gasoline from the garage, and poured it all over the ants, telling us it was gonna be awesome to see them all on fire, scattering.

Sure enough, as soon as Ed tosses a lit match to the ground, his leg erupts into flames.  Kid ran around screaming while the rest of us shouted "Stop, drop, and roll!"

Ed ended up spending a week or so in the hospital, but was ultimately OK (bad burns on his legs, but otherwise, no scars). The cops came and gave the rest of us kids a good talking to, but couldn't stop us from finding the whole thing to be rather amusing. I think Ed is still mad about it.

UberDave: Pffft!  Back in my day, we used to set ourselves on fire.

Well, these kids did the same. The problem is that when we were kids, we'd light our selves on fire, have a laugh then go for beer. These kids are using self immolation as a gateway to bigger problems. Now their lighting their friends on fire. Next they'll be flicking their Bic behind the girl in English class. You know, the one that uses way to much hair spray. Then, wow, her hair catches on fire and you get pulled down to the principals office. Just imagine these kids in 10 years. Strung out on string cheese, looking for some Zippo fluid to dip their fingers in, having to suffer with cheap butane and those impossible to get into bottles. Then when out drinking some girl will ask for a light and won't return the lighter and these punks will be stealing lighters from bowling alleys so they can light the hobo's under the bridge up.

It's a sad story, and I'm sure it will only get worse.
