what if north korea really is an amazing land of happiness and plenty and we are the ones being lied to by a vast propaganda machine?

Why not take the tour of fabulous Pyongyang and see for yourself! What wonders await you there, from their giant hotels to their aging fleet of old soviet Migs, it truly is a land of contrast.

well sure, that's how the capitalist imperialists paint pyongyang to us outsiders, but i have no way of knowing that is true. if it were really that bad, why haven't more people left north korea?  i'll tell you why: to paraphrase zionist jerry seinfeld, who leaves a country packed with unicorns to come to a non-unicorn country?

At least in translation, I know Vogons who could do better. Maybe it loses something in translation, though?

North Korea is one of those countries that no one has to make up propaganda about. Observable reality does the job quite nicely.

A banner reading "Accomplish task suggested by Workers Party Central Committee and Central Army Committee" appears at a rally commemorating the 65th anniversary of North Korean Workers Party in Pyongyang on Feb. 13, 2010.

So poetic. Rhyming "Committee" with "Committee"? Genius! And such beautiful imagery too...

Indeed; propaganda does work both ways.

And, as one of the last true communist countries in the world; they could be maligned. Heaven forbid we actually piss off a country that could actually do something about it, such as china.

/ either way; Norks do make an easy target for ridicule and we'd believe absolutely ANYTHING about them.

What should always make it lose it's luster is the last part... "disagree and you and your family will die in a work camp."

That there is a pretty good BS detector.

That what I always wonder from time to time. I think that would be a great theme for a story to explore, because we know North Korea's perception of world affairs is different to ours but what if the shoe were on the other foot.

It could make for an interesting series of alternate-history novels. You'd probably have to file them under science-fiction, though.
